  • The guy is actually Ukrainian

  • this vid sucks

  • I always admired Sikorsky. Due to the fact that I love aviation and hope to be an aircraft designer.

  • Nor Sikorsky, nor Focke, or any other arrogate to be the inventor of the helicopter, they would have done nothing without the work of Juan de la Cierva. Never

  • IGOR SIKORSKY, FATHER OF THE HELICOPTER? NEVER! If there were justice, history would say that was the spaniard Juan de la Cierva. It was he who invented the rotor flapping (the nature of the helicopter), who solved the problem, which meant that something with rotating wings could fly and be controlled. Focke and Sikorsky they bought the patents of Juan de la Cierva, and somehow this gave them practically all the work done

  • He was Ukrainian. Born in Kyiv, studied & worked in Ukraine before leaving for USA.

  • But even he had to move to America, how embarrassing... xD

  • People, please stop commenting and being irrational in self proclaiming rational. There's more to that story of origins of wars in Europe. The powers that we are not educated to understand...

Igor Sikorsky is a Ukrainian, born near Kiev, studied at KPI then it was Russian Empire, and the Ukraine was a part of it but it had not been Russia, it always was Ukraine even in Soviet Union despite terrible regime.

Scotland is Scotland despite it's a UK, and Mr Bell was a Scottish, was he? Not Eng.

  • Sikorsky is the father of modern helicopters. He invented the tail rotor. So all of you hating on his accomplishments please stfu you don't know anything if you tell me to check wiki. I work for Sikorsky and thank him many times in my mind for his genius and innovations.

  • @Youtoo2128

No. Sikorsky did not invent the tail rotor.

It was pioneered by Boris Yuriev.

Can you please explain Sikorsky's contribution to the following helicopters:

    watch?v=64fgG2CnHn0

    watch?v=pMNtmRw7r_A

    watch?v=SztPlFERpl0

  • In contradiction to this video, Sikorsky did NOT invent the helicopter . In fact, combat helicopters were used at sea flown from ships spotting submarines BEFORE Sikorsky even left the ground.

Please watch?v=64fgG2CnHn0 for the real history of the helicopter.

You will see troop carrying, medivac helicopter gunships capable of airlifting other whole aircraft and vehicles that flew BEFORE Sikorsky first lifted off in his primitive vs300.

  • Sikorski is typical Polish name!

There is another Sikorski during world war 2 : General Władysław Sikorski!

    He wasn't russian but Polish!

Look at on another famous Polish inventor of rockets who many trust that he was russian : Tsiolkowski, real writing is Ciolkowski!

Great russian inventors are like great german inventors : nothing else than russified Pole or germanized Pole!

  • @POWROTTATY

    1. No, you stupid polish kid, Tsiolkovsky and Sikorsky were Russians and not Poles.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky was half Polish and half Russian. Igor Sikorsky was also half Polish and half Russian.

  • @POWROTTATY

    2. Half doesn't mean polish! Sikorsky's father was Polish and was a Russian a nationalist, and Sikorsky was also a Russian patriot. Tsiolkovsky was also proud to be Russian and was a Soviet patriot. Names with "sky" are typical polish names - yes, but sometimes ethnical Russians have also names with ending on "sky".

  • @POWROTTATY

    3. So you want say, when for example an American of German, Polish or Russian origin would born in America, wouldn't know German, Polish or Russian, would have an American mentality and would be proud to be American - he is then Polish, Russian or German?

You really think that (only) ethnicity defines a Nation? You should read more books!

  • First in helicopters??? LIE!!!!!

Did you ruskys ever learned about Anton Flettner?

The first COMBAT HELICOPTER MEDEVAC was done with a GERMAN Focke-Achgelis, behind american lines in 1945.

    Do your homework... Check wikipedia.

  • @fonsecae

    So true.

Sikorsky was a ruthless plagiarist and pushy Publicist who lied constantly and tried to rewrite history. It was the Flettner helicopters that pioneered chopper rescue techniques long before Sikorsky got off the ground and Fa223 choppers that pioneered everything else that we take for granted today.

    watch?v=64fgG2CnHn0

  • @fonsecae wikipedia? wow...the most crappiest source of information.

  • igor Sikorsky was Patriot of Russia! He hoped that on a motherland all will calm down and he will return back ! But it did not happen.... Red terror governed on a motherland!!! «Grandee», «Russian knight», «Il'ya Muromec», created airplanes in 1912—1914, putting beginning of multi-engine aviation.

  • Not present a country poland. He lived in Russia and Sikorsky a vassal of Russian Tsar.

  • Poccua!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sikorsky was POLISH inventor! It is not Sikorkov dudes, it's Sikorski. :P

  • Everyone tries to claim the man for themselves. Well check this out : he was an American inventor, Ukraine born, son of a Polish father and Russian-Ukrainian mother. You solve this puzzle.

  • Oh come on people!!

He was POLISH! Look into his eyes. These are Polish eyes.

And by the way. There is no such thing as "Ukraine". There is only Russia and Poland.

  • What? Eeh. Hm. Al right. Whatever.

  • Sikorsky -- a great Russian inventor.

  • Sikorsky was from Ukraine. Not Russia.

  • Which was Russia back then.

  • People living there didn't see it that way. Only the people in power saw it as such. It's easy to consolidate history, but it's wrong and inaccurate. At that time, in the age of empires, Ukraine was actually divided between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires. But Sikorsky was born in Kyiv. Ukraine existed before Russia. Stop trying to take credit that does not belong to Russia. This is part of an ongoing cultural war between the two countries. However, it does not legitimize your claims.

  • I dont need a history lesson -_-' ... the Indians are American natives.... so what? no one credits them with anything dispite the fact that they were there before European powers took it all ...O_O... you have no point.

  • Thank you for your waste of a contribution.

  • If you dont like the fact that he is Russian, take up your complaint to the Kremlin or RT.

  • for fuck's sake - the man spoke Russian. He wrote about himself as being Russian - not Polish or Ukrainian. If he were - great. But he wasn't. Live with it

  • perfect reflection of modern day Ukrainian nationalism. The people who control government and media in Ukraine today try to rewrite history. There was no Ukraine back then. Sikorski was a Russian-pole born in the Ukraine...and never said he wasnt Russian. Hell... I was born in Kiev, Ukraine. so fucking what

  • You know where you were born, but you don't know where you come from.

Ukrainians were fighting for their independence from Russia for over 300 years. Just because someone is made a subject of a ruling power does not negate their national identity. That is something the powers that be can not take away from anyone. But they try.

  • Ukrainians are Russians, if you learn history then you know that first Russian city was Kiev.

  • Kyiv is not in Russia, it's in Ukraine. And Ukrainians are NOT Russians. Do Austrians belong to Germany? NO.

Typical Russian mentality, steal something that is not yours, claim it as your own and dispose of those that dispute you. Good luck with that.

History refutes your claims, but it is a point of ongoing debate between the two countries. Russians have their view, and Ukrainians have theirs. That is what makes us different.

  • funny thing is is that the people trying to rewrite history in Ukraine today are Western Ukrainians. Western Ukraine and Galicia have been part of the Austro-Hun. empire longer than they have Russian. Ethnically they aren't Ukrainian. Ukrainians live in Eastern and South Ukraine and have been a big part of Russian cultural development and vice versa. Im sure if Igor was still here he would never identify himself as a Ukrainian (disgusted by whats going on today).

  • As far as I know I was born ON the Ukraine, not in it. In any case it was part of the USSR back then, says so on my certificate.

  • So you're not even Russian. You are Soviet. A man without a country, dedicated to the ideals of Marx, polluted by the misinterpretations of Leninism.

The people attempting to restrict independent thought in Russia, like Medvedev and Putin, are choking the very freedoms of their people to the sound of thunderous applause. Enjoy your restricted lifestyle. It is the Russians that are revisionist historians. Why do they limit access of their archives to Westerners or even their coutnrymen?

  • i was born in the USSR... but that does not make me a communist. Quite the opposite actually. Fear not... Ukrainians will reunite with Russians again soon... as far as western Ukrainians/Hungarians go... they will lose the nation they hijacked and be proud of nothing... because historically they've done nothing. Russians and Ukrainians are really the same thing. There are other ethnic groups within Russia... you saying they arent Russian. Dumb and dangerous logic.

  • The only thing the Soviet Russians ever gave Ukrainians is a 70-year identity crisis. Your lack of knowledge demonstrates your Soviet education. You learn nothing, repeat your mistakes, and expect a different outcome. Sounds like insanity.

The reason nothing ever came from Ukraine was that in its entire history, there have been occupiers, but now in its brief independence, Ukrainians are beginning to be Ukrainian. Let them be. No one invited you and you have no right to it.

  • Ukraine always was Ukrainian...even when it was part of the Russian Empire. Russian is still the universal language for most Ukrainians. The fact that a very small minority of Ukrainians call for an alternative "ukrainian identity" and hate on Russia is bullshit. I was born, educated, and raised in the Ukraine. When government started to FORCE schools to teach in Ukrainian/nationalist propaganda myself and sev others (who could afford) transferred to private schools which were taught in Russian.

  • At least in Ukraine, you had the option of learning in Russian. There is NOT ONE Ukrainian-language school in Russia, except for Sunday schools. Apparently, Ukraine can accommodate the Russian-speaking populations, and even other minority languages, but the Russian government will not reciprocate for it's minority ethnic groups. Why?

Why should you worry about being forced to learn the native language of the country within which you reside? Adapt to the local culture, but keep your identity.

  • In Ukraine, there is no threat that the Russian language will disappear. Films, radio, television and the Internet are perfect forums for the propagation of the Russian language, as well as daily commerce, which in most large cities, is conducted in Russian. It is promoting the Ukrainian language that needs support. Unfortunately, many Ukrainians lack the skills, especially in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.

There are 3 million Ukrainians that live in Russia.

  • Negative on that. The current Ukrainian MINORITY government is trying to curtail and ban Russian in Every way possible... schools obviously teach in Ukrainian and Ukr. nationalism. Russian is discouraged in public and not allowed in official business. Russian TV channels are recently being banned in Ukraine for being what they call "anti-Ukrainian". bullshit. Crimea and Eastern Ukraine are especially under attack by "Ukrainization". Crimea for example refuses to listen to government now.

  • How is Russian discouraged in public? What cities, specifically? Ukrainianization, very similar to Russification, but Russification was enforced by the Russian/Soviet government at the point of a gun or a sword.

If you like Russia or the language so much, why not live there. If you can't speak the language or refuse to adapt to the Ukrainian way of life, it is your right to leave. Would your life be better in Russia?

  • Actually I don't live in Ukraine anymore (unfortunately because it is my home) for the oppression the current government puts the people through, but more importantly because I did not want to get drafted into the Ukr. army and be sent to some shithole, Iraq or Georgia (because I am against Georgia). Ukrainization happens mostly in Russian-speaking areas, west Ukraine is nationalistic. It happens in Crimea, Kharkov, Kiev, Odessa, Poltava, Zaporozhye (where I moved from Kiev)

  • and yes my life is better/more stable in Russia. Despite the worldwide economic meltdown, Russia is far better off than Ukraine is, a country on the brink of sociopolitical and economic collapse.

  • At least human rights, (you are a human, right?) are more guaranteed in Ukraine than in Russia. RT is a perfect example of "news" sponsored by the Kremlin. Enjoy your propaganda and your cowardice, Russia will protect you, but may sacrifice you at the same time. Especially if you're an investigative journalist. All of the cities you mentioned are heavily populated by Russophones, but it is a matter of them becoming nationally conscious. The nationally unconscious enjoy their "stability."

  • Ukraine has human rights? who told you that? those crooks on Human Rights Watch (same people that said only a few people died in Ossetia) or the Russian jews on wall street? How is RT propaganda? it critisizes the government and country very often, not all news are positive. Nationally conscious is bs, there never was such a Unified term as Ukrainian, the nation has many ethnic groups and was never a country, therefore has no history of it's own.

  • and secondly... how does this make me a coward :S??? powerful words but has nothing to do with Russia/Ukraine question.

  • Of course Austrians are Germans they speak it himself. I like Germans, their ideals are very similar to Russian. If Germany and Austria create one state it shall be right.

  • You Nazi MoFo, that was tried in 1938 under the Anschluss. Bad idea, but obviously Russians and Nazis never learn. Continue playing with your toys, child.

  • Child??? how old you oldmen?

  • @sinitskyd what? Igor Sikorsky was born in Kiev, Ukraine, he was polish.

  • @S4uryk actually, he was an American.

  • @sinitskyd exactly, but I meant his nationality

  • This human would create helicopters in Russia, but revolution spoiled all...

  • Life goes on. If you look on the modern market Russia has a huge share there. And enormous potential in heli-industry. The only thing is needed now is stability.

So I suppose in some point it's great that he left and it's nice that he found himself in the US. Russia has Mil and Kamov, not talking about plane's constructors.

  • Good report
