May I ask which soundcard you were using for this recording? And were you using the adat input? If so, were you using the internal clock or slaving from the soundcard? Thanks.
@theinck This is eight microphone preamps and not an audio interface so it will need to be connected to an interface in order to get those signals to your computer. This could be via its digital ADAT connect or using the analogue outputs on the rear of the unit.
@FocusriteTV This unit is designed to be a companion piece to the Focusrite Sapphire 56 or 40 by giving you 8 additional preamps to your existing firewire interface. I bought the Sapphire Pro 40, which has only 8 preamps. If I bought the OctoPre, I could connect it to the Sapphire Pro and get 16 tracks all powered by one Firewire port. If you are just looking for a firewire interface with at least 8 preamps, get the Sapphire Pro 40 or 56 first.
@jasonperno The OctoPre connects to a Pro 40 or Liquid Saffire 56 via ADAT to give you an additional 8 analogue inputs. If 8 analogue inputs are sufficient you can use a Pro 40 or Liquid Saffire 56, however connecting an OctoPre Mk II is a great way of adding a further 8 analogue inputs to bring the total to 16 analogue inputs, allowing 16 mics or other analogue sources to be recorded simultaneously.
@FocusriteTV if i connect this optopre to an saffire pro 24 dsp via the optical cable will i have control of all 8 individual channels of the optopre when mixing down?
sorry if its a basic question this adding pres is new to me
@kellycarruthers Yes, you will record the 8 channels (from the Octopre) simultaneously and independently so you will have control of them individually when mixing. :)
Compression.. Compression.. Compression... It's a wonder there's any Dynamics left on the Track. I guess this is one of the Idiots that have contributed towards the louness war.
@therealKINDLE This type of compression is used to level out dynamic peaks in the audio and as a creative effect since adding compression is a form of amplitude modulation which 'thickens' the sound. This type of compression has been used for a long time and was around before the loudness war was an issue. The type of over compression that has led to the loudness war is the aggressive mix bus compression at the expense of the dynamics and life of the song.
@therealKINDLE You destroyed your own argument there by pointing out that there is in fact still dynamic range on the track. I agree emphatically that the excessive removal of dynamic range has been to the detriment of all but the one-hit-wonder brigade. However all of my favourite producers are masters of the CORRECT use of compression and seem able to make records sound like there is more going on in there - not less. Radio stations will kill everything anyway - no need for us to help them :)
do you know if it work with pro tools 8? I'm using digi002,but thought about connecting thru ADAT,can that be done?

@rockjpk If the interface works with PT, then yes.

Would like to hear a bit more of the drums and a bit less of that guy rambling on about compression...
Too many guys named Chris in one room anyway...
peace

@CardinalEgan The drum tracks are all available to hear on SoundCloud, see the description for a link.
