I just got one of these cartridges for my Technics SL-D202, which has a medium to high mass s-shaped tonearm. The sound is quite good for the price I paid, which was only $37.50. I hear there are upgrades available but frankly, the sound is quite good with the stock stylus. The quality on mine is very nice, straight stylus and cantilever. Alignment is a bitch, but once you get it there, the sound will amaze you. This is a really great stop-gap cartridge for someone saving up for a killer MC.
This is an awesome cartrigde. Got it for 18€ new in bulk package. I also had the AT-91, basic cartrigde that retails for same price, the 95E is better. Cleaner, softer, balanced, very nice. Going to but another 95E to replace it.
@srsairbags The M97E has a smoother sound but your chances of getting one that isn't defective out of the box in some way is very slim, since they are made in Mexico. I went through 3 without getting one with an not-bent stylus. These AT95e's are a little on the brighter side of the spectrum, but break in nicely, and are made in Japan while selling for less money.
I've just bought one of there cartridges from Amazon UK but I'm worried about the tracking force, my Technics SL-10 can be adjusted to a 1.5g max. Will this be ok do you think?
@moochincrawdad It should be OK... It's the low end of the range, though. You may get a tiny bit of mistracking but that should calm down after it gets broke in. :) JC
@BadEditPro Thanks, as a turntable novice I'm not spending any more money than I need to on gear that I can't set up properly, I'm not going to fall into the audiophile pit of despair.
there on several online places selling these online including amazon
for along time this cartridge has been sold as a starter cart on many turntables over the years and it can be upgraded by changing the stock stylus with a fineline or shibita sold by lp gear or lptunes
@freezazoid Hey, I'd love to as long as I don't have to pay the $200. Anybody who wants me to review a cart over $200 can message me and I'll tell them where to send it. :) JC
@BadEditPro .... true... I just meant if you've bought so many 60-100 dollar cartridges why not buy fewer cartridges but nicer ones. It seems like you're wasting your money on cheap shit. But a LOT of money on cheap shit.
Lastly, I bought a vintage Technics SL-B2 turntable for about 30$. It was manufactured in 1980 and when I bought it, there were no more belt and no more needle (on a Shure M70B). Yesterday, I bought a brand new belt manufactured by Panasonic/Technics for 10$. Last sunday, I purchased online the Audio-Technica AT95e brand new cartridge instead of changing the Shure needle. I wonder if I should hear a difference between both cartridges.
Hmm I'm using a Technics SL1200 MK2. I've read that the AT95E 'fits well' with the Technics tonearm. What are your views? I listen to mostly electronic music with heavy bass, jazz, and some rock (like The Beatles)
@BadEditPro I thought exactly the same thing, but it was the only half inch mount cart I had with a usable stylus. So on it went. Keep in mind this isn't your normal plastic scary changer, it's got adjustable tracking force both coarse (back of the arm) and fine (sliding weight on the arm itself) adjustments and anti skate and a nice silicone damped set down and possibly the nicest built arm I've ever seen on a changer. the bic 940 and 980 were even more amazing, the 920 is the "cheap" model!
I'm debating getting one of these for the BIC 920 changer I just got done cleaning and repairing. I mounted my Shure M97XE in there now, it sounded great which shocked me but I really like the AT sound, I may just keep the Shure in there, really amazed how it sounds on this thing, and when I got it (for free & in sad shape) I was thinking "oh god a cheap record changer" but after cleaning tons of gluey old grease out of it, its amazing, now I just gotta find a 45 changer adaptor for it.
You can't beat the A-T cartridges unless you're a DJ (but then you're a brute). There's another version of this cartridge with a yellow stylus that has a spherical tip that will last a bit longer and cost less to replace. Seriously, they might look cheap but they sound great. Way better than the old Shure and Stantons that were made in the 60's.
Always go with the Japanese cartridges for quality.
@0UT3RL1M1T5 This is a half inch cart... The closest p-mount version in quality would be an AT301EP. The 301EP is a nice sounding cart and would work for your TT but I still say the M92E would be a better choice. :) JC
@ericohman Looks like the but is defective. I have no such problem with mine. I'd call the dealer you got it from and ask for an exchange... Unfortunately, these screws are specific to the cart and a replacement set would be had to find. The AT95E is a great sounding cart and it would be worth the trouble.:) JC
@nikostz9 Get the 2M Red. It's head and shoulders above either the AT or the Shure. The AT95E sounds great for the price but the distortion is rather high. The M97xE is rather dark sounding compared to the Red. :) JC
@nikostz9 It depends on how critical you are about the sound you'll get. The 95E has a bice sounds but doesn't track as well as the Ortofons do. So, it may sound wonderful on some records and distorted and crappy on others. If you plan on playing mainly brand new LP's, the AT95E might be just fine for you. The Ortofon is going to give you a more consistent sound on used and new records alike. :) JC
@DuskY1991 It would be a good choice. They are robust and cheap as well as being good sounding. You can always upgrade later if you want something more sophisticated. :) JC
@BadEditPro Thanks for the reply. I just purchased one. I almost went for a Shure M92E, but I - as newbie, was told that this particular AT or the more expensive Shure M97xE or Nagaoka MP-11 would be a better choice. So I chose the cheapest with the best review and/or recommendation. I wonder how it will perform on the 6300.
@DuskY1991 It should do OK... These carts have a long break in period. You'll have to use it for a while to know whether you really like it or not. :) JC
@BadEditPro Thanks JC! I'll probably be spinning records non-stop when the cart gets here! I have no clue on the breaking in of carts, but I bet it's somewhat similar to the breaking in of microphones and speakers. I'd probably like everything right now, unless I quickly become a cart collector like yourself (then I'd be listening more critically very soon)!
Hello ! I had the same cartridge, but Ortofon OM5e is much better. Belive me, I have been changed many cartridges over the years, and Ortofon cartridge OM5E is stunning! Buy it and you will hear the difference. Price is almost the same like the AT95E, but sound is so purified with Ortofon, its also distorsion free! Cheers!
@amanvisebre I will keep that in mind. I just bought a Denon DP23F and I put my Shure M97xE on it. The sound is amazing so the P-,mount table is going to go into backup mode for a while. :) JC
Are you happy with the way it handles cracks, pops and surface noise? In my opinion the cartridge sounds good but emphasis these unwanted noises too much. Also IGD is an issue with the AT...
@HotelBloedel Mine is relatively good with surface noise... I plan on putting it on a new Denon TT I just bought so we'll see how the distortion is on the new tonearm. Overall, I like the sound but I still have not completely broken in this cart. :) JC
@SirFoggy2Doped Professional cartridges are designed to track proper at between 3 and 5 grams. The Audio-Technica ATP-2 can track at as much as 7 grams. My Stanton Discmaster V3 tracks best at 4 grams. :) JC
@SirFoggy2Doped No... They track at between 3 and 6 grams... The Stanton 500 tracks best at around 4 grams. The AT95E tracks right at 2 grams. The difference is the strength of the cantilever and the stylus shape. I have a video up about that. :) JC
@margaretsville One of the things about my particular from of the disease is that I want to find the cheapest yet best sounding cartridge in the world. I don't know if any MC cart fits in that category. :) JC
On my Sanyo TP X1 turntable (1981), the Sanyo MD-35D cartridge is exactly the same than the AT95E cartridge. In November 2005, I bought a Normarh conical needle for about 19$ and after 5 years of use, there's a sound quality degradation. So, I need to change my stylus and I bought a new ATN95E Audio-Technica Stylus for about 37$. I didn't receive yet my stylus by mail, but I hope that there will have a nice difference! See you soon! J.C. Mercier
@mercierjc2007 Very interesting... You should hear a big difference with the elliptical stylus. The AT95e tracks very well and I haven't noticed any sibilance or obvious stylus generated distortion. :) JC
@BadEditPro About my Normarh 412d (2005), I used it over 50 000 often of plays and I listened a lot of vinyl records. Generaly, I listen between 15 and 20 hours of music per week on my Sanyo turntable.
My old Normarh stylus is one of the cheapest stylus that I bought in my life and when I bought it, I brought my cartridge and the technician chose a stylus blindly. Obviously, I didn't pay attention on the technical characteristics (I was 15 old).
Do you like this better than your M97xe? I have an AT92e and an AT90 and I don't really like either of them, so I am ind of leery of buying another AT cartridge.
@SupraWes I just got this cart and I haven't spent a great deal of time listening to it yet but my initial impression is that it sounds better than the M97e. I have noticed a bit more distortion but that could just be the cart breaking in... I'll know for sure once I get a little better acquainted with it:) JC
everything works fine.I just pressed the MM/MC button on my amp.it was working on MC,instead of MM.
anyway, this really sounds good, but I remember that before this cartridge I had an AT 105,if I remember good.but it sounded louder, with this one I have to turn up the amp some more to get it to the same level.
@costellom5 I was getting ready to go into this long thing about input resistance but switching to MM would make a big difference. LOL This cartridge seems to be more tolerant to impedance mismatch then other I've tried. Can't wait to get it broke in! :) JC
I use this cartridge with my sansui sr 232.it sounded good for like 6 months or so.after a while(last week)it all went wrong.I don't know if it's the cartridge,or the fact that I chnaged some resistors in my amp,(the resistors are on the EQ board wich also has the phono rca jacks connected to this board. All other inputs work fine)but I can't hear the high frequency anymore.
nice! i was looking at a an AT95, till i found the AT-440MLa at a slightly higher price and went for that instead. if i found the 95 at the price you found it for, i would have it as we speak (and some more vinyl lol). can't wait to hear an upload sample from it!
@agfamatic91 It's funny, I never liked AT carts years ago and now I have three of them. This is the best sounding out of the bunch. Very smooth. :) JC
don't sweat it man, i like it when you cover all these different carts.i have an older audio technica,it has no bass whatsoever even through a sony reciever.i suppose i need a pre-amp for it.otherwise the sound from it is crystal clear as a bell and i love it's sound.
@dimebagdave77 Thanks! The old AT carts just didn't have much low end and a blisteringly strident high end... Seems like you must have one of those. The new generation are much flatter and more well rounded. This one has a very warm low end but it isn't boomy like some other carts I've heard. I'm digging the clarity and the super stereo. Not bad for $50. :) JC
@BadEditPro that's exactly right B.E.P. i got it from my grandmother's techniques when she was going to upgrade to a surround system.i tired to explain my opinions about audio to her but i was one up against many at radio shack of all places!at any rate, she hardly ever used it and it had just been sitting there for 20+ years,so i grabbed it!
@BadEditPro Interesting what you said about old AT carts. I'm new to vinyl and recently bought a Panasonic RD-2900 from (I believe) the late 70s, with its original AT cartridge. The bass is weak and the highs are sibilant and distorting. "sss" sounds in vocals and cymbal crashes are shrill and unpleasant. I've already taken the table in to have an Ortofon 2m Red installed and I'm hoping for a drastic improvement. I suppose my stylus was likely completely worn after all that time.
@lowfirepierce What you are describing sounds exactly like a worn stylus. I've never heard of that particular Ortofon cartridge but you are probably making a big mistake replacing it because there are so many physical factors involved in the proper alignment of the stylus to the record. Sorry.
@lowfirepierce What you are describing sounds exactly like a worn stylus. I've never heard of that particular Ortofon cartridge but you are probably making a big mistake replacing it because there are so many physical factors involved in the proper alignment of the stylus to the record. Sorry. Good luck.
So, you need technological intervention huh? Can't stop buying cartridges? Well, what's so bad about that, other than the depletion to you bank account?
Actually, that is a great price on a cart with such outstanding specs. And Personally, I don't think it is ugly. I like the colors!. There must be some royalty free music records you can play somewhere, like maybe those sold for music cuing and sound effects? They let you use the music loops anywhere. Would be nice to hear these things.
@clydesight LOL.. Thanks! I will try and post some audio once I get it broke in a little. The trick is to find something that won't get flagged... I am going to have to search out just such a record as you described so I can demo these things. :) JC
wow that is amazing !! I really like how this cartridge has the 20-20,000 hz freq. response! I must say that for 40 dollars, that must be a really great deal. Like you said about the bass, my cart is like that too which i find interesting. it has some bass but when you put on a certain record (esp. satisfaction by the rolling stones :) ) it has more bass... nice video, i enjoyed watching it :)
@0UT3RL1M1T5 Thanks! The bass is interesting. It's very detailed but not too far out there. I still have only played a few albums on it so we'll see how it goes as it breaks in. :) JC
i guess the reason why it´s so ugly.is probably to sell it so cheap!

@SupraWes I just got this cart and I haven't spent a great deal of time listening to it yet but my initial impression is that it sounds better than the M97e. I have noticed a bit more distortion but that could just be the cart breaking in... I'll know for sure once I get a little better acquainted with it:) JC

There's no cure for your addiction l'm afraid JC :-) You can always go on cartridge therapy to try and help l guess.

@BadEditPro A tour of AT's factory might be just the therapy. :-)))

never mind.this should be official.I'm an idiot.
everything works fine.I just pressed the MM/MC button on my amp.it was working on MC,instead of MM.
anyway, this really sounds good, but I remember that before this cartridge I had an AT 105,if I remember good.but it sounded louder, with this one I have to turn up the amp some more to get it to the same level.
costellom5 1 year ago

:) JC

don't sweat it man, i like it when you cover all these different carts.i have an older audio technica,it has no bass whatsoever even through a sony reciever.i suppose i need a pre-amp for it.otherwise the sound from it is crystal clear as a bell and i love it's sound.
dimebagdave77 1 year ago

@dimebagdave77 Some people get and some don't... I say grab whatever they're willing to give you and enjoy it. :) JC

@lowfirepierce Please let me know what the 2M does for you... I've heard very good things about them. :) JC

@lowfirepierce What you are describing sounds exactly like a worn stylus. I've never heard of that particular Ortofon cartridge but you are probably making a big mistake replacing it because there are so many physical factors involved in the proper alignment of the stylus to the record. Sorry.

:) JC
