Great video! Thanks for the information on the different razors. I will pass this on to my son. I gave him an old double edge razor that his father had. He was really happy about his first use shaving with a vintage double edge razor rather than the cartridge or electric razor that he never liked. Nice to have a razor that your father and grandfather used. He said it was the best shave he ever had!
@cgasucks No, and it shouldn't be pulled out every time you clean the razor, but sometimes, if you have many razors and you want ro make a 34/11/37/38/39c etc break, you should clean it thoroughly. YOU CAN pull it out, YOU DON'T have to. But it is still a 3 piece razor! And I have a 34c, an 11c and a 38c, so I know what I'm talking about when I say "It's actually a 3 pc razor" ;)
@hallucinogen74 I don't get it, how is the Merkur 34c a 3 piece razor. i have one and there are only 2 pieces, unless i am missing a piece that i dont know about, lol.
Hey Geo, i have a Fatboy which is in pretty good condition, however i have notice a bit of wear on the handle. what is the best way to polish and get that shine back? i have followed all of your procedures which cleans well but not polish. thanks
Try some quality metal polish such as Flitz or other and rub it in with a soft cloth, then buff it out and see if you can retrieve any of that original shine.
Keep in mind if it doesn't clean up to your liking, you can always have it re-plated in Gold, Silver, or Rhodium!
Still very new to this type of shaving. That being said, how often should you change the blade in the Merkur HD? Also, how do you dispose of your blades? Can't wait for my equipment to arrive from your store!
I have the Parker 22R and it could use a cleaning, I have been using a DE Razor for about 4 months and couldn't enjoy shaving more. Thanks for the tips on cleaning.
@kantelier It's my first too. I am pleased. It has a decent weight to it, not aggressive so imo its good to learn on. I wish the handle were a big longer just so i can support it a bit more with my palm, but that isn't an issue, just a preference.
do you dip the whole safety razor in barbacide, and do you do it every time you clean it? i have a barbacide container or something i use for one for my straight razors i buy because i never know were they been lol! i only dip the metal of the straight razor in it but do you dip the whole safety razor in it? and should you do that with the straight razors too or just the safety razor?
If a razor was purchased used, soak it for a 1/2 hour or so in a Barbicide solution.
Usually, it's OK to drop the whole safety razor in the solution for a bit.
Exercise caution on your straight razors, depending on the material of the scales, they might be damaged by soaking in Barbicide or alcohol for too long.
Soak the blade portion only in a glass jar or cup, allow the handle to sit above the solution.
Concentrate on the blade areas because that's what contacts your face.
It might be considered a bit obsessive, but I like to take proper care of my toys....
That being said, I routinely rinse the razor under hot, then cold streaming water after each use, remove the blade, towel dry both and set them aside to dry in the open.
This will prohibit any residue/rust from forming.
I generally will give the razor a thorough soap and brush cleaning and drying when I replace the blade on it.
Geo: I ve just got my HD and i ve got Castle Forbes, Tayor creams, i can go against the grain on my 3rd pass except near my mouth, especially at moustach area. It just feels the blade(merkur) cant cut it really well here, it feels like the blade is stucking into my whiskers, lots of pulling and tugging. Any ideal?
Keep in mind that it takes about 30 days for your face to become totally accustomed to any new shaving method.
Watch my vid shaving with a Merkur HD. I do a 3-pass shave: 1) with the grain, then 2) across the grain (ear to nose), and finally 3)across the grain (nose to ear).
If you can get a nice smooth shave that way, then just stick with that.
Sometimes the upper lip area is super-sensitive and becomes irritated easily.
I've got the Merkur HD, can't deal with the thing. It's too damn aggressive, even when I apply no pressure I still get nicks and it catches on the hair on my neck constantly lol
nice job

how often should this be done?

@rvenom800
I disassemble and clean my Safety Razors after a couple of weeks of regular daily use.
If you start to see some shaving cream buildup and hazing.... it's time to restore them to their original brilliance.

Excellent advice, man!
Couple of questions:
Can I dip my Parker shavette in the Barbicide glass, say, like leave it overnight?
Won't warp or dull the disposable blade? Thanks.

thanks for that
u think it also ok if i insolate them or not?
kaorine333 8 months ago
@kaorine333
Thanks!
You can let them dry in the sun, not too hot of course....and not for too long either.
Actually the best place to store the straights is in your sock drawer.
Away from the bathroom moisture and outside air humidity.

I can get 4-6 shaves out of a new Feather blade.
As always, YMMV, because blade performance will vary depending upon your beard type, face prep, cream used, etc.
Let me know how it works out for you!

Would this be a good way to clean up a vintage razor? If not, what other steps should be taken?
lerp85 11 months ago
@lerp85
Yes,
You can also try a dab of metal polish on fine steel wool to remove any light rust and bring some of the shine back if it's become dull.
Good luck!

Which is about every 5-7 shaves.
Hope that helps!

Proraso is good stuff! Been around since the 1920's I believe...
Provides a nice tingly, menthol-eucalyptus sensation on the face while shaving.
Enjoy!

Geo, I get a lot of residue on my blades sometimes. How would you suggest that I clean them?
tehfear 1 year ago
@tehfear
The double edge blades are super-sharp and dangerous. I would not recommend trying to clean them by hand.
I just run it under a forceful stream of hot water after each use (while it's still loaded in the razor) and that does the job nicely.
Good Luck,
Geo.

@0gami1tto
Don't give up on the HD just yet...
Try a different blade, which could be the problem...
View my videos on Best Lather & Face Prep for a shave & apply those techniques.
Also make sure that you have a nice, slick, thick shaving cream (like Taylor of Old Bond) which is one of my all-time favorites.
I'm sure you can get a nice shave out of it.
Oh, one other thing, when you load the blade, make sure it is centered evenly on both sides.
Hope all this helps you!
Best Regards,
Geo.
