You're right. "To be better far than you are" makes no sense at all.  I'm afraid the singer is foolishly quoting Elvis Presley's version from the '70s. The King, as we all know now, was on a lot of drugs and sang quite a few songs "his own way." These were the misquoted words he sang.

Nice voice. Sung well. However: He had none of the feeling behind it that was in the musical/movie. Whenever I view this song clip from the movie, I am moved to a tear. I felt none of that here.

In '68 the country was so bitterly devided over the war and was in turmoil. 1st the TET offensive in Nam. Then LBJ was force out. Dr King and Bobby Kennedy were assasinated. Mass protest. Yet thru this I felt we needed to give South Vietnam a chance to be free. I'd been there before fighting as an infantryman. But talk was cheap. So I volunteered to go back in the army and back again to Nam again as a grunt. Unsure of my chances,yet singing this song to myself on the way over gave me solace.
