Practice cantering poles and finding your distances that way. Poles are much less work for your pony and there is much more room for error. Practice finding a working rythm on the flat and then try to carry that onto cantering poles in the place of where jumps would be. Even just start with a single pole. Canter back and forth until you get a feeling for the best place to take off from. Then adjust your strides accordingly.

Yea dont just throw poles on the ground. Figure out how many strides you want to do between each pole. A basic hunter line is normally about 6-8 strides. The average stride is 12ft long and a landing/take off is 6ft each. So a two stride line woul be 12ft X 2strides + 6ft landing + 6ft take off for a total of 36ft. However if you have a pony, you might want to subtract feet depending on his size. However with poles in the place of fences (cont.)

you might want to only make the take offs and landings maybe 3ft each because it doesnt take much to get over a pole. I know thats all kind of confusing but theres always multiples that change things so if you're confused let me know.
