  • 8:02 is bela kissing mary lou?

  • i remember watching this as a 14yr old boy amazed at how good they were.

  • thanks for uploading!!

  • Bella was my coach for five years:)

  • they make bella seem like a scary person..but i bet he isnt

  • I don't understand why they're interviewing Nadia instead of Mary Lou Retton considering it's about the AMERICAN team. She's not as relevant to this story as Retton.

  • @zeldafreak701 Probably because she is such an icon. She took the sport to a whole new level and practically gave gymnastics value in the Olympics. She is credible in the sense that she knows what it takes to handle the competitions, the training...the fame. All that.... She was the first real gymnastics super star.

  • @TribalFaerie Actually that was Olga Korbut. But you're right about the other stuff.

  • y is moceanu in court?

  • @randomsmilezzz there was a lot of conflict with her parents, accusations that her father squandered her money among other things, and she filed for legal emancipation.

  • I hate to be a buzzkill but MLR would not be an Olympic champion if the 1984 games were a fully attended Olympics... I probably would have given it to Szabo over her anyway. The real gymnastics competition that year took place in Olomouc.

  • Did Shannon get two nose jobs plus veneers? She looks like a different person.

  • I was always curious - did Bela and/or Marta have a gymnastics background themselves? Were they former gymnasts?

  • @tmwalkerm Marta was, I think, but Bela was absolutely terrible at it. They were sports teachers who just got more interested in gymnastics than any other sport. They thought it was the best one for the kids who lived in their area, and then it took off.

  • @Elemarth Thanks, I always wondered how they got involved if they weren't former athletes, appreciate the response :).

  • The rest of the world are not ignorant, the USA were not as surprise winner in the Atlanta...not shocking.....though the screams of USA, USA were very annoying and that alone made people want the Russians, Ukrainians and Romanians win..

  • @emmyjo720 Your an idiot., you shouldn't talk, it's embarassing for you.

  • 'i think we're better than guys'... is she kidding? There is no comparison really

  • @MrArbitrager Actually she's right though. Mens bodies are built for the strength. Women have to work harder to be as strong as a man because their bodies are smaller and aren't built to carry as many muscles, if that makes sense. But you really can't compare the two, because womens is ALL lower body with the exception of bars and mens is ALL upper body. But I think they should take away mens floor and vault because they look stupid doing them.

  • i wish shannon miller didn't get a nose job. I liked her the way she was.

  • @lindseylee77 it was for health reasons, but yeah you can't even recognize her now.

  • they didnt mention that the soviet boycott the LA olympics when mary lou won the gold.. thats not fair and a little misleading..

  • We wont see another team Gold medal until at least 2016 or 2020 the team that ill head to London in 2012 ont be ready I just watched nationals and the girls are horrile except for Mattie Larson she has it!

  • @SexyLiLLeilaniMya after watching the 2010 worlds do you care to define "it"?

  • @all4uanew LMAO She was off at Worlds but she is the best on the floor in the US and she will be put together really soon!

  • @SexyLiLLeilaniMya Really? well maybe you should watch this last nationals, the USA won by a LANDSLIDE.

  • How is it, Bela has been in America for at LEAST 25 years, yet he still has such an uber thick accent?!? hahaha.

  • @Mikizzle15 Because he spends his time coaching gymnastics, not trying to be an actor with a voice coach, that;s why.

  • Haha I love Nadia's part at the beginning.

  • Little Moceanu was BORN in Hollywood, but they didn't live there for long. She was in Illinois by at LEAST 3 1/2, in time to get strung up by a clothesline in the kitchen.

  • why would they show a romanian team when they are talking about the soviet union

  • For some reason Nadia seems to annoy me so much. She talks bad about USA girls, then immigrates over here. arrogant.

  • She wasn't talking bad about USA. She was being realistic. I'm an American and I didn't take offense to her comments. The USA had never really garnered that much attention in the sport because lets face it, the USA really wasn't that hard to beat. And Romania has a very strict government, maybe that's why she came to America. Plus, she's married to Bart Connor.

  • @iloveyourstory the only american person who had yet broken through the ranks at that time was cathy rigby

that sounds like a force to be reckoned with.

    NOT!

  • i dun understand why do gymnastics team need a captain..? its basically u performing ur own routine.. unlike soccer where there is some sort of coordination involved among players..

  • The team captain's role is more of a supportive one, rather than based on individual performances. Whoever is selected is usually one of the older, more experienced girls on the team, so she has been in high-pressure situations before and can help the younger ones through it. Alicia Sacramone was the captain of the 2008 team, as she had been through the 2004 selection process, been at every Worlds that quad, etc., versus someone like Shawn Johnson, who had "only" been to one World Championships.

  • @doublelayout10 seniority is not always the case when choosing a captain...Amanda Borden was chosen the captain of the 1996 team and Dominique Dawes, shannon miller and kerry strug all had so much more international and national experience than amanda did

  • @ginoseast123 You're right, it's not always the case. More often than not, however, the team captain is someone who has "been there before." Amanda competed in 3 World Championships, so she definitely knew what international competitions were all about. While MIller, Dawes and Strug had more SUCCESS than Borden, they also had more pressure to perform well individually in Atlanta. I'd say Amanda was chosen because of her experience and support, but also because her main focus was the team.

  • @doublelayout10 I just saw an interview the other day (maybe it was even in this documentary! I don't recall!) where Amanda was saying that the other girls voted her to be the captain and she was amazed and shocked and honored. All seven of them put the name of the person they wanted to be captain in a hat or something, and she chose someone else, but all six of the others chose her.

  • 2:50 wow!!!

  • @TheDiamond123123 If you think about it, women are better than guys. Guys bodies are meant for the strength it takes. Women have to work that much harder to get their bodies to be just as strong. But the biggest difference between men's and women's gymnastics is what kind of strength it takes. Men's takes more upper body and women's more lower body. That's why the women tend to have stronger legs than the guys do.

  • I've seen a 40+ year compete in gymnastics they put her in the vault she did extremely well.

  • What are you talking about, flippinman2008? Of course it's not.

  • I thought Nadia scored the first olympic ten, but someone else the real first perfect ten

  • who is that girl @ 0:10?

  • Nadia Comaneci

  • omg, it is her, such a different look

  • wow, she changed quite a bit

  • Yes your right, thanks to a visit to her local PS......by the looks of it anyway!

  • :O it's just the fist girl who win 4 gold a the montreal olympic in 1976 whit the perfect score of 10 at all of even :O

    nadia are a legend!! ;)

  • i tot nadia only got 3 gold..? all-around, beam, and uneven bars..? nelly kim got the other 3 if i m not wrong.. and actually nadia is not the ONLY gymnast who got a perfect 10 at the montral olympics.. nelly kim also had perfect 10s..

  • @Swankdor She was the first.

  • i know.. i m just pointing out a fact that she is not the only one who got perfect scores at that olympics..

  • @Swankdor - and its debatable believe it or not if all of Nadias 7 perfect scores really were perfect....I think the judges got carried away personally on a cpl of them!

  • Thanks soooooo much for posting!! :D

  • holy crap pause at 2.51!

    her legs are MUSCULAR!!

  • Amanda had some SERIOUS legs. That photo is in Google image search.

  • no joke! wow!

  • Wow pause at 2:03, Shannon was HOT!

  • We will probably never know the whole story of what went on behind the scenes on this team. There was friction, but the media made them seem like a team. Which is fine - I'm glad they won, all things considered, but they were not a unified, solidified team, aside from Jaycie and Amanda.

  • Is MLR attempting a free hip circle @ the beginning...looks nasty like she bit into her lip when she crashes onto the mat!

  • Comment removed

  • does anyone know how old they were during the 1996 olympics ?

  • Amanda Borden, Dominique Dawes, and Shannon Miller were 19, Amy Chow and Kerri Strug were 18, Jaycie Phelps was 16, and Dominique Moceanu was 14.

  • the footage of marylou on the bars, is that a documentry? is this anywhere on youtube?

    thanks

    - comet

  • LOL at Bela Karolyi going on about "beautiful graceful movements" ....funny...none of his prodigys have displayed this to my memory??

  • What about Nadia Comaneci, Bela's first prodigy?

  • yes your right, but I suppose I didnt make it clear....I was talking about his gymnasts he coached after he defected to the US.........though even Nadia on floor was not as graceful or balletically trained as the soviets I think(Bela's corny choice of dance and music for Nadia in 76 can almost be matched to DM here in 96' I think)

  • Lol Looking at your comments on here I think we're gonna get on just great... be prepared for thousands of thumbs down....YOU WILL NOT CRITICISE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, I WIILL PHONE THE PO-LEESE.... lol...

  • lol thx - the thumbs down dont bother me - it was more a pointing out the lunacy of bela Karolyi's comment....grace....would he now it if it hit him in the face?.....as it happens I think other nations today field far less graceful gymnasts too....but for me watching the female gymnasts (im afraid mainly from the US) do a quick porno star like gyration in the corner and call it artistic and dancing....PO-LEEEESE lol

  • What about Betty Okino? She was very gracefull.

  • Im not hugely familiar with her however if you say she was I think this was not run of the mill for Karolyi......she was quite tall wasnt she aswell which Is why I suppose she was not moulded into one of his usual champions????

  • actually impressed one of the eastern block judges who usually voted against Karoly's gymnast (according to his book) with her grace over power. I think Julieann mcnamera was also trained by Bela. If you dont remeber her she is atleast a double medalist at the 84 olympics who i believe is kinda overshawdowed by Mary Lou.

  • I have watched some of her performances and your right, she was more in line with the Europeans....she was taller though asuppose to the other girls who lets face it were not....i'd like to clarify im not against American gymnasts....however i have to say Kerri Strugs form on her dismounts (comp) on bars and beam were wretched! and today the floor routines fielded by women is non existent....I mean MLR is another Karolyi gymnast but at least she did 'dance' in 84!!!

  • I see what you are saying too. However I loved watching Keri on floor and vault. i do consider some Europeans as my favorites such as boganskia and galava. One gynmast people say is gracefull but for some reason, I dont see it is Khorkina.

  • She was tall which gave the elusion of grace....she was a bit too 'arms and hands' in my own opinion....I appreciate it differs from others, she also looked like a good square meal wouldnt have gone a miss by the latter stages of her career....I found her beam returns in the end to be way too 'stop starty' and very fluent....she was too tall and thin in the end for the beam to do her justice...watch her athens perfomo.......its one element, pause, another element, pause etc etc??? gr8 dismount tho!

  • Thank you for posting this:)

  • I love how evil they make Bela look at 9:25 XD

    Talk about sensationalism.

  • what does CCCP stand for?

  • Central Committee of the Communist Party. The soviets used this abreviation to describe their government.

  • it's Cyrillic which is the writing system for most slavic countries, C=S and P=R, so basically... Союз Советских Социалистических Республик¹

    Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik¹

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR, it just a different alphabet

  • the team was amazing i have always loved the team they are the only gold team in U.S.A womans gymnastics.please come to my site;love Ilovelucy54

  • on bars he says the thing about 10 movements..whats that about?

  • Bar routines are made up of 10 elements.

  • i thout the ruels wear 6 on the teame.o and just becus i am sooo excited i wanted to tell youtube that i am getting a karry strug leo

  • Those were the rules in'96. They've changed since then.

  • starting with the 2000 olympics they reduced the number of gymnasts in artistic to make way for trampolining

  • Amanda Borden was the team captain? Why not Shannon Miller? Do 5 Olympic medals mean nothing to Bela Karolyi?

  • OK, I've just watched the rest of the documentary; it was the girls who picked up the team captain!

    Silly me ;-D

  • it wasn't his decision, Bela left the choosing of the team captain to the girls, they picked Amanda in a 5 to 6 unanimous vote because she was the oldest on the team and because she got screwed in the 92 olympics....

  • yeah, from what i heard they picked Amanda because she was the oldest and they also wanted to honor her shut out of the 1992 games. But eventhough Amanda was the team captain (duties: motivation, and attend preliminary competitions), Shannon was the leader of the team.

  • @ I thought they picked Amanda b/c of a combination of maturity (age) & b/c she had the best personality for leadership. Amanda's outgoing & spirited - & can vocally put the girls at ease - whereas Miller was a lot more shy & introverted, Dawes too "nervous" & unsteady, & Strug too shy & self-absorbed. Shannon might have been a leader of the team in terms of her gymnastics, but she didn't have the personality to relax & vocally guide her teammates.

  • It was definitely because she was a great leader. Because if they had chosen the captain based on the oldest, Dominique Dawes would have been the captain, because she's the oldest member of the team. She's one year older than Amanda and Shannon. She turned 20 right after the olympics, her birthday is in November and the Olympics was in the summer.

  • I didn't mean to imply that Amanda was the oldest....I know she isn't...but I think her being generally "of age" may have played a role in her getting elected captain. It would have been unlikely that Moceanu or Phelps (the two youngest) got elected team captain, b/c of relative immaturity & lack of "seasoning".

Dawes is not really a full year older than Miller or Borden. Dawes was born in Nov. 1976, Miller born in March 1977, & Borden May 1977.

  • I know. I wasn't downing you. I was just saying, that the whole age thing wasn't as big a factor as her maturity level. Even though Dominique D. was the oldest and had her own apartment, she was very insecure with herself. I was basically agreeing with you, just putting in another fact. lol.

  • P.S. - and while we're doing birthdays, Dawes *is* almost exactly a full year older than Kerri Strug - w/ Dawes being born Nov. 20, 1976 & Strug being born Nov. 19, 1977. (I remember how they had a joint birthday party at the 1994 Team World Championships.) Borden is about a full year older than Amy Chow, who was born in May of 1978.

  • Yeah. I remember that. Dominique and Kerri were sittin at the table and Dominique turned 18, and got a teddy bear. lol.

  • @svetaswan I couldn't have put it better. I totally agree with you. Amanda was the best as captain.

  • Amanda deserved it, she was scewed over in 1992. And her optionals beam routine knocked it out of the park.

  • This team was amazing. I hope the next American team to earn golden honors is as good and on par with the 1996 team. The 2008 squad was not in my opinion. A gold for them would have taken away from the magic skill and overall ability all 7 members of the team had in 1996! Please don't think I wanted the 2008 team to lose, this is just my current thoughts now that it is all over.

  • Could you really say that Dominique Moceanu was from Hollywood? I know she was born there, but I'm not sure how long her family lived there afterwards?

  • I think they only lived there for about a year after she was born. It wasn't very long at all.

  • phepls? is she the sister of micheal phepls?

  • No, she is not.

  • who was the one that did the memorable backflip on balance beam, olga...?

  • Nobody other. :)

  • olga korbut

  • This was the dream team. I remember when I was younger, I wished to be like Dominique Dawes, she was great.

  • @diamepiece I had two different posters of Moceanu.. and a biography about her. lol.. I was lucky enough to be at the Atlanta games (8 years old!) when they took the gold. I still talk about it! (Obviously!) They were my heroes for the longest time!

  • Does anyone hate the title of this documentary? It sounds like they would lie, cheat, steal, and kill to win!

  • Shannon Miller rules

  • Is it me or does Shannon Miller look dif. That is her at the first part?? I didn't recognize her.

  • yes she does!! i thought i was the only one...it looks like she had a nose job..all the others still retained their features so you could recognize them.

  • yep, shannon had plastic surgery.

  • Nice job to the editor for showing a picture of the 1984 Romanian Olympic team when they are discussing the history of the Soviet Union team!

  • Anyone know who that girl is at 5:27?

  • Svetlana Boguinskaya ('88, '92, '96 Olympian from Belarus)

  • Thanks doublelayout10

  • How come he looks asian and half you know what?

  • omg that girls legs at 2:51

  • that was amanda borden

  • Thank you so much for sharing this!! I had never seen this documentary before-I like Nadia's attitude. She's a tiger-that's why she became Olympic Champion and the first gymnast to score 10.00's at the Games.

  • dawes is gorgeous! so is the otehr dominique...

  • Quite a feat to beat the might of the Russians, Chinese, Romanians etc.

  • whats the name of that trainer in the beguinning? The big man? saying "i know you can do it!"

  • thats bela karolyi (sp?), the coach of the team and half of the gymnastic coaching dynasty team, with his wife Marta.

  • you got the spelling of his name correct.

  • Bela Karolyi-he coached Nadia Comaneci to Olympic gold in 1976 (along with his wife Marta), as well as others that he coached to Olympic medals like Mary Lou Retton, Kim Zmeskal, Dominique Moceanu, etc.

  • love this

  • love this documentary!

  • I actually prefered Shannon's nose before.. but that's just my opinion. If she likes it, that's all that matters.

  • Hmmm...why would this air on game show network? lol

  • now nadia looks fake not the same!

  • yeah... her lips seem rather PLUMP

  • yeah i know! and she doesn't seem like the same nadia that won gold!

  • God, Shannon looks SCARY!

  • shannon looks gorgeous, lol. i dont know why people are all up at arms about her looks (plastic surgery and all)

  • Well, if you think looking fake and that your face will melt if it gets too close to an open flame is gorgeous, more power to you, I think it's gross. Shannon was much prettier normal.

  • Well whatever Nadia's doing, she still looks 10+ on my scoring sheet.

  • Interesting how they list Hollywood as Moceanu's hometown. Tampa, FL would probably be closer to her hometown, if not Houston by that time.

  • I think they were strickly going by where they were born, not where they spent most of their lives.

  • i bet this team soon wont be the only US team to have won olympic gold. because i think the US will win this summer.

  • i think so too

  • I am not so sure actually....you may be surprised...it SURELY won't be as uch of an upset like it was here.

  • i dont think that shannon looks bad @ all

    geez.u guys are harsh

  • don't take it personally.. it's just that her face job is awful.

  • who?

  • Shannon Miller

  • shannon looks horrible. she was so much prettier when she was younger. she looks old now.

  • She grew up dumbass. Go look at your baby pics and see if you look exactly the same now.

  • i repeat. she looks horrible now. :)

  • you need to not take it personally :)

  • Is tht Chusovitina at 7:04?

  • No, that would be Nadia. She had short hair in 1979 and 1980.

  • 6:13...WTF is up with her LEO? The dots or floer or whatever it is conveniently right over he...well anyway...lol ok continue watchin people :)

  • Woah Nadia! Botox much?

  • great documentary....

and look at that keri strug...she still have that helium voice

  • greatest moment in sports history besides the 1980 us olympic hockey team win in lake placid

  • To me the greatest moment in sports history was Nadia's perfection at Montreal in the 1976Olympics as far as gymnastics is concerned. Olga Korbut would be up there too, and other athletes in other sports were pretty great too-like Mark Spitz Golden Sweep in 1972, and Eric Heiden's own Golden Sweep in Speedskating.

  • omg @ nadia's lips

  • what was this shown on? when was it shown??? thanks so much for posting it!

  • This was aired on GSN last summer.

  • more please!!! :)
