Gergiev must be taking this faster for a concert performance, rather than for the actual ballet. Doesn't seem that this tempo characterizes what is happening at this point of the ballet. It comes across as fury and anger rather than pompous arrogance and hautiness at a ball.

truly, there have only been few pieces like this, that convey such huge amounts of emotion through the use of music.

it's as if the composer wanted to make a musical cutaway the bitterness & hatred of the rival families in the play.plain tawesome.

theres 2 versions of s song, one which most orchestras will play is this version IE the 'fast' version, and then theres the actual ballet version which is slowed down to normal speed and to be honest i prefer the slower one gives the bass more time to develop and u can appreciate it more

I have to say that I saw a faster version, much like this, in October of '08 with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra with Bright Sheng conducting. It was quite an experience that I won't forget. I think both versions are definitely acceptable for different reasons. Personally, the faster version to me feels better.
