Until 0:15 the Sea Shepherd is not moving, then suddenly the captain increases the speed. Looks like both the Japanese captain and the captain of the Sea Shepherd are to blame.
This ship was not underway when it was hit. The so call propulsion was caused by the actual inpact. Watch the waves at 0:14 to almost 0:15, you will seee that the motion of the striking ship was stopped for a brief moment before the Ady Gil is seen with a wake behind her. It's clear that any momentum that the Ady Gil had, was caused by tthe shonan maru #2 ramming them. Now that the show has aired, it's completely clear that the captain of that ship, shonan maru #2 deserves to be prosecuted.
You all really need to watch the wake of the Ady Gill. It is clear that the Japan harpoon ship was not the cause of this incident. You can clearly see the wake of the Ady Gill doubling in size before the strike. The other part to watch is the wake of the Bob Parker. It remains constant and the same distance away from the harpoon ship, while the Ady Gill actually moves away from that wake. Whaling is wrong, Sea Shepherds are worst.

Was channel surfing and just saw the episode of Whale Wars that features the collision. TV bias or not, the Ady Gil was OUT OF FUEL when they were rammed. Literally. No fuel. Just enough to keep idling. If you see video of it at full speed, its nose is in the air, and it produces a serious wake.
TV in Japan showed the water surface with loads of fuel as the Japanese tried to savaged the Ady Gil.
And, there is an obvious spray of white water from the Ady Gil just before it's hit i.e props moving=fuel.
I saw some of Sea Shepherd's people talk of an engine malfunction before the hit (to explain the white water) and just getting the motor running as they got hit.

Japan is taking any whale that they find. They have a self imposed lmit of fifty humpbacks. There are speculations that as few as a hundred humpbacks are birthed every year. Tragic. And no need for them to be hunted. anything that can be had from them can be produced by other means.

They didn't try to hit them . The whale huggers ran their much more maneuverable boat in front of them. They were looking for trouble and they got it.

je kan de tegenwoordige walvisvangst niet stoppen, door met duur betaalde boten op schepen te gaan rammen.

I love how this has been reported as if the Japanese boat "rammed" the Sea Sheppard boat intentionally. As others have noted you can see the boat accelerate TOWARDS the whaler. It

Look closely at the video. The Japanese vessel was well clear until about 17 seconds in, when the ecoterrorists fired up their engines and drove in front of the vessel. The wake of the Japanese vessel (39-43s) shows a significant alteration to port to avoid the ecoterrorists, which they negated by driving in front of the other boat at the last second.

You can see the smaller boat was not moving by its wake.

Actually you can see it was moving slowly. Then at 0:15 the Ady Gil (smaller boat) guns it's throttle and puts itself farther in front of the bow of the whaliers ship. There "might" have been a scrape if the Ady Gil didn't punch the throttle. By lurching forward the Ady Gil INSURED they were hit.
