I saw this series on tv in the US in the late 80's or early 90's and I loved it!!! Thank you for uploading this. It isn't available for our region on dvd.
Thank you for this! The original British series is so much better than the American remake. I always wondered what happened to it, never saw the series again until now.
I am hoping that Celia Ahern..pretty, vain, vapid chick lit writer, daughter of the gangster politician Bertie, will encounter her own she devil some day
This was another wonder from Britain that was coarsely perverted in a horrible US retelling. I'm an American and proud of it. But the music score alone for this ranks more worthy of an Oscar that anything since Forest Gump. It is Haunting.
I always WISHED they'd gone as far with the movie as they did with this tv series - yes its showing its age quite badly now (its 1986 so you'll have to forgive it) but the acting is still good. If only they'd shown the surgery in the movie because they cast it really well otherwise. I think they got a bit scared though - and gave it the 'cheesy ending'. If you can bear to sit through the ancient show here, which is worth watching, then you'll be rewarded.
I remember watching this with my mom when I was a kid. When I saw the one starring Rosanne Barr, I was really not impressed. It did not show what all the main character went though to get her husband back. It was a great story. The American version missed all of that. And wasn't there a relationship between her and the lady who was helping her??? That part was just touched on lightly.
I agree that the Americanization of this was HORRIFIC. But not because of Steep and Roseanne, they were the perfect cast. The writing and direction of the movie was what made it bad. This is a good story!
Thank you so much. I caught some of this way back then and never saw it again. Unfortunately, the US version did not satisfy at all . . . I have no idea why we feel we need to remake great British shows and films (Coupling, Lives & Loves of A She-Devil, Death at A Funeral, etc). The British version is inevitably better, and a US audience is perfectly capable of following the British versions.
Just wanted to let everyone know that Episode 2 of this series is now uploaded but you will have to do a manual search for "Life and Loves of a She Devil - Episode 2" to get at it since it was uploaded seperately.
i remember this...when did it come out about 85,...not sure i remember her eyes turnin red,i wet myself a little bit.....ps wheres arther daily im sure hes not best pleased with all this carry on!
This was a GREAT series! I never understood why it was not a greater sensation. I refused to see the American movie because I knew it could not possibly be as good as the series.
Thanks so much! I taped the entire series when it was repeated on A&E. Lost it somewhere! Loved it! Read the book. Loved it, too! I hope it'll be available on Netflix.
This was such a wonderful production; i've never forgotten it. I used to have the soundtrack (vinyl!) but lost it many years ago. I would love to replace it - the songs are haunting - and if anyone knows where I could find it, i'd be SO grateful! Thanks so much for posting the video.
This show came on A&E when I was in middle school. My parents wouldn't let me watch so I'd get up at 4 in the morning to see the overnight airing. Incredible show!
@MisterBlue24 i remember watching this with my mom after school. we loved it. it brings back a lot of great memories. i think i was in 6th or 7th grade. love the remake too. call me cheezey
@kgscorpio1374 You'd probably like the original book by Fay Weldon, if it's still around in print. Even though I haven't read it in years, the BBC did a pretty good job of staying true to the book.
I assume you taped this in the 1980s when it was shown on A&E? I have the 2005 UK DVD, which I've read was delayed because some of the background music couldn't be cleared with the rights holders. I'd thought the cheesy version of "Some Enchanted Evening" playing at the party might have been a replacement for the DVD, but apparently it's original.
Thank you for uploading. I saw the American version, but wanted to watch the British version, too. You have saved me much time and money searching for a copy. You're a gem. :)
To whomever posted this, bless you.I have looked for the British version for years...I only saw it when it was originally aired on cable (ages ago) and it has stuck with me ever since.I like the American version...but this one is so much more intense, and takes the story to extremes...
Is it Dennis Waterman singing "When you find your true love.... across a crowded room..." at 2.05. It sounds very much like him.

Fay Weldon's books were searing diatribes against men and the power they wield. The President's Child is also good.

This film version follows the novel pretty closely, maybe even less macabre and more amusing than the novel. Anyway, thanks for posting it.
