  • Steiger had the best performance in the film, easily.

  • CLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think Rod Steiger is one of the best actors ..... he gave an awesome performance in this film. He made his character ,Komarovsky, so unforgettable. I still want to kick his ass for putting Lara through all that!!

  • steiger blew the other actors out of the water including the much over-praised and maniacal performance of kinski.

  • God is in the details of a David Lean picture.

  • down the humor a lot. I've enjoyed this movie free at Movie WATCHER . US

  • That sugar was probably worth its weight in gold. God bless zhivago

  • Mine too!!! Lawrence of Arabia+Dr. Zhivago+Bridge on the River Kwai+Passage to India=Best Movies Ever!!!

  • WHAT!? Rod Steiger was the BEST! I fucking LOVE Steiger!

Your taste is all in your mouth 92af.

    Dean

  • 92af, you don`t know what you`re talking about. Steiger was incredible. Well regarded by BOTH critics and fans.

  • STEIGER COME BACK the actors dont care anymore he was great

  • "CLAAAAAAY!"

  • lmaooooooo

  • Oddly, I knew a Russian lawyer, also named Viktor, who was amazingly like this screen character. Not in looks, but certainly in attitude, which is why I appreciate Steiger's fantastic performance.

  • Odd that you say that. They were directed by the same person and have many cast and crew members in common. You need to see David Lean's other movies.

  • My favorite movie!

  • but didn't you think it was funny when he fell down the stairs?

  • Just so everyone knows, the 2002 miniseries of Doctor Zhivago is a new adaptation, not a remake.

    I like both versions.

  • Love it when he falls down the stairs, he deserves it.

  • Rod Steiger is great in this part.

  • Rod Steiger is UNBELIEVABLE in this movie. His Komarovsky is one of my all time favorite movie characters.

  • Rod Steiger could be a ham who didn't always make the best movie choices, but he was brilliant in this film, and should have won an Oscar for THE PAWNBROKER in the same year (1965).

The one he got for IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT two years later was very well deserved.

  • grabit, I've heard that about Steiger. Which movies is he hammy in? I have only seen him giving great performances. You have me intrigued.

  • Rod Steiger was a great actor - one of the all time great American actors. He was too heavy and rough looking to be a star, but as a character actor he was unmatched.

  • Julie Christie's beauty is mesmerizing.

  • @jugganaut35 - absolutely, fell 'in love' with this woman in this performance, dream stuff.

  • no problem, cuz you can now watch it online. here's a link:

    blogger-films.blogspot.*com/2008/11/doctor-zhivago.html

  • How dare Keira Knightley or anybody remake this! There can only be Omar Sharif and Julie Christie in this OK?!

  • That terrible adaptation of Pride and Prejiduce with Keira is enough. Does she really want to play Lara in remake?

  • That's just the thing she already did a remake of Dr. Zhivago for TV for the US. Why? Dunno...

  • Now I've recalled that I saw that version. It is not as good as this one. Also I tnink that scenes with cutting hands were too much. As cruel as that war was, I never heard of cutting hands and legs.

  • Well, I watched it too and Hans Matheson played a good Doctor Zhivago. I liked it. It's a different version. That's all.

  • Since I am from Russia, I can feel when it is fake. This is why I don't buy newer version. Romantic "scene" with candles is wrong ( for example). One doesn't have it in Russia.

  • Yeah, It's sad when people from somewhere else make movies on your country and put the foot in. But you see I've watch period dramas made i Spain that talk about Spanish people centuries ago and they're rubbish. The vision of people from nowadays is behind every shot. They distort every word, every sequence so as to give it a modern point of view. Though it could have been better, I did enjoy that 2002 version (I may even watch the one from 2006)& I want a Russian version as well!Live Doctor!

  • Hollywood done pretty good version of "Crime and Punishment". If it is done well, I am only happy. I never saw Russian version of Zhivago. This story was banned for a long time, because it was not what the Government wanted people to know about that time. In my opinion, it is the truthful book about that time, but other than that it is not much of a book.

  • Why not juxtapose this with clips of Sam Neill in the Keira Knightley version.

  • CLAY! CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

  • Steiger was a brilliant actor - a couple of years before he passed on he did a wonderful interview for Turner Classics. He described a scene with Julie where he was to forcefully kiss her and she was to convey her shock, dislike and revulsion without saying anything. After a few unsuccessful "takes" Rod decided to use a little actor-studio realism. For the next shot, Rod, without Julie's knowledge, slipped his tongue into her mouth and Mr. Lean got the reaction he was looking for. Cut, print!

  • ETIENNE- UGH! I an sympathise with Julie. That was done to me as a child by an adult, and it was simply FOUL, especially as my attacker drank and smoked- the smell and taste were disgusting.Yergh! But to give Steiger his due, he really knew how to act.

  • That was a terrible thing to do to a child - my sympathies to you for having experienced that.

  • Thanks, Etienne- but whenever that memory comes back, I always remind myself that other kids have had it far worse than I. I was lucky!

  • Victor brought sugar for the child.

  • Too True. Human beings are seldom human and don't like being reminded of just how horrible we can be. But movies like Dr. Zhivago show us just how beautiful simple things like love can be.

  • coralarch--Good response! The Old Testament and movies like Dr. Zhivago make many uncomfortable with their portrayals of human depravity. We all certainly need a Savior.

  • amazing scene! I'm only halfway through the novel but I'm guessing the visitor is Komarovsky?

  • rahit, yes, Viktor himself- the one and only, played by the one and only Rod Steiger.

  • TURN THAT BULL OFF!

    I BROUGHT SOME DVD'S!

    What'd you bring?

Dr. Zhivago, Brace Encounter, and Birds on the River Kwai!

  • Hahahaha, Unforgivable.

  • It's "Brief Encounter" and "Bridge on the River Kwai."

  • This has got to be one of the most dramatic scenes in the entire movie. And this is one awesome movie.

  • TURN THAT BULL OFF!

  • I like it when he falls down the stairs. In the beginning of the movie he was prophetic, when Steiger's character told Pasha Antipov/Strelnikov "partisans just may win.." when they were in the diner.

  • This is not the best scene with the extraordinary Rod Steiger, superb actor. I prefer the scenes where he seduces the 17 year old Lara. I could not have resisted him either, even at 50 or 60 ! I admire Rod Steiger, only he could play Viktor Ippolitovich Komarovsky.

  • Monichat- agree 100%! Steiger was brilliant! Hateful, yet somehow likeable. A memorable villain.

  • yaaa unforgivable

  • UNFORGIVABLE!

  • lol thats why i looked this up. lol

BITCH!! WHO SAID U COULD SIT DOWN?? U BETTER WAIT FOR MY REQUEST!! YA CUNT!!!

  • brilliant scene

  • the same here unforgivable

  • i looked this up because it was in an "unforgivable" video on youtube, look it up its great

  • lol thats fuuny thats the same reason i looks this up lol

  • rod stieger...one of the best actors that ever was

  • One of my favorite movie lines of all time is when Dr Zhivago says, "I just want to LIVE!"

  • When Kamarovsky makes the comment to Lara, "who are you to refuse me anything", he is referring to the affair they had together. Then Zhivago throws him out and K says, "We're all made of the same clay, you know...Clay!

  • LOL LO LOL LOL!! Coralarch made me laff lol

    Jezxxxx

  • great great scene, thanks for posting!

  • Too much passion, lust & adultery in this movie for my taste.

  • Well, if that turns you off, I pray you never read the Old Testament!

  • In what century do you live, please. This is not the Middle Ages after all.

  • One Of The Greatest Movies Ever! Thanx For Posting This Video!

  • I agree. THE greatest movie ever made! There has never been a better one! ;o)

  • do u have any other scenes?

  • A great performance? Steiger was melodramatic as they come, and not in a good way. He's better in this than some of his other performances like the hysterical Amityville Horror but it still has his usual over-enunciation and random outbursts.

  • poor komarovsky :(

  • Victor brought some sugar for the child.

  • i don't like this part. why did you choose this part? I like the part Zhivago with his wife(not Lara) in the ball room. Tonya is very beautiful and zhivago acts like a gentlman! Of course, this couldn't relect the reality of the world.
