what about the dead pet budgie on the plate.......remember the movie very, very well.I was a kid,& it left a lasting impression...Does anyone remember a movie called THE DOLL....creepiest doll ever with those awful scary teeth....old b/w...killer doll...
Marvellous scene. I savor this every time I see "Baby Jane." I keep Jane's little gambit in mind as a ploy I might borrow for some especially disliked person under the proper circumstances.
It just occured to me you could never do a remake set in modern times. Blanche would have a mobile, and would have a stairlift to get down the stairs and would opt for a ground floor bedroom anyway.
Great movie tho! So over the top! Very camp. Davis acts circles around Crawford though.
I have watched this clip 4 times, and nearly choked laughing!!!! Just listening to Baby Jane's maniacal cackling leaves me in stitches! Why can't they make classics like this anymore? This movie is so damned FUNNY!
Rob Zombie said one time, referring to Bette Davis, that this was one of his favorite horror movie scenes ever!
BTW, Blanch brought this all on herself. turns out she is really the nasty , lying evil one! just in a passive/aggressive way! some of you people need to watch the entire movie instead of just little clips on YouTube!
@Nightman221k It's called desperation. Can you imagine, being unable to get out of the house and your only caretaker is a psychotic bent on terrorizing you? Also @ deadlycamera, sure Jane made a terrible mistake out of spite, but don't you think she's paying for it now?
@LethalLaurie Yeah I realize that my earlier post was dumb. Truthfully the first time I ever watched WHtoBJ I felt sorry for Blanche. However, after seeing that she brought this upon herself when she made ruining Jane her goal, I didn't feel sympathetic to her. I think Blanche only stayed in the house so long only to hurt Jane but in doing so she got an taste of her own medicine. I still think that rolling around in the chair wasn't necessary.
This scene is essentional for whole movie and Jane's character. You can't help but laugh with her. However, Blanche's breakdown shakes you and remainds about how terrible Jane is. And now you're torn because you sympathize with a villain.
In this black-and-white movie nothing is really black or white.
@chelseaguy52 As I said in a previous post about this scene...Jane was very courteous to put the rat on a nice garnish of tomatoes. After all, presentation is very important.
Oh PU-LEEEZE - Monroe and Taylor doing this movie!!! Let's just think about that one for a moment - sheesh!! That is about as believable as saying the Bette Davis was MGM's first choice to play Dorothy in The Wizard of OZ --- or even better yet, as Glinda the Good Witch. Warner Bro's was looking for a vehicle to pair these 2 broads and "Jane" came to their attention, plain and simple. Hush-Hush Sweet Charlotte was to be the 2nd pairing but Crawford took ill and was replaced by de Havilland
It is said that had they made it with Marilyn & Elizabeth it could have either been the most famous movie to date or could of been the biggest failure movie known to date. Pairing the most famous woman of all time, with the most beautiful of all time??
This movie is soooo good. Despite its campy undertones, the acting is actually quite solid. Bette in particular makes a spectacular villain. Really no one else who could've played that role half as well.
I saw the movie as a child and just rented again from Netflix. It had a special version with filmmaker commentary (young guys, not the originals of course) that was quite funny and interesting as well.
I've never heard this one! I doubt very much that this rumor was true, it seems too unplausible. Monroe's biographers don't mention it, and the story of how Joan Crawford brought the script to the attention of Davis is well known. I think it was always meant to be done with them in it.
becuase i cannot even see the two of them doing this
i said i could maybe see elizabeth as blanche(wait, or maybe jane) but those two really wouldnt be right for this ,and marilyn as jane? are you kidding me,no disrespect to her but this was way to deep a role for her to play
apparently Joan Crawford was Bi Sexual. becuase apparntly when Marilyn Monroe was Strugglin in the begining of her careera and did not have much clothes, joan crawford offerd her clothes and made a pass on her! lol
I wonder if that old vintage Spainsh-style mansion (mission style archetechure) is still standing? I read it was in the Wilshire district, which is in old Hollywood. Does anyone know?
yes- it is in the Hancock Park area of L.A. at 127 S. McCadden. you can google it. all the exterior scenes were shot at this location. the architectural style is mediterranean villa.
@rrmond wow! you're right! I never saw it before..was just thinking..that face looks so familiar! now I know from where! and Bette looks like Cesar Romero as the Joker from Batman!!
That laugh is so evil! I love Bette Davis :D

Epic, classic film with 2 solid actresses with perfect acting. What more could you want in a film?

I found the dead bird scene more powerful, but it was structurally necessary to continue in a manner like this. Jane, you monster.

Seriously why'd she do that?

This movie was ment to be Marilyn Monroe & Elizabeth Taylor movie but Elizabeth turned it down for "Cleopatra" and Marilyn died in 1962.
So they decided to pair another 2 hollywood legends instead.
