I think The Mountain Goats as a band are esoteric, as in they're not for everyone, but only a select few who don't mind the nasally voice. :P

The lyrics I think are more brutal in their simplicity and the way they can appeal to so many disillusioned Americans. I wouldn't love the band at all if I couldn't relate to all these lyrics in one way or another.

This song is great, but esoteric lyrics? Really? They're not hard to gloss:

He takes various vacations with his significant other and finds that the love seems to be gone. He wishes this weren't the case. There is a comparison of this phenomenon to a messy room.
