This probably more realistic to life. Strong men, fighting men don`t look like they`ve ben on steroids. Seen a modern day soldier? Do they ever look like muscle bound weight lifters? No. Of Course, they do in the movies.

@HerrCollier so that when they were cut, it would LOOK bloody, messy and lethal, but was really just a flesh wound (still nothing to make fun of and needed treatment, but not nearly as lethal as you'd think it was back then). Gladiators were all about show, essentially the "pro wrestlers" of their day...with the actual chance of death constantly there, instead of safety measures always being the priority. Keep in mind--they were financial investments. One dies, it costs cash to replace.

The idea that Gladiators were fat is based off of some historians examination of what is believed to be the diet they ate. Historians are not experts on the human body or diets of different athletes. Today there is evidence that this isn't true especially considering the carvings of Gladiators that show muscular men fighting.
