shame to shatter your bubble lennon but mr Gabriel is not gay...been married twice (to women) and if you dont like this....why dont you go play some beatles...or wings maybe? or just stop wasting your time looking like a twat on ere.
This was edited on 3/4 tape with both channels and then dubbed to Beta SP a few years later. This video came from the Beta SP. The mono sound might have happened when I used my old computer editor to post the video.
Phil Collins is a great musician. Unfortunately his skills often don't translate to songwriting (a few notable exception).
No one can really deny his capabilities behind a kit, though. Prog, big band, jazz fusion, Motown, pure pop...he's played them all and played them all effectively, grinding out his own style along the way.
For PG fans, listen to 'Security' and tell me the drumming isn't out-and-out brilliant.
Intruder has the rep of being an early drum loop...I hear the term "gated" echnique often for the that track. What does that mean? Any musicians out there that can explain.
I guess no PG3 no big drum sound of the 80's. Sorry Power Staion. Sorry Lets Dance record. Sorry Sly Fox. I'm sure someone with John Bonham in his head and the Sugarhill Rap in his heart would have stumbled across it . Or Nile Rodgers would have figured it out.
thesecretlivesofcats- The "Gated" effect is essentially like reverb that is compressed or shortened so that the effect does not echo/extend/decay beyond a certain point. If I remember correctly, it was originally done with a limiter/compressor unit hooked up to a reverb unit. Since then, digital units have recreated the same effect.
The drums was also recorded with room mics (the reverb you hear is not artificial) which is gated by a noise gate so that it shuts down quite suddenly. This signal is fed into a very fast compressor to exaggerate the reverb. This signal is mixed with the usual close-miked drums.
The one I am familiar with came from the "Against All Odds" Soundtrack from the movie by the same name - circa 1984 or 1985. Fun movie, and some great songs. Kid Creole and The Coconuts appeared in this movie and also contributed a song, which probably doesn't get the respect it should - it was a nice little song.
I think you'll find that what minujk means is that Gabriel was singing motown stuff live long before Phil Collins had a hit with 'You can't hurry love'. On Gabriel's first solo tour in 77 he was singing Marvin Gaye's 'Ain't that peculiar' and he often made reference to motown influence in early interviews. To be fair though, it hardly matters.
Mike Rutherford had a great song on the sound track Remember, Peter is the master. On ALL of phil collins solo stuff,he stold Peter's musicians and ideas. Peter did old Motown songs, phil copied. phil had initial solo success in the '80's that for a time surpassed Peter. Peter found greater success and today an old Peter track holds up as where a phil track SUCKS! I want a real reunion of Genesis with Peter and David. phil could play the drums although Manu or Morata would be better.
Can you quote me a musician who Collins 'stole'? Collins brought musicinas to Gabriel. John Giblin for instance who played on Gabriel's melt album came via Collins and Brand X. Paul Weller was introduced to Gabriel by Collins. To say Phil Collins has copied off Peter Gabriel is ridiculous. Two great musicians beyond compare.
There is an alternate verson that was released on a single. It's different than the album version -- the tempo is a bit slower, and it was co-produced by Nile Rodgers. I like this version (the album version) better.
awesome video!

Love it! Would be great if you could re-do with a HQ quality recording of the music.

There is only the left audio channel for this, one speaker gets it and the other doesn't.

@SquirrelGott I guess this was recorded on a monophonic VCR and transferred using one as well?

@crowT10 Awesome editing by the way! I love the song and the video. Surprised Peter did not make one himself to accompany this song.

I mean "Intruder". 'Security' is the name of an album that Jerry Marotta played on, not Phil.

Thanks snoopy. I'm not wrong in concluding the big drum sound everyone wanted in the 80's after Lets Dance?

Just FYI, Peter Gabriel did the "Motown Thing" AFTER Phil Collins had done that sort of thing.
They are both great musicians.
Why is it that everytime there is a video of Peter, some people like to diss Phil? Weird.

There is a different version that I remember - sounds much better.
I like this song because it was before Peter got into all the overuse of African rhythms.

You're right. This one's kinda lame. The other version is from Against All Odds. It's playing when Jeff Bridges is in the nightclub.
