good ol' times for me when i was doing this little experiment with a magic eye tube from an old radio and a speaker magnet. Even managed to curve the ray in a ring or swirl. The tube was connected directly in mains (heater filament on a step-down transformer) and worked just fine...

zomg! this is how the first video game was made. you put a clear overlay with a target drawn on it, you move some magnets fixed to a board and then switch on the tube and see if you hit the target. it was supposed to simulate firing a missile.
