Beautiful Butterfly should be sung by an ethereal voice regardless of whether it's a dramatic or lyric soprano. The important thing is that an exquisite voice delivers the exquisite music - which Fleming does better than most others.
This is without a doubt the most stunningly beautiful version of this aria ever sung- however what a tragedy the third and fourth verses are omitted as these give sweet balance to the strength of the rest of the aria. BRAVA BRAVA RENEE
NEVER take a brand new mother of a beautiful boy to see this.... when it came to the part where she sent her son to his father, I swear you could hear me sobbing throughout the theatre.....truly, never ever do this...
Indeed this is a stunning rendition, just superb..., but 2 y.a., i saw her in ROH, she sung La Traviata... and it wasn't realy what i 'd like 2 hear from her, may be she wasn't in a "proper shape"? don't know....
as well i do understand coz we are all people and smtimes we don't feel well ourselves....
@zinchel Wow, that's surprising to hear. She received raves for that performance, didn't she? I've seen the other videos of her in Traviata and they look amazing. Off night perhaps.... :)
Maybe the reason she hasn't sung the total opera is, she can't remember the lines. That's alot of stuff to remember. I heard Callas forgot some of the words once and hummed part of it.
Awesome!!! I definitely can't sing like that. She's one of the best singer. I'm buying her cd next. I have Angela Gheorghiu's cd, Maria Callas, Sumi Jo, & Cecilia Bartolli. I have only heard Renee sing like a few weeks ago. She definitely have an amazing voice!!!
This is too much like an MTV music video or a Sarah Brightman video. A burning fan ? LOL Fleming's voice is gorgeous but it's only LYRIC and Butterfly is a role that calls for a dramatic Puccini soprano voice. Fleming has never been a Puccini singer, a good Butterfly can also sing Tosca and Manon Lescaut. For Butterfly go to Callas, Scotto and Freni instead.
@AmericanEvita The most famous interpreters of this role, and also many other Puccini roles, has indeed been lyric sopranos. You mentioned Freni, who was a lyric for all of her career. Tebaldi is often considered to be the greatest Tosca, and she was also a lyric (she said so herself). The only Puccini role that should be sung by a dramatic soprano only is probably Turandot. Butterfly, Tosca and Manon Lescaut all require a sensitivity that a dramatic soprano rarely has.
@operamagnus Callas sang Butterfly and she was a dramatic soprano (although also lyric) I think you're right but Fleming is not cut out to sing the full Butterfly opera. She is not Callas, or Freni, or Tebaldi. She just can't do it, just like she can't sing all of Norma. Otherwise she'd have done it already rather than just singing one aria from the Butterfly opera
@AmericanEvita I think Callas's sound was dramatic, but her vocal size sounds rather small (reviews from her times also states this). She was, however, one of the best singers of Butterfly. To be quite honest, I don't think Fleming can sing half the stuff she tries pulling off.
@AmericanEvita Yes; but perhaps she might not have wanted to? Today where puritans don't hold sway any longer - it isn't really a question of lyric or dramatic that decides whether a singer wants to do an opera. There is such wide mixing of repertoire nowadays anyway.
It might be of interest to note that Fleming has learnt over FIFTY operas; all to perform live, something that Callas never did. And I say this not to demean Callas in any way - I'm just leaving well alone!
Does anybody have a link to the uncut version? This one lacks the entire middle part "Mi metto là sul ciglio del colle e aspetto, aspetto gran tempo e non mi pesa la lunga atesa. E uscito dalla folla citadina, un uomo un piciol punto si avvia per la colina..."
I've seen a few operas on television before and heard a few on my grandparents records and classical radio but I must say this is THE most intense aria I've ever heard so far. So beautiful, moving. Rennee Fleming is absolutley amazing.
Has Fleming sung the entire role of Butterfly on stage or doe she just sing Un Bel Di ? She doesn't have the voice for Butterfly because she is not a Puccini voice. I love her lyric voice but Puccini is not her repertoire. I don't know why she insists on singing outside her genre - which is Mozart/French opera/lyric operas.t Butterfly is better suited to Callas, Tebaldi, Freni, Scotto, etc.
she`s earthier in comparison to Gheorghiu, who`s much more of a purity, sensible, sensitive, hurt. a diamond just geting up in flames... ready to be destroyed by love.Wasn`t Butterfly more like that? But clearly Rennee is a great voice.
I love Renee, but the best Cio Cio San in my opinion was Renata Tebaldi. Gheorghiu is not a spinto so her voice doesn't go over the whole orchestra. Renee is better than Gheorgiou as she is a more mature sounding lirico, but the absolute best still is and will continue to be Tebaldi.
I think Renée didn't just do it well because it is not a sad aria and she sung it very sadly. It is a hoping aria. Hope is almost a synonimous of joy. This is why this aria is so recognized. Exactly the opposite to Verdi. Verdi is clear. When Alfredo comes back (3rd act, before Parigi o cara), the music is that ff we all know. No, this is geniously subtile!!
But I'm right now checking Tebaldi. Thanks for suggesting.
Any soprano can sing this aria in concert. The role of Cio Cio San, however, is a big, BIG sing. Nellie Melba, on hearing that Puccini had a new opera going, came to visit and wanted to sing it, though he told her it didn't suit her. She found it beyond her, and flung the score across the room! Fleming and Caballe both have the right voices for it. Okay, the character IS fifteen in the opera (!) but the passion, loyalty, and grandeur of spirit transcends that. We are hearing a woman's soul.
Hello, could someone help me, I need to know where in the Czech Republic can I buy tickets for the concert of Renee Fleming on 14 November 2009. Will you help me?
Hey, francobolletto and jhgreenhorn, the next time you have tickets for Butterfly (or any Puccini) with Renee Fleming singing, and you really don't want to listen to her singing a role for which she is vocally unsuited -- please do me a favor. Just give me a call and I will crawl on my knees -- through fire and glass chards -- to relieve you of that unpleasant event. Big Bill in Big D.
I don't understand why people don't think lyric's like Renee, Kiri, etc. don't have the voice for Puccini. My opinion is that this is the PERFECT voice for Puccini. People are so obsessed with dynamic rather than intensity. I don't know about everyone else, but this intensity is way better than the deafening sound that the "powerful" singers have. Renee's voice is incredible. Puccini orchestrated for strings and winds, not brass, why does the soprano need to be screeching at a fortissimo?
@saxamaphoneguy1 Exactly! If you have ever heard Renee live, you will understand how her intensity, and raw emotion resonates throughout the entire Opera house, and everyone in it, much more than the 'louder' singers.
@saxamaphoneguy1 Exactly a musician, vocalist or instrumentalist must always rememer to not go past their best sound. What does it matter if I play fff if it is not my best quality, right? That's what my band director always tells the brass.
@saxamaphoneguy1 I always feel that this is best when it sounds like she is singing it in a piazza at dusk with a haunting echoy sound- this verson has a bit if that
@gustopheles I think the lip treatment is an homage to the geisha even though no whiteface. I listen with my eyes closed to focus on the music and the emotion of the aria. She is planning with her lover for his return as a joyful event, and to cling to that happiness rather than the sadness of his leaving. What we know that they don't is that he returns with his new wife to take Butterfly's son away and then she commits suicide. The utter poignancy of the music is foreshadowing of these events.
Mme. Butterfly, for all her sorrows, is still a young teenager. Fleming's voice is just right, not too dark, with just the right amount of gravitas. (Butterfly still half believes in "one fine day".) Monserrat Caballe did a great version, not too heavy, only the visuals would get in the way.
If you like Puccini, check Paul Pottss studio version of Turandots NESSUN DORMA + 40 other operas by 40 other composers in my play list 20th CENTURY OPERAS ( including the world premiere of ARIA DEL CIRUJANO from Opera Opus Operatorum by Roberto Rius & Pedro Ipuche Riva )

I saw her sing this live, and I can tell you that I wasn't the only one who had tears streaming down my face (without being able to control it at all)! When she hit that powerful finale, everyone lost it.
Her performance is quite good, as far as I can judge.
But how on earth can they have omitted a part of the aria?! The verses "Mi metto là sul ciglio del colle" to "S'avvia per la collina" are not sung, it's ridiculous!
Well this clip is obviously made to conquer a large audience so maybe they thought cutting a part of the song would make it easier for people not to get bored (shame on them!).
and it can be full lyric to dramatic depending on who is putting it on
When it was composed a voice this large probably wouldn't have been very easy to find, they were either early wagnerian or a blossoming voice trained for earlier Verdi roles, Puccini probably heard a much lighter voice singing something like this, as he technically wasnt one for over the top showmanship
Es indescriptible las emociones que producen algunas melodías Clásicas, melodías que te hacen sentir en la relación que hay entre el cuerpo y el alma, emociones que te hacen invocar a seres queridos, melodías que producen olas inmensas en tu interior...
Haha, god, I think you're right. I don't mean to be vulgar or anything -- Fleming's performance is stunning and unparalleled, and this music video is very beautifully made. It's just, maybe the crew could have been a little bit more careful about the costume and/or the filming angle? It's just a tiny thing anyway... if you didn't mention it I wouldn't have noticed. Her voice itself demands all your attention!
Understand the artistry in what she sings and WHAT she sings about before critisizing the video based on your lack of understanding. Renee is immaculate.
I like voice but not setting! She isnt dressed up Japanese and modern background and special effects dont go at all with real feel of music! Of course thats not the singer's fault.... I dont like it cuz it makes it seem like a music video thing.
you know, she of course is amazing. But sometimes I am just not impressed. I loved her as the countess, but I havent seen anything else that I really like by her.
Emotionally very powerful. She is a great singer

It's hard isn't it? And what a song to be showing. but there are other places to go if that's what you are looking for...

I hate to call people an idiot, but I can't help agreeing. The video is terrible, like a high-school project.

Though Renee Fleming sings it greatly, i do think that Renata Tebaldi's l'aspetto is better in timing

KITSCH video. Why not put her on a hill looking out into the horizon? In Character. This look like shampoo video.

Renee Fleming is wonderful! Interesting video...

This is corny! What a bad music video. Hate the breathy, raspy sound.
uniqueattack 2 years ago
Her rendition is very powerful and passionate.
She really deserves to be written in the books about opera

wer kann wen schlagen in dieser arie?
callas, tebaldi, fleming.
es gibt hunderte grosser butterfly-interpretinnen.
fleming ist einfach eine sensationelle sängerin.
wen interessiert es wer vorher oder nachher besser oder schlechter war.
unerem operngott sei gedankt für solch tolle momente

no offence, but I think no one can beat Callas' interpretation of this song.

Og my gosh, I love Renee Fleming and I love this video so much....it is amazing. It gives me the chills, what amazing writing. Sigh.

Understand the artistry in what she sings and WHAT she sings about before critisizing the video based on your lack of understanding. Renee is immaculate.

Her singing is not bad,but filming is weird and out of stile.

theblueangel28 3 years ago
lol oh ok. but that song is beautifull regardless. wouldnt you agree?
futurelovers24 3 years ago
oh yes, divine. its one of the most famous arias in opera. and certainly one of my favorites
theblueangel28 3 years ago
I like voice but not setting! She isnt dressed up Japanese and modern background and special effects dont go at all with real feel of music! Of course thats not the singer's fault.... I dont like it cuz it makes it seem like a music video thing.
