@McClernand2 you are crazy! at the time she was stabbed, monica had won 8 of 11 grand slams! steffi is the luckiest player ever..if monica had not been stabbed, steffi would never have won so many slams. i think steffi si great, but she has never acknlowledged her debt to seles. seles was dominating steffi until she was stabbed. if seles was never stabbed, steffi would be lucky to have 15-16 slams.; monica would have 20+ slams

Steffi beat her thrre times out of 4 in 1991 and 1992, including twice in straight sets (6/1 6/2 at wimbledon). The only victory taken by Monica was acquired after a most tough fight (10/8 in the 3rd set) and the outcome of it was mostly due to fortune.

steffi is a great. i saw first time when she play against martina navratilova in final but unfortunate she loose that match and win next year on same place and against same player in in final. and then she get no. 1 position in womens tennis for long time. so every one is good but steffi is best.

Good is quite some understatement. For me Graf and Seles are both part of a very small elite club of players who've been head and shoulders above the rest. In the ladies' game, Court, King, Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Seles, and now perhaps Serena form such a group (since the beginning of the open era). In the mens' game it's Laver, Borg, Sampras, Federer.
The fact that you not only wrote this comment, but that it was rated up by fans does not bode well for Graf fans.

It is easy to see : before the scandal broke out, Steffi had won 8 GS out of the last 9 she had played (and she would more than certainly had scored full marks, hadnt she been so sick by the 89 FO final). Moreover, she remained on 66 victories in a row. @McClernand2 you are crazy! at the time she was stabbed, monica had won 8 of 11 grand slams! steffi is the luckiest player ever..if monica had not been stabbed, steffi would never have won so many slams. i think steffi si great, but she has never acknlowledged her debt to seles. seles was dominating steffi until she was stabbed. if seles was never stabbed, steffi would be lucky to have 15-16 slams.; monica would have 20+ slams

seriously speaking : how can you say Seles was dominating Steffi until she was stabbed ? Steffi beat her thrre times out of 4 in 1991 and 1992, including twice in straight sets (6/1 6/2 at wimbledon). The only victory taken by Monica was acquired after a most tough fight (10/8 in the 3rd set) and the outcome of it was mostly due to fortune.

and Seles certainly didn't need 2 years off the Tour to recover from her (very light) wound. She just wanted to get some cheap rest for the Tour, as she was temporarily through with it, like Justine Hénin or Kim Clijsters.
The difference : Hénin and Clijsters didn't claim to have their 1st world place protected till they would fell like playing again. They didn't downgrade either the record of players who kept playing in their absence !!

I love both of these players. Seles was never the same after the attack. She developed an eating disorder and gained 30 pounds. Gunter Parche took a great rivalry away from all tennis fans.

Good is quite some understatement. For me Graf and Seles are both part of a very small elite club of players who've been head and shoulders above the rest. In the ladies' game, Court, King, Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Seles, and now perhaps Serena form such a group (since the beginning of the open era). In the mens' game it's Laver, Borg, Sampras, Federer.

I am no Seles fan, but its funny to see such a hostile reaction towards a player that was taken out so unfairly. And whose absence clearly enhanced the record of your little darling (who was being totally dominated by Seles in GS).
Graf was a great player. A strong contender for nr 2 thanks to the stabbing.

Moreover, they certainly didn't want to miss such a 'beautiful' opportunity to downgrade and slur, at a fairly low cost, a player they already hated because she was the most dangerous opponent to their icon.

Graf won 11 of her 22 slam titles before the attack on Seles, 6 while Seles was out, and another 5 after Seles had come back.
Now one can only speculate how many slams Graf would have won without the attack. But 15-20 seems probable, which is in the range of Navratilova or Evert.
Thus, while your statement is not incorrect, the "part" Graf's career owed to Seles' injury is rather small. Graf would surely also be considered an outstanding champion had Seles' career not been interrupted.

She was as popular as a champion can be while he or she is dominating. Crowds tend to support challengers in that case, as they supported her in her final season because she was obviously having to fight more.
She chose to retire in the same way Justine Henin later did: Just walk away from the sport without making any fuss.

Steffi n'était pas froide, elle était juste réservé et timide ! C T une des seules joueuses qui ne critiquait pas les autres au contraire, c t la plus grande joueuse en fin de carrière elle continuait à battre les plus grandes joueuses (Hingis, les Williams, Davenport, Capriati, Clijters etc..) Elle a eu beaucoup de problèmes physiques et personnels et c sur qu'elle aurait pu encore gagner un grand chlem, elle en avait les moyens ! Steffi est la plus grande joueuse !

When Seles was #1 she lost most of her matches against Graf.
And when we consider that Graf improved dramatically in 1993-95 we can conclude that Seles would have struggled a lot to even take a set from Graf in those years.

I think she was unlucky. Graf vs. Seles had "legendary rivalry" written all over it. This would have added to Graf's legacy, as McEnroe added to Borg's or King added to Cout's. Parche took that away from her.
Without Seles, Steffi's next strongest rivals were Sabatini and Sanchez-Vicario, who -- fine player as they were -- always were half a notch below Steffi (sabatini a full notch).
