What I love most about the twins's story it's that it teachers you, in a sadistically psychotic way, that life is unfair. No matter how much you wish it wasn't. Beautiful, underrated.
My solution: Brainwash the twins to learn that the world is a nice place through torture. It would have satisfied Hotel Moscow's wrath and help teach the twins a valuable lesson.

Glad to see that i am not the only one who thinks that. If they had survived, black lagoon maybe would be one of my favourite animes, but after they died i dropped the anime .
You watched this far and stopped because there was child death. If you honestly can't handle that, I sympathize, but A, you don't deserve to watch the anime in the first place, and B, I don't see how you made it this far in the series. The real world ain't always pretty and this anime capitalizes on it, to criticize or deny it its graphic maturity and realistic storytelling (Sorry they weren't vampires) is ridiculous. Their deaths added to the series.
The Bloodsport Fairytale arc told me EXACTLY what series I was watching. At first, this just felt like am odern Cowboy Bebop. But Hansel and Gretel are what break this series apart. This isn't the real world, but it's not far from it. Bad things happen. They weren't real vampires, they were demented children, they wouldn't get a happy ending. Hell, I knew I had to keep watching, I'd be disgracing the work of the author itself if I didn't. I guess you don't like the same things I do...
...but I at least recommend you finish the series and do it justice. The story doesn't get as bloody as that at least until Season 3 and you can finish what you started. ^_^

I mean honestly, what did you think the series was leading to when you saw all those Nazis kill themselves underwater? When you saw the "cowboy" get himself killed? When Rock nearly got himself shot by Revy and went through that major character fortification? When Rock realized "being a criminal is more freeing than being a civilian"? Or when Revy shared her views on the world? Were you expecting happiness?

@TheKuroshikyo I know right... I think watching anime this long has finally desensitized me to fictionalized violence. I mean, I don't get kicks out of seeing Hansel & Gretel murdered, but watching Hellsing/Gungrave/Gurren Lagann/and Trigun; somehow not even fictional child death bothers me anymore, it just adds to the series maturity and probably my addiction to watching the series itself because then I know that "anyone can die".

I'm glad they are dead. I know it sounds harsh, but the torment they went through was irreversable and they would've continued to kill many people if they were kept alive. I did cry when they died but thats the way it has to be.

One of about a dozen truly sad anime bits I've seen, most are depressing but few make it to my truly sad category. But not enough to make it to epic sadness which things like grave of the fireflies and a dog named Flanders reside in movies that let you watch their suffering before the end.

I believe the title of MOST AWESOME CHARACTER belongs to either Mr. Chang, Ginji, or Revy. And possibly Roberta in Season 3 for many good reasons.
Also, unless you're exaggerating, if you're going to ragequit an anime because someone died, you might as well stick to Naruto where everybody who died in one arc magically gets brought to life. And DBZ where there's a plot macguffin specifically for that. And One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho where nobody dies.
For me, the twins were the most awesome characters of the series and they belong to my favourite anime charaters in general , if you dont think so we maybe think different about what an awesome character has to be. However, i have no problem with violent animes in general ( btw my favourite anime is Elfen Lied) and i think its natural to hate the anime series where two of your favourite anime characters die horribl

The things she went through would have a permanent effect of her, but i do believe that she could change. if someone tried she could have her eyes opened to see the world in a different way.
I'm re-watching the series and just finished this ep. It's so, so sad. I'm kind of relieved they died, tbh. I mean, they would have never stopped killing. It's the only way of life they knew. At least in death they don't have to kill anymore. They're free to live under blue skies and open spaces together forever. They'll no longer be locked up, abused, and made to do heinous things. They're finally free. Gosh, that ep is just so sad. My heart hurts just thinking of what they were put through.
Personally I think it's retard Balalaika killed those kids. I know they were killing people, but she easily could have captured them. They were mutilated so badly and never shown any love, only to be trampled on in the end. If I were Rock, I would have gotten back at Balalaika and hotel moscow for what they did. I think the way Balalaika handled it was the best way, because no matter how sad that episode was it showed everyone that in a world of war NO ONE is safe. If you fight with guns expect to get shot. @Rx2D this is something i really like about black lagoon, the grey morality and multi-faceted ways wich evokes different kinds of opinion and reflections. i think the torture balalaika inflicted on hansel was much more about the spetsnaz than random violence of her part. since balalaika ties with her troop is a relationship of deep loyalty ever since the soviet war, and the twins kidnapped and tortured to death one of them...it´s not an out of place reaction of her part.
@Rx2D, it simply adds to her character [Balalaika (during the Yakuza arc): "I'm only interested in how much I can dance in the pit of hell when it's all over."] that she is a cruel person. If Rock did anything (and that would defeat the symbolism of the entire arc btw) it would completely be out-of-character and would also wreck the series. Smart men don't charge into hell wanting to die, they charge in with a hand grenade and the Blades of Chaos.

Balalaika has more of a conscience than they do. I'm not sure if you know but the AK-74U (that's what Balalaika's soldiers use) is a shortened paratrooper version of the AK-74. The full length AK can't hit shit from a distance. So a shortened varient would make it even harder. Not to mention they weren't aiming to kill them.

@sorrow413 I think there is only the part within the episode itself, where the last twin was singing it on the boat. But a real "one-person-is-singing" version isn't out as far as I know.

I always figured the one at the end of the episode talking to Rock was the girl, because after she gives him her "present", he still continues referring to her as "her". That's what I thought of it anyway.

Then he/she pulled up her/his skirt and showed him whats beneath, then Rock got sick and had to throw up. Does the anime say what made Rock sick? I'm guessing he/she was tortured badly down there....

Hm, I thought it was fine the way they died. I thought it really fit the mood and message of the show. Living life the way the characters do is a sad and depressing trip, and I thought it was a significant, but fitting way to force Rock into realizing this. It was sad, sure, but a fitting end to a great story arc. At least I think so.

The Bloodsport Fairytale arc told me EXACTLY what series I was watching. At first, this just felt like am odern Cowboy Bebop. But Hansel and Gretel are what break this series apart. This isn't the real world, but it's not far from it. Bad things happen. They weren't real vampires, they were demented children, they wouldn't get a happy ending. Hell, I knew I had to keep watching, I'd be disgracing the work of the author itself if I didn't. I guess you don't like the same things I do...

I mean honestly, what did you think the series was leading to when you saw all those Nazis kill themselves underwater? When you saw the "cowboy" get himself killed? When Rock nearly got himself shot by Revy and went through that major character fortification? When Rock realized "being a criminal is more freeing than being a civilian"? Or when Revy shared her views on the world? Were you expecting happiness?

I mean, I don't get kicks out of seeing Hansel & Gretel murdered, but watching Hellsing/Gungrave/Gurren Lagann/and Trigun; somehow not even fictional child death bothers me anymore, it just adds to the series maturity and probably my addiction to watching the series itself because then I know that "anyone can die".

I'm glad they are dead. I know it sounds harsh, but the torment they went through was irreversable and they would've continued to kill many people if they were kept alive. I did cry when they died but thats the way it has to be.

Sociopaths rarely ever come to their senses. I bet the only reason you're thinking this way is because they're children. Many adults today have had a childhood similar to theirs and they are shown no remorse when they're punished for killing people. Why should hansel and gretel be any different?

I believe the title of MOST AWESOME CHARACTER belongs to either Mr. Chang, Ginji, or Revy. And possibly Roberta in Season 3 for many good reasons.
Also, unless you're exaggerating, if you're going to ragequit an anime because someone died, you might as well stick to Naruto where everybody who died in one arc magically gets brought to life. And DBZ where there's a plot macguffin specifically for that. And One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho where nobody dies.

The things she went through would have a permanent effect of her, but i do believe that she could change. if someone tried she could have her eyes opened to see the world in a different way.

I'm re-watching the series and just finished this ep. It's so, so sad. I'm kind of relieved they died, tbh. I mean, they would have never stopped killing. It's the only way of life they knew. At least in death they don't have to kill anymore. They're free to live under blue skies and open spaces together forever. They'll no longer be locked up, abused, and made to do heinous things. They're finally free. Gosh, that ep is just so sad. My heart hurts just thinking of what they were put through.

Personally I think it's retard Balalaika killed those kids. I know they were killing people, but she easily could have captured them. They were mutilated so badly and never shown any love, only to be trampled on in the end. If I were Rock, I would have gotten back at Balalaika and hotel moscow for what they did. I think the way Balalaika handled it was the best way, because no matter how sad that episode was it showed everyone that in a world of war NO ONE is safe. If you fight with guns expect to get shot. But I did cry when Sorameya got a headshot from behind that just ruined my day.

@Rx2D this is something i really like about black lagoon, the grey morality and multi-faceted ways wich evokes different kinds of opinion and reflections. i think the torture balalaika inflicted on hansel was much more about the spetsnaz than random violence of her part. since balalaika ties with her troop is a relationship of deep loyalty ever since the soviet war, and the twins kidnapped and tortured to death one of them...it´s not an out of place reaction of her part.

If Rock did anything (and that would defeat the symbolism of the entire arc btw) it would completely be out-of-character and would also wreck the series. The characters are superhuman, it's vague, but hell, Rock shows it when Revy first takes out a bunch of boats on the sea by LEAPING 20 or more feet in the air. Have you never seen a John Woo film, Furi Kuri, Gurren Lagann, or Cowboy Bebop? Anime physics take precedence over regular physics, it's not about genius scripting or realism (all the time_/

Balalaika has more of a conscience than they do. I'm not sure if you know but the AK-74U (that's what Balalaika's soldiers use) is a shortened paratrooper version of the AK-74. The full length AK can't hit shit from a distance. So a shortened varient would make it even harder. Not to mention they weren't aiming to kill them.

when the twins are changed after they tortured the Russian guy, Gretel was wearing a shift and it looked like she had, umm, developing breasts. She switched to Hansel and if they didn't switch back, the twin who 'rewarded' Rock was the boy.

Then he/she pulled up her/his skirt and showed him whats beneath, then Rock got sick and had to throw up. Does the anime say what made Rock sick? I'm guessing he/she was tortured badly down there....

Hm, I thought it was fine the way they died. I thought it really fit the mood and message of the show. Living life the way the characters do is a sad and depressing trip, and I thought it was a significant, but fitting way to force Rock into realizing this. It was sad, sure, but a fitting end to a great story arc. At least I think so.

the song was also used again in the yakuza arc (season 2 episode 21 Two Father's Little Soldier Girls) it starts around 3 : 35 into the episode it was when ballika was remembering the past
