@ kolkrabe, wtf are you even talking about? Analysis simply means studying ANYTHING by breaking it down into its component parts. It has nothing to do with mental illness. Why would you recommend a video that is a complete non-sequitur?
albbester--its published by boosey & hawkes but not commercially available yet. or rather, it costs nearly $300 to buy. your best bet is to get a music library to purchase it or rent it for you.
everyone in my music class really hated this music. probably just beacuse we're used to hearing classical and romantic periods but i loved something about this piece..
lol. they just make us listen to different types of music for us to decide which orchestral period its in, the dates etc. composers, what the characteristics etc. something im halfway good at so i quite enjoy it. and i get to listen to music. so im happy all round =)
I heard this song over the radio then, then I bought it, I look into the song I knew their had to be a meaning to the lyrics my "my name is Daniel Pearl" after I found out what they meant, I listen to the song again, and i went into a daze with images and couldn't help but to cry.
DANIEL VARIATIONS is out on CD! I just picked it up a couple days ago. It's beautiful. The performance in this video is a bit faster, and Jordan Hall is much more resonant, though. The CD also includes "Variations for Vibes, Piano, and Strings." Both wonderful pieces, but once again "Daniel" really stands out.

hi! i live in Israel and unfortunately i couldn't get my hands on the Daniel variations.... i think that if i reach heaven i would probably hear Reich's music... brilliant performance! it's a shame it is a little cut at the end... thx though :-)
Well, the CD will come out soon! The original clip I had is 16 minutes, but of course this YouTube only allows a certain amount, and this was the best I could compress. Thanks! Lyla Tov!
hey guys, thanks for posting! me and rob from our band return of simple actually got to sit NEXT to steve, looking at HIS score of this during it's dress rehearsal at carnegie hall last october! definitely one of the cooler stories of my life. we love to talk to other reich lovers, so check out our band here and give us a message, we've got lots of stories about steve!
Thanke you! It's one of his best pieces. I came from Prague to join the Barbican festival. This was on the last concert - since then, I can't stop thinking aboat this piece.
If you have the chance, you should really e-mail Steve Reich and tell him that. It's definitely one of my favorite pieces of his now that I was a bit of a rehearsal pianist for these singers, and got to see the score and feel it... it's an incredible piece!
Well, I'm not sure that he would be interested in my opinions, he is too busy, I think.
There's something very special aboat the way he sets those texts. It is somewhat oposit to Tehilim: In Daniel Variations, instruments are playing rich fast lines whereas the lines for voices developes slower. I don't usually like political art but Reich is far from beig just political. His choise of texts is incredible inventive itself!
You're so right. I think the downfall of most "political" pieces is that they focus too much on the agenda, forgetting the extreme personal, human affects behind the event. Reich, especially in this piece and in Three Tales - Bikini, reminds us that first and foremost, something non-human happened. Humanity was ignored. He brings the human element back. That's what I love. The text in this piece is SO incredibly human, and his music just makes that even more clear.
Thanks for posting! It's shame that sound quality of this recording is not well balnced. It seems, that the performers are very good. I heard the premier of this piece in London. It's a great one. I can't wait the recording. Anybodey knows when Nonesuch is going to do it?

Are you playing one of the instruments, @ jamspice11 ?
kolkrabe19 3 years ago
haha no. our teachers are just obsessed with youtube and make us watch lots of different orchestras so we can analyse them etc,
jamspice11 3 years ago
Analyse them, yes, your teacher wants all of you to study psychology. Better not study psychology, what´s the point analysing the various madnesses.

Amazing, how Reich can create sheer beauty while spinning around a "few" notes. It could go on and on and on ...
