karate guys who're jumping are idiots. I also do karate on a high level. And I just had a fight against a guy who jumped around like a monkey (like the guys in the vid.)
After 30 seconds I knew how he's jumping and I swept him to the floor and finished him. That's so retarded! Stop jumping aroud dudes!
@8izzi8 That's what point match sport karate is about... sigh just like taekwondo. they jump around to improve mobility and be able to have bounce to get ready to do kicks but it becomes easy to knock down. point competition is not my cup of tea, knockdown is way more exciting :D
The best japanese karate players don't compete under wkf. They compete in japanese federations. Even if they were beaten by Pinna than it must have happend under the shitty wkf rules wich don't allow real combat. Was it a real street fight Pinna would have got his ass kicked in no time. Like i said before, wkf techniques are only fast. No technique, no power.
Unfortunately, point sport karate can place such a premium on speed that it loses substantial power (though it need not be so; watch some of Legend's footage from old KUGB shotokan tournaments). What goes on in your mind is important. Are you trying to score a point, or deliver a blow that will preserve your life in need be? Such a mindset pared with control of one's technique makes a significant difference, but remains safe as a way to train. Sport is just a training aid, not an end in itself
They are fast, and some of the sport fighting clips are decent. Sport martial arts at least have the claim that they train with an element of unpredictability, so you can't call all their training bull.
However, this is point fighting, one of the worst inovations of the martial community. If you're going to fight sport, make it knockdown w/rules. Points completely distort the fighting process and make for poor fighters.
I think, considering the sport aspect, the point is not to kill your opponent (I mean knock him out), though of course you can, but rather, the point system is significant to place more emphasis on strategy - that makes the sport. Strategizing, thinking, and technique.
That's just my opinion though, I like your idea too, I just suppose this is somewhat of a justification to the point system, from my eyes at least.
I see where you're coming from, it's just that I don't like the idea of the skirmish ending as soon as someone connects.
Boxing has points as well, so does MMA and Muay Thai, it's just that they also have knock downs and knock outs.
There are types of Karate (Daidojuku, Kyokushin, Enshin) that have knock downs and go more full contact while preserving the point system. I don't think that the presence of knock downs or knock outs necessarilly eliminates strategy either. Just my opinion.
Ah yes, good point, yeah I train Taekwondo and we have point system, but yeah I didn't watch the above video which was stupid before I commented. I agree, I don't like how they stop the fight after a point is scored, they don't do that in Taekwondo either. Points are awarded as the match goes for a specified timeframe, so I agree with you.
This shows how martial artists can unite. You see, although I'm not that into Tae Kwon Do, I can totally agree with you on this. Despite some of the personal problems I have with TKD's rule style, as far as I know, TKD tournaments do involve knockdowns as well as knockouts. In TKD you don't stop as soon as a point is scored, unlike Shotokan.
One of the best threads I've seen on YouTube. Well delivered points. This is how a discussion should work and it didn't end in....MMA would kick their ass :)
for those of us who do sport karate as well as normal training, this was very well done. good to see them being used in competition as well as the demonstrations. je comprends seulement un peu de francais, mais les demonstrations sont clair. merci!
That's a load of horse crap. Funakoshi never intended his art as a sport and he, in fact, warned against that very thing. This video is sport and very bad technique. "Let's dance back and forth so I can set a pattern and kick you." Nonsense!!!!!!
ExactibleParasite just ignore these dumbasses, cuz all they can do if open their big stink mouths and do nothing to back up their shit!AnotherGlenn and chuckmickey001 are just ignorant dumbasses.
according my years old trainning in Karate and Tae Kwon Do, This guy has very good timing and speed, so why don't you just shut your big mouth and try fighting with a real karate black belt and see if you can whip his ass???
of course he is not punching and kicking a full strength you asshole, because he is just practising with his partner dumbass, if he wanted to strike with full force at a dumbass like you I sure he would!!
You know what's realistic? Shooting someone down or stabbing him with a knife. Please stop talking bullshit and expose yourself to a couple of years of good martial arts training. Maybe you'll start understanding things then.
this is crazy shit!

It's the sport aspect of the martial art.
Not my cup of tea, but still you have to give them respect.
Martial arts can have 4 major focuses IMO:
-Sports/competition.
-Self-defense/combat.
-Spirituality/personal growth.
-Physical art/dance.
They are all equal as far as benefits are concerned, but have totally different focuses.
Don't mix them up.
Choose your focus, and perfect it. Rarely can you become good at more than 1.

I totaly agree! The only real karate is the one with strong japanese roots like JKA, KWF, JKS etc.
What we can see here is merely an imitation of real techniques. Sad but true.
