@lovetheanimals8 I don't know where you will find an accurate translation, I learned an English version as a child, and knew it by the name "Cossack Lullaby" . I found this version when trying to find the piece again. It is the same tune. The words I learned were "Sleep my baby , softly slumber, lula lulaby. Round your head the shades are falling lula lulaby. Far away your valiant father fights, and breaks my heart . Sleep my baby, softly slumber, someday we too will part.
As the crescent moon shines into the cradle, she sings of her hopes that her son will grow up to be a strong warrior, of mighty height; that he will remember her and every night before he goes into battle pray before a little ikon with which she will bless him before he rides forth on his journey. "Bayushki-bayu" is the traditional "lully-lully" refrain. The rest of the lyrics are about the river Terek, famous for its raucous rapids. Read up about Lermontov on Wikipedia, well worth it!
The lullaby's words are from a poem by Lermontov, a great Russian poet of Scots ancestry, who served in the military in the Caucasus and was killed in a duel at the age of 28. He was also an extremely talented painter. You can see his paintings on Oleg Pogudin's version of this song. The lullaby is of course an original poem, but it is woven around local folk themes of the people in the region, in which a mother sings to her baby son of her father's valor & skill in able to defend against harm.
Dear bndlazar, can you please write the meaning of the Lullaby? It sounds really very sad. What must going on in the heart of the mother who sings this to her sleeping baby. Thanks,Jong

My mom use to sing this song to me as a child. It is a very dark llulaby. As I grew up I finally understood what it meant. Thankyou, b
