I want to help people too but it seems like social anxiety is holding me back. I have always been a very nice and helpful person but since i got social anxiety i am just very depressed all the time
yeh, helping people is the only thing that helps me with my depression and my sa, my mom is the same way she's always too busy helping other people to help herself.
i just realized the same thing today ironically. Have had SAD for years and my friend told me "don't you realize that you're hurting people?" But honestly, you HAVE to think about yourself too, just try to keep the balance, but this is an excellent step....I LOST MY FRiENDS, evry one of them due to this disease, i guess we in the fight together...so glad to see another black person like myself tho (it can be really hard for us with the tuff confident stereotypes we get). we there together bro
I will say this from experience. I do tend to get satisfaction from helping and giving to other people, but that is only if it's the people that I care about or it is obvious the person needs help. The saying, "it is better to give than receive" is actually true. While you may not get any material benefits from it, you will most likely get intrinsic benefits from it. That benefit is the satisfaction of doing good for the fellow man or woman. But you still got to look out for yourself too now!
Hey Chris - while I do think helping others and making other peoples lives better is a really good thing - at the same time I think its really important you look out for yourself as well. Constantly making others happy regardless of how it makes you feel is not good. I think everyone is selfish to some degree, dont beat yourself up over it. Kudos to you for wanting to make a difference in peoples lives though, lots of people dont think about that
Although it's great to realize that self importance can get out of hand, ultimately we are all about our self experience in this life. The only thing that I've come to understand is that remember how to love...everyone. Every situation your in, every person you are lucky enough to call friend...love them. Take care...
Remember to stay strong dude! Selfishness is also a problem of mine but I do remember I have such great people around me that I try to pay my respects anyway I can. See your weaknesses and do what you can to improve them.

I think most people with SA are selfish...it's just another hurdle we have to jump and overcome.
