i do the same spartan technique, but instead of wimpy archers i bring in the big guns, heavy onagers. that way when the enemy army clogs their side of the bridge, flaming balls of stone rain down and kill around 3/4ths of the enemy army.

The archer set up is not optimal. You're gonna want to position those archers as close to the water as possible on both sides of the bridge. This way you will be shooting them from the side and not the front which will cut them down dramatically easier.

actually he was also loosing men because of friendly fire... many of the arrows were hitting the backs of the Spartans I believe. It's hard that 16 Spartans will die in such a condition against low-armored units.

I also found it's better to position archers with a narrow front and deep ranks. The archer unit fires as a group, so once the enemy is in range of the first archers, they're in range for all archers. So, it's important to ensure the front row of archers for all groups are in range for the battle.

ya but with the upkeep cost and rediculous recruitment cost of mercenaries you would probally go into debt and you would also need lots of generals to recruit a sufficient amount of mercenaries

If i saw spartans blocking off a bridge i would just get macedonians with longer spears and slaughter them. Macedonians would take no casualties from it and then the greek archers would be unprotected for Macedon's cavalry charge. RTW makes spartans suck.

every faction has units from its peak in time... the macedon faction was later time period by 100 years when king Phillipos created longer spears... if he had been born into spartan royalty, i bet he would have done the same then... so it just means that the macedon greek city state had a higher peak than the greeks because they were stronger, later... if it as same time period as when the battle of Thermopylae happened the spartan hoplites would totally kick every singe faction combined asses

Hm.. just one thing; in this battle u shouldnt use flaming arrows. on regular infantry it makes no difference. besides maybe frightening them a bit more. but its better for ur archers if they make the egypts tight up instead of flee quick

The Spartan would employ Helot Slaves to be archers btw.

one time when i was plaing as the greeks the egypts and british became alies and together coverd 1/2 the map... i came down to me vs them and i was gettign screwd on all sides... i was playign on very hard....

i just use all archers to kill my enemies. it was fun to "block out the sun" with thousands of arrows raining down overhead.
