Just listen more to some of the Jeremy Soule´s soundtracks. Seems like you know only Kotor. Total annihilation, Warhammer 40k DoW, Supreme Commander, Guild wars, Icewind dale.....those are the top ones for me. Of course Inon Zur(Dragon Age, Icewind dale II) and Harry Gregson Williams(Metal gear solid) are also great composers.

I'd have to nominate Morrowind/Oblivion (it's quite simular). Just having a title screen with either of those songs makes me feel like an explorer. Not too flashy, not to subtle, exactly right.

Hey strongo the winner of this video is Monkey Island. This game was released by the end of 1990, at that time Super Nintendo wasn't even out in the USA... This game isn't a next gen at all !

Most of the Halo 1 soundtrack/ The socom 3 main theme /Final fantasy crisis core - The price of freedom/ and battlefield 1942 are easily the most epic/elite themes out of ALL game themes.

While there are many others out there which are good and even great they fall short of what these others achieved.

There is no right or wrong answer for things like this. But I do think that you metalmantis should open your eyes to some of the retro video-game songs. You might not change your view on them, but at least you'll have more of an informed opinion.

@lewis128 as for an informed opinion, i'm not a retro gamer, so im afraid i dont know many of the old themes. Yet music from the 'classics' to me is like a single violin player, while it has the potential to be inspiring, it cannot capture the frequently epic nature of an entire orchestra.

No offence kid, but I think you need to listen to alot more video game music. These are all more recent music fromm current and last gen consoles. Try looking into the music of other game systems rather than just the ones you play. NES and SNES had the greatest music ever.

@metalmantis1 The "Super Mario Bros", "Final Fantasy" or "Zelda" Themes are well known. It is not important wether a tune is 16 Bit or orchestrated. The arrangement, the mood, the inspiration are important.

No way, the best video game themes are the ones that identify the games they were made for best and with utmost excellence. When you hear them that you just feel like playing the game. Be it MIDI sounds or orchestral. When you hear the Zelda theme you automatically feel to be in Hyrule: excellence!

BTW, with games like Mario the first one was made in that MIDI-era and has changed since accordingly, resulting in orchestral music in Mario Galaxy. Still the original is best.
