When I open a ballet studio, I want to partner with a choir school and maybe an orchestra school and do Messiah for a Christmas recital for all of us one year.
doing this for Christmas this year in choir the whole Messiah!!! learned it in 2 months, well not every song but pretty close :P and i'm saprono so i have to sing all the HIGHEST notes!!!! :P so hard
Amazing piece. No one else, not even Mozart, wrote something as powerful and grand as this. King of kings indeed! No wonder, at the end of his life, Beethoven explained "Handel is the king of us all."
This isn't about Jesus' birth or resurrection, people. It's about His second coming. You know, the one with all the fire and pestilence and famine and war and destruction.
"The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ. And He shall reign forever and ever. King of kings, and lord of lords."
@morphthing1 He is referring to the "And he shall reign" after 2:50 It surprised me to, I'm pretty sure, that I'm used to hear another "And lord of lords" there.
@morphthing12:50 I always sing King of kings, and Lord of lords as tenor. But in this arrangement, it's not "and Lord of lords", but "and He shall reign"...
@morphthing1 yeah, i think they're right! interesting to hear "King of Kings" without the "Lord of Lords" ! great recording, just the same! thanks for uploading. you always have the best stuff!!!
@morphthing1 At 2:53 , "And he shall reign" is usually "And lord of lords". Since there are no definite version of Messiah, I guess there are no correct version, but the latter is what's usually heard, I must agree with ComposerJMA. It's also pretty weird that Handel would've split two phrases and put them together.
@morphthing1 At 2:53 , "And he shall reign" is usually "And lord of lords"; the repeat afterwards says it correctly. Since there are no definite versions of Messiah, I guess there is no correct version, but the latter is what's usually heard, I must agree with ComposerJMA. It's also pretty weird that Handel would've split two phrases and put them together.
I think he is referring to the time starting at 2:50. Usually it's "King of kings.....and Lord of lords," instead of "King of kings, and he shall reign." This happens more than once later.
@ComposerJMA true, at exactlly 2:48 the men say "King of kings", but they don't respond with "and lord of lords" like the lyrics go.... they just say "and he shall reign" on the D. Weird, I've heard several versions of the hallelujah and this is the first time I've heard that.
@ComposerJMA: You are correct. At 2:52 this arrangement has ''and He shall reign'' whereas the standard arrangement has ''and Lord of Lords.'' I've never heard it this way before; I have no idea what the story is on this.
@ComposerJMA I did on my cd. sometimes they don't always play the full song or version. maybe it is a diff. hallelujah, there was one made by Bach and Mozarts
@ComposerJMA I know right? The first time I heard this version once through, I was just like "......wait what. 'King of kings, and he shall reign'? That's not right :("
@ContinualCreativity The lyrics are not "King of kings, and he shall reign". They are "King of Kings and Lord of Lords". I have a direct copy of the original program from the initial performance of the work to back me up on this claim.
I think it is the simplicity of this music that makes it one of the best composisions ever and puts Handel alongside the other great classical composers
@whycryforher Well if there was to repetition of phrases I am fairly sure the Messiah would be a 30 minute piece! Some how doubt it would have quite the same impact if instead we just sang Hallelujah once and that was it.
We are doing this for Christmas at church this year. I never thought I could learn it but I have and I loooove it!!! Thanks to sites like this I was able to join the choir late and catch up and perfect my alto part. Thank you. Long live Handel's Messiah! The best piece he ever wrote.
I love this song! The Virginia Consort does it almost every other year, and I have steadily descended from a soprano when I was about eight, to alto when I was ten, tenor when I was twelve, and now bass when I'm just recently turned thirteen (we did it two years in a row), so I know all the parts well. It's REALLY fun to sing.
our school choir sings this every other year for the holiday concert :) and my choir director gave us the link to this video because it has the score in it! :D Very convenient, don't have to turn my own pages :P Thank you!
@Jellybean1614 us too! :) just last week. this song was pretty awesome. we tend to sing it way way way too fast most days so i'm glad it turned out ok c:
This song popped in my head when I read my acceptance letter just now!!!!!!

@TheActualAstrid Speaking as a soprano, I know it's a high piece. But A's should be nothing for most sopranos. A's for tenors are much harder.
