  • imagine trying to get off of a plane doing this these days...

  • This is so funny, not seen it for ages. Thanks for uploading!!

  • So how did Chevalier get off the boat?

  • Groucho just randomly picks up a girl and then while Chico is singing, he is like flirting with that other girl! So funny!

  • One of my favorite movie scenes of all time.

  • Whenever I go through customs at the airport and they ask for my passport I laugh on the inside, and sometimes it leaks out. All because of this scene.

  • Harpo's fantastic in this, but if someone were to try that today, they'd be arrested as a "terrorist". Ah, the land of the free.

  • @JoshSitar Heeeheee

  • Chevalier + The Marx Bros = pure gold

  • haha what's groucho saying to the chicken behind him when chico's singing ?

  • What's also funny is they apparently could have just snuck right off

  • Chico changes the lyrics to: If a nightingale could sing like you, would sing much better than you do. Hehe.

  • FUNNY!!!

  • Chevalier! Haha.Classic.

  • doesn't really matter what movie it's from. buy them all and see for yourselves :) or just enjoy the comic genius!

  • for sure it is from Monkey Biz (1931) . Monkey Biz takes place on a boat.or at least a set that looks like a boat.

  • Classic. I own and have seen every Marx Bros. except humor risk and love happy

  • Harpo Speaks! And he's Chevalier!!

From what I have read Zeppo's sense of humor was very like Groucho's, so that when they honed the four brother act Zeppo had to be the straight man. His timing and attitude was so much like his older brother that it would have unbalanced the act. The proof came in 1928 when they were doing Coconuts on Broadway, and Groucho had to take a vacation. He became suspicious when invited to stay out longer. He went to see the show and saw Zeppo stole it.

  • i like how they mess up the lyrics half the time XD

luv harpo's rendition best of all. was wondering what he'd do to imitate chevalier

  • I remember going to an old theater back when I was in High School in the early 60's, they were showing Marx Brothers movies all week. My brothers and friends were sitting together in the same row, and when this scene came on we laughed so hard that we all fell out of our seats and found our selves laying on the floor and we couldn't catch our breath. It was an unforgettable experience. It was really true when those great comedians said thy would have the audiences rolling in the aisles.

  • Chico (pointing @ Harpo): "Hey, he looks like Chevalier!"

    Groucho: "Yes, there's a striking..."

  • As usual, Harpo steals the scene.

The harried passport official is Davison Clark, whose sterm look and gruff voice landed him nearly 150 roles as policemen, lawyers, military men, politicians etc. Clark also appeared in Duck Soup but was mainly relegated to "B" movies and uncredited roles during his career.

  • This is my favorite scene too. I can watch it over and over and crack up every time! Thanks for sharing!

  • my favorite Marx brother scene ever. Surreal and insanely funny.

It wasn't the same when Zeppo left. The trio needed a straight man and he complimented the wacky trio just right.

  • @brycedavid I agree, at first Zeppo sticks out like a sore thumb, but the more you watch the movies with him, the better he fits into the picture!

  • @brycedavid - Amen to that!! With the probable exception of "A Night At the Opera," all the best Marx Brothers movies were with Paramount - and with Zeppo. The later movies showed how indispensible Z was when they had to keep filling his role with a succession of straight men - and none of them were as good as Zeppo.

  • Watch that CHICO trying2say

    "VERBAL TALK" that he's

    MAURICE CHEVALIER!@1:48"

    saying~

    WAIT" I'll PROVE IT!!!

    right prove it@CIVIL SUPREME!!!

  • LOOK AT THAT FACE !

  • Zeppo did really well according to Harpo anyway

  • The only movie where Zeppo gets to be funny

  • Thus id the curse of the straight man.

  • @MortelLegendre - Well, there's a scene he has in "Animal Crackers" with Groucho that is pretty funny as well.

  • I read in that when Zeppo quit the movies he became an agent for talent, and was very successful at that.

  • He Zeppo ( Herbert) and Milton (Gummo, was the less known Marx brother) became very successful in a factory that made plane parts. all of them had a very good life except for Chiko, who was a gambler his whole life. He died poor.

  • Monkey Business is my favorite Zeppo movie.

  • not wash broad !

  • "If a nightingale..."

My, this picture. It brings a smile to my face just to think.

  • One of the best movie set pieces of all time. thanks for posting.

  • I love how they're having this completely serious conversation about how "you've got to sing Chevalier's song to get off this boat!" Anyone else doing this scene would just look dumb. But with the Marx Brothers it's a triumph! Lol ;)

  • He never liked show business, he was acording to Harpo always planing to escape it.

  • In his memoirs, Groucho relates how, on the night of a stage performance of THE COCONUTS, he was sick and so Zeppo stepped in, took over the Groucho role and pratically stole the show. Must've been hard for Zeppo, living in the shadows of the other brothers.

  • yay! someone agrees with me about Zeppo. You can see him biteing back his comebacks to Groucho.

  • At 2: 17 Groucho said,"look at her face", lmao

  • Love Harpo when he stamps the mans head at the end. He was just fantastic.

  • Chevalier first performed "You Brought A New Kind Of Love To Me" in his 1930 Paramount musical, "The Big Pond", and it became so identified with him at that time, it was "shorthand" that, if you sang it, you MUST be "Chevalier"; hence, the routine seen here.

  • Zeppo's role in "Monkey Business" was more substantial than in other films. Why? I think Zeppo said in "Marx Brothers Scrapbook" that he didn't know, and that it wasn't through anything he did. Anyway, much better to have him as the semi-straight man than Allan Jones, Kenny Baker, etc.

Here, Zeppo and Chico both flub a line in singing "Nightingale": " ... they'd sing much better than YOU do" should be "...sing much better than THEY do." Groucho (and Chevalier) get it right.

  • @prchristman - GOT THAT RIGHT!

  • Zeppo was the method to their madness. When taking groucho's letter in animal crackers he leaves out the body because he didn't think it was important. who else could have gone against groucho like this? he was the link between groucho and the "normal" people in the movies. groucho runs articulate circles around everyone he talks to (chandler, dumont, trantino) but not zeppo. he was essential to the chemistry of the group.

  • I agree there... Zeppo was funny bu his humour was more understated and ironic. Ive heard an interview where Groucho's daughter stated that Zep was extremely funny, understudying fro Groucho during their vaudeville days. While the brothers were wild and wacky enough to stand on their own it's always better with a good straight man to contrast things

  • No one appreciates Zeppo's role. he is not supposed to be funny. He plays the role of the straight man. he is a foil for groucho to play jokes off of. the character you see in the movies is played perfectly and with purpose. in real life he was one of the funnier brothers. during their stage shows he was the understudy to all 3 of them. Occaisonally during "Animal Chracters" Groucho would sit in the audience and watch while zeppo played the part of Captain spaulding.

  • My favorite line that Groucho zinged Zeppo was in Horsefeathers at the beginning. "I always wanted children. Imagine my disapointment when you came along." What a line and insult.

  • no sitä minäkin

  • Maurice Chevalier the movie actor, i just ran into him.

    Did you hurt him?

    Classic groucho

  • I agree that Zeppo was underrated. The other three seem to have a lot more energy in the movies with Zeppo. I'm sure he was more prominent in their live performances.I heard that he could imitate not only Groucho but Chico and Harpo as well! Some say that you don't really notice him,but I think you notice him when he's missing. To me it seems like all of their movies after Duck Soup seem to be lacking something.

  • That is almost word for word what I told a friend about him. They were different after him. He was the calm in the eye of the storm. You needed at least one normal one in the group. Plus he could play the romatic part with his looks. And he was the perfect foil for Groucho when he wasnt insulting the other cast members. In a couple of movies they played father and son. Or maybe it was just Horsefeathers.

  • Zeppo's the Shemp of the Marx Brothers- he was featured before others (I think before Harpo originally, way back at the start of tehur Vaudeville careers) and the guy who replaced him just caught on more.

Zeppo's not bad- but it IS like the Stooges.

Look at the classic Stooges- Moe Curly Larry: who would take out in favor of Shemp? None.......

And then Groucho, Chico, Harpo- who would you take out to make room for Zeppo? None.......

Just not room for four, and so Zeppo missed out.

  • You are confusing Zeppo with his older brother, Gummo. He was an original part of the stage team in the early 1900's. He got bored with it and left. Zeppo came on in the late 20's. He was the baby of the family so he didnt have a comical part in the team. The others had been together as a team for almost 20 years before Zeppo. The Stooges are almost all slapstick. The Marx's have a blend of 3 types of humor which each brother performs. Their best movies were with Zeppo. You need a straight man.

  • Zeppo is without a doubt very underrated and least appreciated of the brothers. Groucho said that off-screen Zeppo was the funniest. During their days when they performed on the stage, Groucho got seriously ill and Zeppo took his place (with painted eyebrows and mustache). Zeppo was so funny on stage that Groucho returned as fast as he could.

I always felt that when Zeppo left it was never the same.

  • Zeppo Marx, my favorite of the Marx brothers. The most underrated brother and was called useless. When Zeppo left, the Marx brothers were in jeopardy with Duck Soup. You can respect the contributions of Groucho, Chico, and Harpo, but you can't forget what Zeppo has done. RIP Marx Brothers.

  • Zeppo played the serious 'straight man' of the Marx comedy family- so I never could tell if Zeppo was as funny as his brothers..

  • When I was ten years old, I was stuck home with pneumonia. I was down and had no energy. Luckly there was a Marx Brother's telethon on AMC. I laughed as best I could! Laughter is the best medicine and The Marx Brother's delivered!

  • Haha i love that hat switch at 0:56

  • Aww Youtube took down the video of "I'll Say She Is" someone repost it.

  • How funny is Harpo throwing those papers everywhere, stamping his head!

  • not washboard passport!

  • I love the Marx Brothers. Im 23 years old and from sweden. I remember my father had this movie on tape.. and I loved to watch it. This was my favourite scene. I was only three years old and had no idea what they said. Have seen this movie a million times! :P Love love love!

  • Kudos to your father, he did well. The Marx brothers were awesome.

Nostalgi. .. Och ja. Jag har sett The Young Ones. Superkul!! Alla Rik Mayall-filmer/serier har en speciell plats i filmhyllan :P . Vad är du för filur då? Take care

  • shouldn't harpo have gone first ?

  • when i first saw this scene i nearly fell out of my chair laughing so hard. The marx brothers are some of the best thats ever been

  • do you know who's on this boat - maurcie chevalier - i ust ran into him

    did you hurt him

    simple but effective

  • Zeppo is so underrated, he was a great singer, but he was not allowed to be funny because of Groucho.

  • I agree. Many say he was usless and not funny. I think he was funny in a more sophisticated sense.

  • I agree, the movies with zeppo were the best, the others it seemed like something was missing,

  • I think Zeppo sings pretty good! He's not as bad as some people think when they compare him to the other Brothers. Especially in the scene with the college widow (not in this movie). I like the cymbals at the end of Groucho's turn! That's too funny!

  • I agree. Zeppo had a very pleasant voice.

  • Great post. I can never get enough of this scene. Classic stuff.

  • Zeppo was the inventor, by the way, and what a gorgeous guy. In fact, they were all gorgeous. ^__^

  • He was definitely hot!

  • Thanks. Just when Harpo rubber stamps that guy on the head just makes me howl with laughter.

  • Chico was a math genius, Harpo could play any instrument, Groucho was a literary genius, Gummo and inventor, and Zeppo a body builder who dabbled in motors and engines. Harpo never got past fourth grade, and none went to college. Possibly the most amazing family in American screen history.

  • Did harpo really never get past 4th grade?

    XD

  • Harpo quit school when an Irish kid in Flatto's 4th grade class threw him out the window. Tired of being a harassed Jewish kid, and being bored of school, Harpo never returned. Despite "Harpo Speaks" being regarded so highly, he wrote it with a ghost author. Despite his being a full member of the literary "Algonquin Round Table" of writers, his spelling was totally phonetic, while the warmth and wit were 100% genuine.

  • Im PaulPaddickFan..just on a different screen name...any who...he accually didnt make it past 2nd grade. He said in his book that it was a new year...and the New york school bord moved young Adolph marx into 2nd grade..lol

It was something like that...i dont have his book with me at the moment but thats pretty much what he said..lol

  • This scene and the one with the puppet show are my favourites in the movie. Harpo is the funniest.

  • harpo the most convincing in spite of not appreciating the gravity of the situation

  • Interesting, it's the first time I watch the original version. In the German version they sing a french song.

    Marx Brothers forever!

  • Woooot, go Harpo!

  • A true classic!

  • This makes me laugh myself sick no matter how many times I see it.

  • LOL. Nice job Harpo =P

  • Harpo is so punk rock.

  • I think so too... too bad that he never got to listen to that music... lol but he had that attitude...

I thought I was the only one that thought harpo was a punk in some way

  • Harpo Rules!

  • I always say that Zeppo was so underated as a Marx brother. He should have been given more oppertunities to be funny in their films.

  • Äbsolutlely!!! According to many, Zeppo was very funny offscreen.

  • Yeah, He also sings the best. Its sad he was so underrated.

  • He was a great singer, i have some color footage from a break during "Anilmal Crackers" and you can see Zeppo going around joking with the ladies, hehe.

  • He sings in Horsefeathers, and he has a brilliant voice!

  • My favorite scene of all time, Thanks for sharing this! From a long-time Marx Brothers fanatic. My dog "Chevalier" also says thanks!

  • OMGsh....it's worth the slower pace (by today's standards) of comedy just to watch Harpo stamp that guy's head! haha!! Thanks for posting! They were surely gifts and full of talent!

  • This film is 'Monkey Business'

  • lol I watched this clip in history class. Marx Brothers are awesome

  • Oh, the Marx Brothers are the best, hands down.

  • When faced with stamp-wielding bureaucracy, I am often tempted to react as Harpo does in this scene.

  • Oh yes,I can't hold them apart sometimes

  • I own 8 movies,this is from A Night Of The Opera from 1935

  • It's from Monkey Business

  • lmao Harpo is the best

  • or is this an other movie?

  • Harpo can sing in slowmotion to applaus!

  • haha I love when harpo just hands someone his leg that shit is hilarious

  • The whole thing was great, but Harpo lip-synching made me laugh the most.

  • Hee. (For the record, I think Zeppo wins!)

  • Thanks to "AWCASAS" for the clip from Monkey Business. That's about the funniest thing I've ever seen, I have to say. Thanks very much.

  • LOL Harpo lost his mind

  • ahaha, i love the marxes and love this scene
