Well, I have a netgear gigi switch, fasted computer in the market and 2x2TB of Seagate HD. This NAS is very time consuming if you ever want to copy the files from drive 1 to Drive 2. I copied 1.5TB of folder with files 17 hours. The speed was around 4MByets/sec.
Hey I use PS3MediaServer to play all my music and movies and have my stuff nicely with the album covers and show up on my ps3. Now I know if you hook up an external HD straight to the PS3 the music and movies show but no album art. Will this show the album art? what do you mean it does not have USB?
For initial transfers, you could always hook it up via a crossover cable directly to your NIC and you may get better speeds. I have no clue why you had BSODs. Plus you can use the USB port on the back not only as a printserver, just takes some telnet access.
but this is brilliant look at the different view of it use as a webserver very cheap to run and cost low. bittorent is great on it. if you want it to transfer quicker connect direct to computer very usefull
i enjoyed this review. PPl shouldn't be too unhappy with this because its cheap and does wat it says it does. Networks drives arent going to run like a sata drive at any time. Its the other things that make up for the speed issue. It helps stream, you can access stuff from home, you can use raid and jbod, plus you can hack the unit crazy. I dare anyone to find a better unit for the same price.
If you want an alternate, Windows Home Server. But then that defeats the purpose doesnt it?
@Rednostalgia 4hrs for 3 gb. That means your transfer rate was 200kb/s which is unusual for this unit. True its slower than direct usb, but its not that slow. Maybe your network connection between this/your mac/your router wasn't set up properly.
But I agree, avoid this unit. Stick with a normal USB drive encloser, or get a better NAS.
@Rednostalgia I agree with 3rdchild79. There probably is a problem with your network. Under extreme tweeking I managed to get 37MB/s out of this device. Normal speed with no changes made get me around 20-25MB/s on a MacBook Pro Mid 2010 using a wire and around 8-9 wirelessly which is enough for me. It streams HD Movies to 5 different devices at once without a problem. You have to have a high end router as well. I will soon make a video to proof my statement.
Thanks for the review bud! Looking at the DNS-321 which sounds similar but no torrent support and no usb printer support. By the sounds of it I wont miss the torrent support... I'll probably just download from my comp to the DNS.... and I don't own a printer so that's not a big deal.
actually you can mod your DNS 323 without harming it. Install a 3rd party (tranmission) bit torrent client with blocklists enabled instead of the shitty dlink torrent client. You can also mod the usb as an external drive attachment. A good knowledge of linux is a requirement to get these thing up and running...;)
Well there are NAS out there that have eSATA or slave USB support. You know.. just like how WIRELESS routers also have ports on the back for wired connectivity. Would you be ok if your wireless router didn't have wired connections on the back just because it's stated as a wireless router? We should all expect more from manufacturers. How else do we get better products?
So I say get that instead. I dunno about you, but having the option of faster uploading speed is a BIG plus for me. I would spend the extra money for it.
Again, this unit performs perfect when streaming. No problem there.

hi ,
Do you know any Storage brand support both Network and USB port in the same time (NAS/)DAS?
ybaabbad 1 year ago
Well, it is a NAS (Network Attached Storage).
If you want eSATA and stuff, you should have got a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) instead.
Most NAS-boxes for home use usually get up to 20 - 25 MB/s transfer speed at max.
That is my own experiense.
