Looks pretty cool, I can't believe all the stuff this can do.
But I have a question about the video itself. Why was your video intro and "outro" so loud but your voice so quiet? That seems like a basic thing for a Logic Pro user to mess up. =P
just tried the polyphonic experiment and I'm getting a flutter if the sample is sped up a lot or slowed down a lot. Am I doing something wrong or is that ...just the way it is?
Hi, I got a huge question for you....In your videos explaining about Logic Pro's EXS24 Sampler, you say that "EXS24 is not a very POWERFUL SAMPLER" What do you mean by "not a powerful sampler"???? I own an Akai S1100, is THAT concidered powerful?? Please help me because I am very confused and ready to make some changes if EXS24 is not good enough
A very interesting video indeed. What I'm gonna do is go get some sleep because I'm pretty much dead but then I'm gonna test out this video and take a look at your other uploads. You may have very much earned yourself another subscriber.
hi i use FL studio and im woundering if it's worth getting a mac so i can get logic? as it's alot of money i am woundering if i should keep fl or buy logic, like is it worth the money? cheers,
@ChronicGod420 dude, I've been producing music for 4-5 years with FL Studio xDD I think I know what it takes to use it... myself I listen to my own music, and I know how to make music the way I want it to sound xD
I know how FL works dude, check out my channel ; )
@SjokkoladeBolleMusa Oh. Well, in case case, my bad. But you have a good point, a good producer can make anything work. But I used FL and for me, Reason worked a lot better. I'd like to start using Cubase tho. That seems interesting at the moment.
Hey, long time pro tools user here learning logic 9. can you explain the grid and how to change it to reflect different time and beats. I find that the smart setting isn't so smart at times and wish things were done a bit more like pro tools. But, I want to learn logic!
Great video, thanks! Nice, easy-going style makes me want to watch more.
I had to just look in my Logic version (Pro 8) to see if I had that "convert region to EXS" thing but alas, no. Guess I'm stuck with the long way around for now.
Hey David Erl, Could you tell me which video to watch to explain the process of cutting an audio track up into samples? this videos shows me how to make an ESX instrument, i just wanna know how to cut it up into bits like you did just then.
@foljs just a little clarification. Is the screen capture program one that comes with your mac or is it a program you added? If added, what's it called? I have one of the new macbook pros so if it comes with it, that would be great. Thanks. Love your Logic tutorials.
will logic 9 run good on an imac i3 or power book i5? or should i just get logic 8? i dont know macs or logic at all and will take the plunge but i wanna do my homework first. if you or anyone can answer i would be more then greatful
im dont mostly straight Virtual instrument work with audio recording from time to time.
@j1mbafr0sty yes, logic 9 will run fine of iMac i3 or MacBook Pro (not Powerbook anymore) i5. As in, you will have tons of audio tracks (practically unlimited), and all the audio instruments / plugins you'd care to run simultaneously --except if you make extremely involved and busy arrangements.
Hi I just bought an Apple and Logic studio 9, and I haven't a clue where to start! I want to produce electrnic (Trance) music, and this software just seems too complicated.. My friend says to buy Reason 5, as that's a lot simpler. But I don't want to spend a few hundred pounds again on another software. So my Q is, has Logic studio 9 got everything REason has?
I also just moved from PS to an i7 iMac with Logic 9 - what an awesome platform and program. Loving these tutorials too. Many thanks for sharing. Keep 'em coming. R
but Ableton has done all of this stuff since ages ago and no one is braging about it. does temp changing instantly with no file analysis, the midi trick is also something that up ableton users have been able to do for ages. i was considering getting logic discounted with the mac, but after seeing this tute im just sticking with ableton ;P
but with the EXS24 new shortcut, shown I find that the sample made is not available in the EXS24 in other projects, just the one where it was made. Is this right??? I've searched and it can't find it. Help!!?? !! thanks
Okay the new project can see it in the Browser window but I can do nothing with it EXCEPT import the original audio file I made the samples with, so I'd have to do it all over again. NOT what I was hoping for.
@BeaverClocks Thanks for your reply, how I thought of it was that Reason was more for composing music in general (using midi), and that DAW's like logic, FL, ableton, would be geared more towards the beats / loops, sampling aspects.
Hey !!! i am actually a guitar player. can i transfer a music file (mp3, Midi etc) into Logic 09 then remove the original guitar playing on the file and play along with the rest of the instuments instead???
@caddytheproducer because its features mostly blind the users. i guess 90% of them who like logic never really use all the options it provides. also pushed by being only released for apple.. the ppl who failed using windows and believe their mac on intel cpus provides more security and stability, too funny they got no clue about cpu architectures and the possibilites it opens for hackers... neumann is no good.
i really don't trust any of the flex or elastic audio stuff for quantizing audio. you get too many artifacts.. beat detective or manually chopping more reliable
:Sigh: Every time i load up logic i get reminded of how much easier it would be to do inside live :( its a shame because i think my music sounds better when made in logic....im not sure why.
What is the command for how you chopped up that region according to the transients at about 3:24 of the video? That could be a huge time saver for drum editing!
hey man logic 9 is making a really weird noise on instruments and vocals, some call it white noise. sounds like a bomb. Any idea what this is coming from. I cant record with it. Also i was not recording to my 1tb hardrive because I was just messin around at first so im thinking my system macbook pro 500gb 2.66ghz, 4g, 5400rpm just got overloaded
I know nothing, but I imagine that the key settings that you say are different in 9 can be reset to your liking....
I'll never beat this level...I'm near 60 and just climbing back in the boat...hell, I was doing work on an ESQ1 way back..but have to say, what was great about it, was you got a lot of work done really fast. Oh well....hmmm. time to look at Kindgirls....
idk about in snow leopard but you can change logic specific key bindings in reg leopard in the system preferences/keyboard and mouse/keyboard shortcuts. hope that helps
Man!!! you are the best!! simply the best!! I learn to much with your tutorials and i´m spanish but you explain than good that learn with you it´s very easy!! Thanks
Here's a question: the flex view works great by just clicking on command+f but sometimes I do that, and the option to analyze the track comes up, but then it doesn't do anything... is there a flex mode that you have to be in in order for the flex to actually be adjustable?
@PhilCollins93 i think is because he had logic 8 and got the upgrade to logic 9,so instead of eliminating logic 8 it gives u the option to have both to choose from.
Yeah i know, i have logic... if you go to your menu bar in logic and click on "Logic" and then "About Logic" you'll see the Rewire and Propellerhead logos... Ask anybody who has it.
huh, cool? i think propeler's makes the rewire client though, cause i saw the same on sonar and pro tools and cubase and all the other stuff, you know how steinberg is the creator of vst, or what ever.
Logic uses rewire which is a technology created by Propellerhead years ago. Logic is now Apple since they bought Emagic, the original makers of Logic who started with Creator and then Notator (1988), before giving the name logic after 1993.
logic is better for all around work, the sounds from it are cleaner, and sometimes too good, but reason is powerfull with in itsel although if you wanna record audio directly into the DAW Logic is better, i dont think you can in Reason
I just took a look at the pyramind website you guys are great and I love that set up NICE..Im very interested in taking courses for film scoring with pyramind but I live in wisconsin any suggestions?
i cant beleive logic didnt do this already. ableton will do the first two with one little action. puts me off to logic a bit. just bought it anyways, but ableton ftw
@25ent Stop using capitals at the start of every word as if they're all proper nouns. And just export the synth notes as 24-bit WAV or AIFF then import into EXS 24. Simple.
Tip for the Ableton users... Ableton LE can be upgraded to Ableton Intro... and what's that gotta do with Logic... well Intro supports Rewire from now on! ;-)
@geek180: Logic will Flex any audio. All you have to do with external audio is set up your project to match the original BPM (which you can do with the BPM counter IO insert that ships with Logic), then do whatever SFLN did. :)
@SFlogicNinja... your vids are great, man. I just mapped a new sampler bank like you demo'd... awesome. Thx for squeezing your time for these. Looking forward to your take on that Axiom controller someday. Ciao.
HEY NINJA can you do the first step (changing tempos of imported audio) with audio NOT from Logic?? I work with audio made in other programs from other people, can I still do the same thing? Or is the fact that it's from logic just enables the program to instantly know what the tempo is upon import?
Help!! I am new to my mac... Does anyone know how David was able to select his finder by that pop up window.. I don't know how to get that small window to pop up to select between icons on the dock, like he did in this video. Thanks so much..
Super Simple - What you are see David doing is utilizing the "command - tab" keystroke. This is used to switch between open applications. Alternatively, you could just click on the finder icon in the dock, and a new finder window will open as the top window.
The convert to sampler is good and all but it's easy enough to drag samples into the EXS 24 in Logic Pro 8. I suppose what would be more convenient is if in Logic Pro 9 it automatically adds a fade-in and fade-out to the samples to prevent that noise you get due to starting and ending above or below the zero-crossing. I always had to manually render each audio region as a new region w/ the fade-in and fade-outs to prevent artifacts when triggering grains in the EXS 24.
HEY Dave! Great videos! I'm a new subscriber, just wondering if you have any thoughts/advice on recording and mixing vocals in Logic 9. I know you're busy, but any help or direction would rock my world!
I'm glad that they are making it all less labyrinthine and confusing. I know that purists moan but I am just grateful for the better workflow. Cheers.
The import feature is crazy too. Loving 9 but hating the many bugs in it. Personally I suggest that for multiple samples go with an 8 or earlier until the bugs are worked out. Big ups Dave!!!
Glad to see you back. I have learned tons from you. Thanks. I have tuts myself and one that addresses some bugs within logic 9 sampler instrument. It doesn't load multiple samples correctly and from my personal research you can't set loop points in it. Also if you convert to sam track it only saves to that proj folder instead of entire sampler lib. Just a heads up. I still use 8 bcuz of so many bugs with the exs24. Complained 2 months ago myself. Hopefully they're not getting lazy.
yea just keep flaunting your logic9 around while us poor guys are still on that 8 lol.... need a crap load more plug-ins but i love the interface. So simple and in depth
lmao hahahahaha tell you the truth, for me, i have just as much fun using reason 4.0 which i got for free and can be used on mac and windows. Dont get me wrong, 1 is a toy the other a beast, but for my purposes reason almost has everything i need
yes i have. I always thought the way reason dealt with audio in the past was quite annoying. I write a lot of music around vocals these days and it would be nice to do section by section like you can do within logic rather than having to start the song back to ware the audio clip midi note starts. Anyways looks like they fixed that in record.

writofmandamus 1 year ago
@writofmandamus
if u really just going for techno and techno only, reason is a much easier experience.
though logic can also achieve reasons's midi power, reason is built for techno music.
i would recommand logic if u have the cash. but then reason and logic rewire combo is the most killer.

logic is the program for most producers around the world rite now.
if u r looking for looping sampling, cubase, ableton is great.
logic is great caz it is all in one package. strong audio power, midi diversity, flex time and beat cutting and slicing.
but still reason's midi capability is still beastly.

logic is better for all around work, the sounds from it are cleaner, and sometimes too good, but reason is powerfull with in itsel although if you wanna record audio directly into the DAW Logic is better, i dont think you can in Reason

Is There A Way I Can Sample A Synth Out Of Reason Into Logic Via ExS24 Without It Losing Any Saturation Or Quality?
25ent 2 years ago
@25ent Stop using capitals at the start of every word as if they're all proper nouns. And just export the synth notes as 24-bit WAV or AIFF then import into EXS 24. Simple.

Oh and forgot to mention... the upgrade is free!

Tip for the Ableton users... Ableton LE can be upgraded to Ableton Intro... and what's that gotta do with Logic... well Intro supports Rewire from now on! ;-)

It is actually something he does when he edits the video in ScreenFlow.

Logic Pro 5 works just fine in OS X 10.5 on my dual G5. Just don't ask Apple for support - but who does that anyway.
realkuhl 2 years ago
@geek180: Logic will Flex any audio. All you have to do with external audio is set up your project to match the original BPM (which you can do with the BPM counter IO insert that ships with Logic), then do whatever SFLN did. :)

@SFlogicNinja... your vids are great, man. I just mapped a new sampler bank like you demo'd... awesome. Thx for squeezing your time for these. Looking forward to your take on that Axiom controller someday. Ciao.

I feel so ripped off it won't work on the G5!!!
Convert to sampler feature is huge!!!
I need 9... F U Apple!
RecordProducer 2 years ago
They had to abandon all support for non-Intel machines to make things work better in 9.. at least that's my theory.

HEY NINJA can you do the first step (changing tempos of imported audio) with audio NOT from Logic?? I work with audio made in other programs from other people, can I still do the same thing? Or is the fact that it's from logic just enables the program to instantly know what the tempo is upon import?

Nice. I see soundhack down there too. Very cool. Keep up the great videos!

Help!! I am new to my mac... Does anyone know how David was able to select his finder by that pop up window.. I don't know how to get that small window to pop up to select between icons on the dock, like he did in this video. Thanks so much..
smoochdaddy 2 years ago
Super Simple - What you are see David doing is utilizing the "command - tab" keystroke. This is used to switch between open applications. Alternatively, you could just click on the finder icon in the dock, and a new finder window will open as the top window.

White flash happens in 10.5 as well when you do something that isn't recognized in LP9.

DrWumpa 2 years ago
@DrWumpa You could use a keymap
GrubeMasterFlex 2 years ago
1. Hilarious "waiting" edit.
2. Flextime IS beautiful and coverting sampler (or audio tracks) is just amazing....it's almost too easy.
3. Can you import your old Key commands from logic 8? Or would you/one have to reinput them into logic 9?
(MC Control is awesome for this btw ... very few key commands at this point)
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!

Cheers.

You rock Dave. Seriously, the time you are saving people is priceless. You are my first and only subscription to date.
tyrant2424 2 years ago
The import feature is crazy too. Loving 9 but hating the many bugs in it. Personally I suggest that for multiple samples go with an 8 or earlier until the bugs are worked out. Big ups Dave!!!
dyc1000 2 years ago
Glad to see you back. I have learned tons from you. Thanks. I have tuts myself and one that addresses some bugs within logic 9 sampler instrument. It doesn't load multiple samples correctly and from my personal research you can't set loop points in it. Also if you convert to sam track it only saves to that proj folder instead of entire sampler lib. Just a heads up. I still use 8 bcuz of so many bugs with the exs24. Complained 2 months ago myself. Hopefully they're not getting lazy.

lmao hahahahaha tell you the truth, for me, i have just as much fun using reason 4.0 which i got for free and can be used on mac and windows. Dont get me wrong, 1 is a toy the other a beast, but for my purposes reason almost has everything i need
JoshuaHults 2 years ago
have you checked out Record by propellerheads?
It looks like a beast as well...
SFLogicNinja 2 years ago
yes i have. I always thought the way reason dealt with audio in the past was quite annoying. I write a lot of music around vocals these days and it would be nice to do section by section like you can do within logic rather than having to start the song back to ware the audio clip midi note starts. Anyways looks like they fixed that in record.
JoshuaHults 2 years ago
Every time I see that little thumbnail telling me you have made a new video it brings a little sunshine into my life. Thank you :)

you are the most awkward, non-funny, weird assed, dorkiest, painful to watch guy ever, but you sure know what your talking about, so I bear the malarkey and quirky, irritating personality traits to get the priceless info.

Anyway thank for all the great tuts, sflogicninja!
