I think The Mountain Goats as a band are esoteric, as in they're not for everyone, but only a select few who don't mind the nasally voice. :P
The lyrics I think are more brutal in their simplicity and the way they can appeal to so many disillusioned Americans. I wouldn't love the band at all if I couldn't relate to all these lyrics in one way or another.
This song is great, but esoteric lyrics? Really? They're not hard to gloss:
He takes various vacations with his significant other and finds that the love seems to be gone. He wishes this weren't the case. There is a comparison of this phenomenon to a messy room.
My favorite live concert to date!

Great song, can't but think about how even greater this song could be without his really bad vibratto, he does not have to do that.
YUMMYngbird 1 year ago
@YUMMYngbird jd doesn't use vibrato. what you're hearing is due to the recording quality.
haircut74 1 year ago
@haircut74 In this song, it's partially poor quality, but he does use vibrato at times, in this and others.
