DFDalton1962 Hi! Thank you for your message. Okay, it was long ago, that I've seen both musicals. But it's nice that so great musical freak like you. And you do not die stupid does. I would love to hear from you? I also like musicals, but not only. So thanks again and maybe see you soon. bmatcan PS. Mine is pretty bad, so I had to write to you with the Google translator.
@bmatcan No it's definitely from "Singin' in the Rain". But your mistake is understandable for two reasons. First, many people believe this ballet was shoehorned into SITR and does not in anyway fit the rest of the story. Second, this ballet was added as a direct result of the critical success of "An American in Paris", released only a few months prior. (It *was* actually shoehorned into the movie with little justification.) So it was obviously was heavily influenced by the ballet in AAIP.
I've never liked this scene, other than to see the luscious Ms. Charisse; I feel it an intrusive piece of narcissistic clap-trap that just interrupts the whole film.
I watched this for the first time ...... I just can't get over how you can express so much sex without being .... well ..... explcit. I'm astonished not so much by the wonderful artistry of the two dancers but by what's been acheived in the space of only a few minutes. When did we lose the ability to do this. The 60's?
The woman had singularly gorgeous stems...'nuff said. I had the good fortune to see this in a theatre in my college days (about 25 years ago), and the moment at 2:08 when Kelly pulls Cyd up and into his arms, there was a clear rush of howls, screams, and applause coming from the 20-30 year old audience responding to the hotness of the moment. Thank God some things are timeless.
Absolutely wonderful together and equally good oh, that that same wholesome showmanship would return to the screen; what a wonderful world this would be!
My dad loved Cid, she was a beautiful woman and had million $ legs, could she dance, wow!
@GeneralG1810 Excuse me? Not all women can have long legs and saying we are all trying to be skinny is just sexist. Even the ones who are you should feel sorry for. That is what the beauty industry does.
@MissQuattrone Im just saying that women have gone being naturally curvy (That is boobs and bums its natural for a woman to have these) to trying to get excessively thin e.g. models. I dont feel sorry for ppl who let a bunch of gay men dictate what they should look like, and get of your pedastool its natural for men to find curves attractive like its natural for women to find muscles attractive. @GeneralG1810 Women ARE naturally curvy, which has nothing to do with long legs might I add.
Those women are trying to be thin because the beauty industry tells them to. Every day we are bombarded with sexist advertisements telling us that if we don't look like this we are unattractive and here you are sayiing if we do look like this we are unattractive. I think it shouldn't matter. We are human beings and nobody should try to dictate how we look. BTW Everyone finds different things attractive.
@MissQuattrone Well your obviously a fat sexist femanazzi who thinks all men are shit and theyre not allowed to find attractive qualities in the fairer sex, I made 1 comment about Cyd Charise and you jump down my throat about how sexist I am, insecure much. Yeah I like to look at women and find different qualities about them appealing but sorry I cant spot a personality from accros the room, so get off your cross someone else needs the wood. @MissQuattrone I hate to tell you but tis perfectly natural for men to find women attractive its not my fault if they dont find you attractive, and look at the models and actresses theyre freekishly thin thats not the fault of straight men its the WOMENS mags that put that image out there. If you ask straight guys were more into women like Salma Heyek and Monicca Belucci Dont blame men for what women have let magazines do to them blame yourselves
Ms. Charisse was sexy and sultry without being offensive, like some of the trash that we are subjected to now and days. I only in my 40's and I am appalled at some of it.
@ihavekankles I beg to differ, I have a 14yr old son, I am trying to instill in my son respect for girls, yet sometimes it's difficult to do so, when his female peers are dressing like hookers and have no sense of self respect. I also work for an ob/gyn and the high rate of teenage girls who get pregnant and then their mothers become parents instead of grandparents, because these girls don't have any sense of responsibilty! As a parent, I won't get the F**K over it!
You're trying to instil a sense of respect for girls in your son? Why? All your son needs to know is that he is to respect everybody, girls are nothing special. And why are you judging girls who you perceive to be "dressed like hookers", is it not their choice? The fact you are judging them this way is proof that you don't respect girls either.
@ihavekankles He does respect everybody but is essential that he be treat and be respectful of girls. If I am being judgemental than so be it, a girl who is respectful of herself is not going to dress like that. I also have a 17 yr old daughter who has never had to dress like that to know that she's beautiful. It may their choice, if my son were to bring a girl home like that, she certainly would not be welcomed, and I certainly would question his choices, no I don't respect girls like that.
@ihavekankles Oh by the way, I am not going to get into a huge discussion with someone I don't know over a public forum, you have your opinions and I have mine, let's leave it at that.
@otasnake He's offended by what he sees nowadays because he's a prude? No, he's offended because he has taste and good judgment. This is great stuff. I saw this in the theaters when I was a kid. All you had to do back then was suggest sex the way they did here and it worked. You didn't have to have it shoved in your face the way you see it all around you now. All you have to do is wrap it up right, the way the way they did here. If you don't know what I mean by that, I feel sorry fir you.
@anghmho, please don't act like a snob because you are actually more of a dumbass. if you think you are the authority of what is good and what is not, you are wrong. and i can tell by your comment that you are a very old individual.
@otasnake Sorry if I offended you. I was just trying to say what it was like watching this movie back when. I don't think I'm a dumb ass and, actually, I'm not a snob. I don't think that I'm the arbiter of good taste. That WOULD make me a snob. But you're right about my being old. I wonder, though, what you think is wrong about that. If you're lucky, you will be old someday, too. Until you get there, please try to be kind. Life is so much better that way. I know this from life-long experience.
@sayhitoyourmom I love how she's always sort of crouched down so she doesn't tower over Gene Kelly so conspicuously. One of her legs is as long as his entire body.
@sayhitoyourmom - you said it! This dance with Gene showcases the true strengths and athleticism of both dancers without endless pelvic thrusting, shoving of buttocks into our faces with putrid and simulated sex as the 'dancers' of today insist on. For sheer talent, and gifted choreography - you can't beat Cyd and Gene. His strength when she leaps into his arms is priceless. He doesn't BUDGE, and Cyd was a tall, long drink of Water! Those were the days.......
@MsJollycholly Actually, Cyd Charisse wasn't as tall as she appeared to be. In actuality, she was only about 5'3"" or thereabouts. But what a babe, what a professional, and what a lady.
Gene Kelly dances great even when he keeps getting a wedgie. Cyd Charisse still has the best looking legs anyone's ever flashed on the screen. If this were done today it would be in 2 second fragments and require no dancing at all.
I think the coin flipping just goes with the idea of how people viewed money and welthy in the 20's (think of the Great Gatsby) actually, I thought of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald when I saw them dance here, and with how Cyd was posessed by money, much how Zelda wouldn't marry scott until he had more money.
But I love the colors in this, and if you pause at :42-:44 ish, all the colors together with that cloud of smoke, great still moment. although i've never seen the whole thing :/
@anUHkins Oh, Christ, give me a break... The art of retrospective over-analysis is the curse of the 20th Century. The coin fipping is a parody of George Raft in 'Scarface' - he flips a coin throughout the film and it also explains the scar on the hood's face here. The entire number is an homage to styles and stars of the 20s: Cyd Charisse as vamp in the manner of Louise Brooks and Gene Kelly as a geek in the mould of Harold Lloyd. Believe me, there is no social commentary going on here.
@ErchieMcGeakle the '20's in general were a corrupt time for people with easy money, i could easily see how it relfects the lifes of scott and zelda. to each their own.
i absolutely adore this musical, but i have a question about this scene, to be honest: i'm not really understanding what's up with the men flipping a coin in their hands. is it supposed to be symbolic of something?
@viva7italia7bella Sure, it's made to remain Scarface (Howard Hawks, 1932), a film of mafia, where George Raft does it all the time. That's also taken up in Some like it hot (1959, with Marilyn...)
Sorry for my English, I'm French... hope I've been some help !
Very sexual/sensual. These are two very strong/leggy dancers. No polite stuff here. Cyd is out of this world and Gene is not too shabby himself. My Mom had a 'thing' for him.
what a whore she goes back to the other guy because he shows her that necklace. The other guy reminds her what she wants, MONEY. All girl are like that.
The problem is that we all want bigger and better when "style" is innate. Anyone can learn a trick but style is from within. The problem is we encourage the tricks and don't talent......These guys had style. Gene Kelly, Donald O'connor, Cyd Charisse (she had legs to jesus....) and Ann Renking (spelling?) (she's me hero...)These are TRUE dancers....I'm not dissing the current talent it's just that we dont help our current dancers with their style, just tricks.....
@stacykd123 that's very true. Actually, that can be applied to the entire era we're living in, especially mainstream america. Everyone is focused on tricks, visuals and sex, and all other exterior actions and concepts. But none of them have style because like you said, it comes from within. It's like they have a hollow interior.
@chilvari you loose your self talking about the within! Feed in man the within is only ok when you accept yourself! It is not not only peoples blame for focusing on the looks. And jsut because people are beautifull and glamorous and confident doesnt mean they empty and vain.
I call that talk of sheet lack of confidence in yourself, always winning (people cant see me because I'm ugly) Take pitty on yourself and die orelse just show yourselves to world with all your might
@mstrmilhanos I barely read your comment and already I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. I think you're responding to the wrong person. Besides, I don't have time for such uncomprehendable nonsense.
I was raised a dancer.... That said, It's been a long time....I'm now 46....anyway....the thing these guys (and gals) got is style. The new kids can do all of the tricks. God knows, i couldn't do them. But what the new generation lacks is style. They can all do back flips and this and that, but they aint got style.....they could stand to take a step back and learn alittle. Look and these guys~they are soooo smooth...that's what it's al about...
this whole dance number just screams Sex! Just goes to show you can have a sexual scene without getting naked. Although it really seems like they want to. It is a brilliant number from Singing in the Rain
That is one long-leggedy beastie.

They were great together. Of couse Kelly was actually somewhat short....notice in the last shot how much taller than Charisse he suddenly becomes.

That lucky, lucky woman....whew, what I'd do to dance with Gene like that...to dance with Gene period
5poundsofcrazy 10 months ago 2
@5poundsofcrazy Lucky, lucky Gene-I'd do just about anything to have danced with Cyd Charisse!
davewvu1 9 months ago 2
I'll just phrase what this scene is in the appropriate 20's vernacular.
"That dame's got gams up to her eyeballs."
sayhitoyourmom 10 months ago 66

MsJollycholly 8 months ago 3
@MsJollycholly Actually, Cyd Charisse wasn't as tall as she appeared to be. In actuality, she was only about 5'3"" or thereabouts. But what a babe, what a professional, and what a lady.

@MsJollycholly Utterly brilliant comment.. Says everything!

Today would have been Cyd's 90th birthday. What a great day to remember her and her talent. :)

Cyd was sexy. Dancers are cool.

heh, I love how at the end she's like "Shiny thing! Gimme!" It's a wonderful scene though. Very wonderfully done!

Perfection!
blackbutterfly76 10 months ago
Gene Kelly dances great even when he keeps getting a wedgie. Cyd Charisse still has the best looking legs anyone's ever flashed on the screen. If this were done today it would be in 2 second fragments and require no dancing at all.
unclealand 11 months ago 3
I think the coin flipping just goes with the idea of how people viewed money and welthy in the 20's (think of the Great Gatsby) actually, I thought of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald when I saw them dance here, and with how Cyd was posessed by money, much how Zelda wouldn't marry scott until he had more money.
But I love the colors in this, and if you pause at :42-:44 ish, all the colors together with that cloud of smoke, great still moment. although i've never seen the whole thing :/
anUHkins 11 months ago
@anUHkins Oh, Christ, give me a break... The art of retrospective over-analysis is the curse of the 20th Century. The coin fipping is a parody of George Raft in 'Scarface' - he flips a coin throughout the film and it also explains the scar on the hood's face here. The entire number is an homage to styles and stars of the 20s: Cyd Charisse as vamp in the manner of Louise Brooks and Gene Kelly as a geek in the mould of Harold Lloyd. Believe me, there is no social commentary going on here.
ErchieMcGeakle 10 months ago 4
@ErchieMcGeakle the '20's in general were a corrupt time for people with easy money, i could easily see how it relfects the lifes of scott and zelda. to each their own.
anUHkins 10 months ago
@ErchieMcGeakle thank you very much.....old movies are to be ENJOYED not PSYCHOANALYZED

i absolutely adore this musical, but i have a question about this scene, to be honest: i'm not really understanding what's up with the men flipping a coin in their hands. is it supposed to be symbolic of something?
viva7italia7bella 11 months ago
@viva7italia7bella Sure, it's made to remain Scarface (Howard Hawks, 1932), a film of mafia, where George Raft does it all the time. That's also taken up in Some like it hot (1959, with Marilyn...)
Sorry for my English, I'm French... hope I've been some help !
cinema20a60 11 months ago
@viva7italia7bella He's a gangster. It's just a old movie cliche about gangsters.
mlgmoore 10 months ago
Very sexual/sensual. These are two very strong/leggy dancers. No polite stuff here. Cyd is out of this world and Gene is not too shabby himself. My Mom had a 'thing' for him.
windstorm1000 11 months ago
She was more than a match for Gene Kelly AND Fred Astaire.

@swmdal you got that right. I thought Ginger was good, but Cyde takes the cake.

The problem is that we all want bigger and better when "style" is innate. Anyone can learn a trick but style is from within. The problem is we encourage the tricks and don't talent......These guys had style. Gene Kelly, Donald O'connor, Cyd Charisse (she had legs to jesus....) and Ann Renking (spelling?) (she's me hero...)These are TRUE dancers....I'm not dissing the current talent it's just that we dont help our current dancers with their style, just tricks.....
stacykd123 1 year ago
@stacykd123 that's very true. Actually, that can be applied to the entire era we're living in, especially mainstream america. Everyone is focused on tricks, visuals and sex, and all other exterior actions and concepts. But none of them have style because like you said, it comes from within. It's like they have a hollow interior.
chilvari 1 year ago
@chilvari you loose your self talking about the within! Feed in man the within is only ok when you accept yourself! It is not not only peoples blame for focusing on the looks. And jsut because people are beautifull and glamorous and confident doesnt mean they empty and vain.
I call that talk of sheet lack of confidence in yourself, always winning (people cant see me because I'm ugly) Take pitty on yourself and die orelse just show yourselves to world with all your might
mstrmilhanos 11 months ago
@mstrmilhanos I barely read your comment and already I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. I think you're responding to the wrong person. Besides, I don't have time for such uncomprehendable nonsense.
chilvari 11 months ago
I was raised a dancer.... That said, It's been a long time....I'm now 46....anyway....the thing these guys (and gals) got is style. The new kids can do all of the tricks. God knows, i couldn't do them. But what the new generation lacks is style. They can all do back flips and this and that, but they aint got style.....they could stand to take a step back and learn alittle. Look and these guys~they are soooo smooth...that's what it's al about...
So, new generation, learn.....
