I have been listening to hip-hop since 1979, so I remember what it was called. It was called "hip-hop". The act of picking up a mic and rhyming was called "rapping". It wasn't called "rap music" until later. But to jump on somebody because they say "rap music" is just plain gay.

I know there was some "underground hip-hop" type people during the late 90's who wanted to make a distinction between rap and hip-hop and say stuff like "I don't listen to rap, I listen to hip-hop". I think either is legitimate. It was called hip-hop before it was called "rap music" though.
