  • @spacefrogg5 your point? They are puppeteers. Their lips r supposed to move.

  • @spacefrogg5 The point of this show isn't ventriloquism, just using puppets to find a new way to convey things. :)

  • I can see her lips move

  • @spacefrogg5 They're not being ventriloquists, they're being puppeteers. how are you supposed to sing a song like this without your lips moving? :L

  • Atherton gives Kate a bit of a Midwestern accent- which would be fine if the show didn't take place in New York City!

  • @DiabloSandwich59 Yes, because travel from the Midwest to New York, as we all know, is impossible thanks to that big blank spot on the map in between the two that says "Here There Be Dragons".... so Kate has to be a New York native to live there.

  • We need veronica kuehn!!!!

  • For my sanity I should close the door and walk away....but I can't. I'm scared that it'll hurt too much.

  • im singing this for my exam, wow she is amazing

  • she is amazing

  • Anyone else think she'd be a brillaint Glinda in Wicked? xx

  • Her voice is amazing. Oh my God.

  • Goodness, since when were theatre voices so completely beautiful?! :') And what a song!

  • One of the very best Kates

  • So did prinston break up with kate???

  • @SummerAngelGirl Yep, but he plays a big part later in helping her reach her dream later and he got what he wanted so it's all good.

  • I think she looks so much prettier with the dark hair... She's always beautiful tho

  • wow...i got goosebumps.

  • @phorevarjb @JezabelCumming Guys, guys, guys! Relax. This version is sung by Julie Atherton. Stephanie D'Abruzzo was a member of the original cast. Stephanie has short, dark hair. Julie has longer, lighter brown hair. They are both excellent singers and are two separate people from two separate productions.

  • She's really good :). Wish I could sing like that

  • My best friend and I both agree that this song is the ultimate test of whether or not you really loved someone that you dated/got engaged to/divorced. If you can listen and not cry, then it wasn't love. If you cry, then it was love.

  • My favorite Kate/Lucy ever.

  • she has a pretty voice ^_^

  • I'm a guy and I'm singing this at my theatre group and I've never cried whilst singing a song before like I have this :'(

  • I know this is a bit off but does anyone know what vid it is when Princeston breaks up with Kate??........................,And amzing song Stephanie has a awesome voice thatd make anyone cry in this vid if you thought about your past

  • @JezabelCumming julie atherton sings this...

  • @phorevarjb I'm sorry.but it says Stephanie so Im sticking with that.

  • @JezabelCumming alright it clearly says that in the title of this video .... whatever

  • @phorevarjb You know what just shut up every other vid it says Stephanie! So I dont care what you think damn.

  • @JezabelCumming alright, your obviously a child, so i wont "shut up" but no other video says stephanie i can guarantee you, if so, PLEASE be so kind as to send me the link, and its not what i think its what I KNOW! HER NAME. IS. JULIE.

  • @phorevarjb Hahahha!!! Your real funny! Thinking I'm a child! An apparently that make's you what? Oh that's right a baby! I aint dumb moron! In any other video in the destriptions it has Stephanie!,An Fyi! I knew her name was Julie so I went along with it! So do me a favor an shut up an look it up your self!

  • She is amazing!

  • Stephanie did great, but this is mind blowing.

  • Comment removed

  • @stephanregorroger2 her microphone!

  • this one video alone made julie arthenon my favorite kate monster puppeteer even BEFORE stephanie d'abruzzo whom i admire VERY much. julies voice is so beautiful in this video that even if she hit a flat note the next note would cover it.

  • in the beginning, doesnt she look like the lead singer of flyleaf? :O

or is that just my eyes being weird?

  • Much better than the original. Love her!

  • I'd just like to say, I love Julie Atherton. x

  • Shes playing sister mary robert in sister act the musical uk tour soon :)

  • I really, really love this. Julie is definitley the best Kate Monster out there; she's perfect for the part. Phenomenal voice, and adorable puppeterring. J'adore <3

  • speechless great performance^^

  • Straight into my heart... loved the song before.. I am in a situation...I have this song present all the time..... and her interpretation is amazing...

  • @joesingsbadly if you mean the current tour, it was probably Racheal jerram

  • The voice is freaking amazing but the puppeteering is unconvincing

  • @mrphantomb It was quite difficult for the OLC. The original show had American puppeteers as the characters and it showcased their skills at operating various puppets. The London cast were almost entirely stage actors with a few classes on puppetry. Operating a puppet is really quite difficult, she does an alright job for someone with only a couple of years experience, on stage.

    I'm with lionheart007, Atherton's 'Special' is rockin'.

  • she really belts that last bit in her chest voice doesnt she! amazingg

  • I really liked the Kate Monster who performed at Sheffield. She sounded/looked a lot like Lea Michele which can hardly be a bad thing.

  • @JoeSingsBadly I think you mean Rachel Jerram then...for future reference.

  • @JoeSingsBadly I saw it at Sheffield too and totally agree, she was great. Especially when singing Lucy the Slut's song :P I think her version is quite a lot better than the original, much more sexy.

  • Amazing! Class! Style! I can actually listen to her forever!

  • Outstandingly beautiful voice! I never heard her sing before now, as all the musical numbers I know are from the American cast.

  • i love the show and this is my fave song by Kate!!!

  • @ allyxanna1999 yeah they do it in the first act. (after lucy sings Special ^^)

  • Don't Kate and Princeton hook up??? Just asking

  • @allyxanna1999 They do, yes. It is the prelude to the song "You Can Be As Loud As The Hell You Want."

  • Having seen Avenue Q countless times, Julie was the definitive Kate Monster and singing this song, she never failed to reduce me to tears :)

  • Julie concentrates too much on herself rather than the ppuppet

  • @Brianmaitland you'll find that when you're really connecting emotionally to a song, you go through the emotions of that song without thinking it. I don't think she's doing this purposely, the fact is that to sing a song this emotional well, you have to be emotional. Her puppet skills are excellent, almost unconscious, in the end it just depends on what the audience wants to look at, YOU try drawing focus to a puppet a fifth of your size with you right next to it!

  • Julie has sucha stunning voice!

  • I love Julie. :) I listened to this song nonstop when I broke up with my boyfriend. It's words just rang so true. <3

  • She. Is. Amazing.

  • Warning: Do not watch while experiencing relationship problems. You will cry.

  • @Ihateclamp my girl friend sent me here :'(

  • @Ihateclamp True, that :'(

  • @Ihateclamp Made the mistake of listening to the Avenue Q soundtrack during a long car ride a couple days after my boyfriend broke up with me. Could not hold myself together at all once this song hit. Even when seeing the show a few months later I teared up during it because of that memory

  • @Ihateclamp Or while single

  • @Ihateclamp too late !

  • I like Stephanie and Julie because they both brought something new to the character. Their performances are certainly not the same, but the differences that they gave to the role both are perfect for Kate Monster. I really couldn't choose which one would be my favorite.

  • I can't decide which cast I like better, the London cast or the American one, but both are amazing.

  • does anyone else think Julie's joice would be perfect for a Disney fairytale princess or similar character.

Amazigly beautiful voice, her tone gives each note some great personality to the song

  • @R0bertyb0b yes!!!!!!

  • @R0bertyb0b have you seen her in Potrait of a Princess? It is on here as well

  • Julie rocks!

  • Her voice is breathtaking

  • I'm not crazy about the midwestern accent. I realize it's part of the character but I just don't care for it much. That being said, Julie has an incredible voice. The dynamics are great.

  • i cant believe people have actually disliked this video! I personally love this song and it really touches my heart! And Julie here has really caught the essence of Kate Monster. beautiful!

  • she sounds like kristen chenoweth

  • The BEST version of this ever!

  • this is amazing! I really love it!!!

  • to be honest, i don't like the american musical singers, they always sound like a chipmunk-version of themselves...

  • i've never seen this show all the way through...who is she singing to?

  • @vivaelphaba SPOILER WARNING

    Princeton :)

  • @vivaelphaba Princeton.

  • AMAZING!!!!! xxxxxxxxx

  • i think they should have an original london cast recording

  • shes very Kristin Chenoweth-esque

  • oh yes! i was trying to figure out who she sounded like/reminded me of - you're right, very much like KC

  • I wished I could have seen it.

  • I love Julie's voice- I'm so sad that Avenue Q has closed :(

  • @SpiceBaby47 Don't worry, it still plays :) Just somewhere different.

  • This is utterly amazing. I wish the original London cast did a recording so we could have her studio version. I honestly don't know who does better Stephanie or Julie they're both amazing. I love how Julie says "walk away".

  • I love how during the song she is suppose to be all depressed and sad and at the end she says bye to everyone in such a happy way.

  • that gave me goosebumps :) she's amazing!!

  • Julie Atherton took this role to a whole new level.

  • I'm surprised how much I love her voice because I'm so into the original broadway recording, but she's really wonderful! Her acting, her voice, it's all stellar. :D

  • Julie is awesome. This is such a touchy song, and Julie really gets the acting done and really convinces us as Kate. She's awesome and no one can deny that!

  • she is amazingg!!!!

  • Woo she's good!

  • Julie really embodies Kate for me. Stephanie's voice is gorgeous too, but I just really like Julie's voice for this song and Kate's speaking voice.

  • Totally amazing... The whole show is tremendous... Funny & great to listen to in the car.. I have got funny looks from other drivers though! (windows rolled down) bad move!! Lol Thanx for posting :P x

  • I have to say, I like Julie more than I like Stephanie. She just embodies Kate Monster for me. :)

  • I saw Julie in March in NY, I loove her! Props to Stephanie, and I mean she is the original, but I think I prefer Julie.

  • I Love this! Saw Avenue Q in London earlier this year and it was AWESOME

  • I should say I prefer Julie...but I love Steph...but I see it like this...I'll say they are the letter K, for Kate.

Steph is a lower case k...get's the point across, always cute, but kinda small and doesn't stand out as much. Julie is like a capital K, a big point, impressive and stands out against all the letters in the sentence.

Her voice just stands out more even though they both are similar...she is capital to Stephs lower case.

All other versions are completely different letters.

  • She is sooo amazing.

  • what the hell is up with the puppet? it looks like E.T.'s girlfriend if it grew hair!

  • she regularly places the slut girl, i think

  • i think julie is amazing! she's defo better than the orgianl! her voice and the emotion she puts into it, just brings the puppet alive! YOU ROCK JULIE!!!

  • Julie Atherton is a goddess. I saw her live and almost died.

  • i'm in love with her voice.

  • the original is always gonna be better :)

  • @Gleek216 :/ julie's acting, sweetie...that's her Kate Monster voice. plus yes cheno is a legend on broadway but julie atherton is equally as amazing, if not better. the control the two of them have over their voices is incredible. stop attempting to create fights and go back to your auto tuned Glee.

  • @Nikkiscamful I think the puppets add character to the show that actors wouldn't possess and, if you've seen the show, you know they can get away with more with puppets than they could with real actors on stage but honestly, it makes the characters easier to pic out you know?

just to make things clear, this is not an arguement so please don't be offended or anything(because some people do that when you try to have a conversation).

  • She is wonderful!!!!

  • i love julie atherton so much

  • I love that Julie has such greast control over her voice. It's such a rare quality nowadays. She can totally belt out songs in a jazzed up amazing way and yet she holds the right amount of restraint for the character's needed singing voice. I love it!

  • She's really good, but she totally copied Kristin Chenoweth's style of acting and singing

  • @Gleek216 Cheno is amazing, but really? Everyone has their own style, all you're doing is trying to start a fight.

  • @Gleek216 Wah? I am not gonna dog on you liking Glee like some of these people, because it's pretty alright to me, but dude...she is totally not like her in the least bit.

Cheno may be cutesy in most of her characters but the fact is she is a powerhouse operatic singer...Her vibrato dominates her vocals...Julie manages to hide a vibrato while singing and still being mild when she needs to and strong when she needs to. Completely different yet both talented.

  • This is fantastic ^^

  • Go see julie tomorrow night at the DELFONT ROOM at the PRINCE OF WALES THEATRE. She launches her new album NO SPACE FOR AIR. Starts at 7pm.xxx

  • Julie is amazing at this song!!! I could really feel the emotion in it! it's simply Wonderful!

  • she is an origelnal cast person i realey like her puppet voice its so funny

  • I really like her! Like a lot! She sold that song. :)

  • Original cast in the UK

  • She has got one hell of a voice on her! I love this song, and its the best version i've heard of it! Loveee it! The end is gorgeous! LOVE it :) xx

  • She's be a brilliant Glinda

  • She's amaaaazing

  • julie's new album - NO SPACE FOR AIR - Will be available on 06.06.10

Only a few spaces left for her launch concert at the Delfont Room, Prince of Wales Theatre - 7pm - 6th June 2010.

  • Omg this song is absolutely amazing the words are so true!!

  • I love her as Kate Monster. Her voice is so...loooovely

  • she needs to be in wicked..

  • Everytime I see these videos, there's always some comment about how the actors are pulling away the limelight from the puppets. I've always seen them as the same. In the back of my head, I see the facial expressions of the live person being on the puppet. I think that's how you're supposed to see it. The puppet is the character, the actor behind the character is the true emotion underneath.

  • i really like her voice. especialy at the end. is she the original cast memeber or a different one?

  • @ben5leto she was in the original London cast :)

  • @ben5leto i saw this on saturday and she was playing kate monster and she was in the programme

  • @ben5leto The original singer is the amazing Stephanie D'Abruzzo, but I love this version too! Julie Atherton's is the second best version!

  • So amazing. <3

  • I feel like she was showboating a little too much. It became more about her voice than about creating the illusion of the puppet.

  • is it just me or does the puppet look odd?

  • @NERDY12345678910 It's a rehearsal puppet.

  • the origional London cast were the best cast ever! (in my opinion) they had the likes of Julie & Simon Lipkin & Jon Robyns :) AWESOME!

  • I dunno, Im liking the new cast. Tom Parsons and Paul Spicer are great...Cassidy Jansons is great except maybe for her puppetry. Sion Lloyds back for Brian and Rachel Jerram is just awesome, plus theres Delroy Atkinson as Gary...dunno what Jacqueline Tates as Christmas Eve is like though. But other than that...THIS new cast seems the best to me :P

  • I think she's trying too hard to make it a character voice. The vowels come out sounding weird. I like her voice though.

  • I like Stephanie better :) But Julie looks like she could have been Glinda in Wicked, anyone know if she was??

  • Great Song, great voice, great singer. And of course, great musical.

  • Such a true song...

  • I love Julie better than Steph because she sounds so much more feisty.

  • I like both Stephanie & Julie's Kate but i really love Julie's voice!!!

  • I see the puppet work as STELLAR in this performance. The mouth movements are spot on, down to the ending of the notes and breaths before bigger vocal pushes. Love it! Great!

  • if you watch one of the backstage clips one of the actors says they're taught to do that so it makes it seem like they have legs x

  • Actually, i saw that. But they nromally move the puppets more realstically.

  • That is how they are taught how to move the puppets when they walk. I know because I was taught that when I did competitions with puppets. It is suppose to be them walking and when you really walk we do bounce up and down a little bit. They just over exaggerate it for the puppets so the audience knows whats going on.

  • @xinsanityxlives im sorry but i do have to correct you on this.. before they start avenue q. weather it be broadway or west end they attend puppet school. and becuase they have no LEGS.. they are told to jult the puppet to make it look like there walking... and yes people so shake like that. since we go up and down when we walk.. .. sorry but u had to be corrected! :d x

  • her voice sound kinda like my friends.........

  • Go Kate Monster :D

  • Hmm, she has one of the best voices, but I don't call her the best Kate actress ever. The original knew how to give more energy, and when to switch from the pupet to her.

  • @neshannockfez rly? i think she is better than the original cuz she does great as kate and lucy. and i think the original was great as kate, but not nearly as good with lucy. agree to disagree lol

  • heh, maybe it's nostalgia goggles.

  • I agree. She's okay as Kate, but she just IS Lucy for me.

  • I agree; the original does a better job at Kate, but Julie does a fabulous job at Lucy. I love Kate's Lucy.

  • Kate's Lucy? I think you mean Julie's, lol.

  • @chrissykinsx Since Stephanie D'Abruzzo was nominated for the Tony in 2004, I think it's safe to say she's the best at Kate xD

  • @zeldamaddie

Just because someone was nominated for a Tony, doesn't mean the takeover performer wasn't better. e.g. Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis.

People have there different strengths and takeover's are often much stronger than the original. And she didn't even win the Tony.

  • @TheHattie10 I didn't mean necessarily that Julie isn't as good as Stephanie. I was just making note that she was the original and she was picked because she was the best fit for the role. It's my opinion, don't take it too much in depth. I love Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis as well, so that's a moot point with me :P

  • What would I give to see her live in Avenue Q - I love her!
