This was so neat! Notice at the beginning, how she's mouthing his lines, particularly, "Your voice"... Some people memorize lines this way, by also memorizing the preceding character's, as a linear string. She's so cute, too; there's a spontaneity here that shows humans of such lost eras were still entirely human-- the stiff and stolid of posed photos now becoming animated and heard, less ghosts.
@sweiland75 Well... yes I am too young to recall first hand the days when a grown woman would blush and giggle at being asked if she has 'slept with men.' You'd have to try a lot harder than that to make most of the women I've known blush. ;)
I say women should form a national committee to bring back all of the soft and sexy 'every day' clothing from the 1910's - 1930's. Women were so beautiful and tantalizing back then. Actually, I'm sure many of the desirable fashions of those times got slighted due to the factory dress codes for women. Maybe women decided they didn't want to be as soft and sexy? That's just really sad because I love women! So anyway, I love Hitchcock movies and any early film.Get a load of that Kay Francis!
Also... I'm not sure I understand what Hitchcock was trying to do here. How did he go from "a squad van is on it's way" to "Have you been a bad woman or something?" to "but you've slept with men?" Anyone care to explain this banter to me?
He's just messing with her and trying to get her to laugh. It was probably much more taboo at that time for a man to ask a woman if she's had sex. I don't think that he was really asking her if she had; he's just trying to ask her embarrassing questions to crack her up for the sound test.
:-) Nice clip. The historic value is priceless. Hitch may have been an odd and somewhat creepy individual, but there's no denying his charm and sense of humor and it comes out here.
Alfred Hitchcock could be really 'naughty' and even a little sadistic sometimes !!!!
Even so, a very clever man indeed. He gave Cinema audiences what they wanted.
It was 'Gainsborough-Pictures' owner Michael Balcon that signed up Hitchcock to produce some of the great Murder, Mistery & Suspense Films of the '30's.
When 'Gainsbourgh' & 'Gaumont-British' murged, Hitchcock produced films for Gaumont like:- 'The 39 Steps', 'The Man who knew too much'.... He then went to America to continue
I'm sure that a bigger budget and better facilities, would have kept Alfred Hitchcock, here in Britain.
Gainsborough's Islington & 'Gaumont-British' Shepherds Bush studios were too small and underfunded to produce the greatest and most memorable Hitchcock films, that he did in America.
She's adorable!

Unintelligible my butt. I understood her perfectly. They should have just changed the characters background in the movie (which was great).
