You can...and if you use wifi with a pay as you go plan or something (bought the phone second hand and used my old sim) then you can avoid paying for the 3g network, but only get service in hotspots.

Unlocking is when you can use any carrier on the iPhone. Normally, depending on what country you are from, it is locked to a specific carrier, O2-UK, AT&T. If you unlock the device, you can use any carrier, for example if it was locked to AT&T, you unlock it then you can use it on T-Mobile etc.

you changed the boot logos witch make iphone slower. If you have in iphone only apps like cycorder or other important program iphone should boot up i about 40 sec.
