  • This kind of locomotion is the only thing that could have made the Half-Life 2 Striders more awesome and more creepy. Although I did find the Hunter "horse gallop" creepy.

If this were a real alien being, I guess it would have to have eyes in all directions so it could always see in front of it every time it took a step, because otherwise its eyes would keep getting turned around. Also its choice of direction is limited.

  • GO HALF LIFE....YEAH

  • Does it sound like a whale?

  • technology is going to kill us all!

  • from this video i learned a realy valuable lesson

episode 3 of half life 2 will have hunter, ministriders, and striders drop ships and cansiders

    and headcrab cansiders too

  • YEAH HALF LIFE 2!!

  • Cool job at creating a real Half Life strider, but you couldn't ride in it like a walking vehicle since the cabin flips upside-down with every other steep.

  • I love how they "forget" to mention that the tripods in Half-Life are also known as Striders

  • BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRURRRR!

  • problem with this design is you cant attach lasers to it. i think theres some promise as a mars rover though.........if you could work out going over rocks.

  • why cant we just use a rc car sure this is much more sneeky!

  • But the question is, Will it blend

  • The strider in half-life 2 is not an alien it is a combine synth. If you want to borrow from a combine soldier. If you want to borrow a smaller one like a hunter or try to borrow flying things like gunship and dropship

  • the strider in half-life 2 isn't an alien its a combine synth talk to a combine soldier to borrow a strider if you want to borrow a gunship or a dropship.

  • Is it just coincidence that this thing is also named Strider, is a robot, and has three legs like the Strider in Half-Life? Or did they just play Half-Life and decided to be the Combine in real life?

  • now make it bigger, give it a brain, a cannon, and a warp cannon.

now for us, we need DOG.

  • Guys, get your RPGs ready.

  • The half life strider IS A LIVING GODDAMN thing

  • dont give it a mind of its own

  • dont make it any bigger!!! or else... ur gonna have a problem

  • OMG Striders are real! I cant wait to see how cool the cannon will be!

  • When he shot it for that one thing, it looked like a man made headcrab.

  • congratulations for the video

  • lol, one I love how its somehow hip to make acyronyms in engineering that are completely useless but spell something cool. Second that looks like an akward form of locomotion that is going to be highly sensitive to instability, regardless of its energy efficiency. Third its clearly inspired by stuff like hl2, minority report, war of the world etc. But I mean its a WIP.

  • Gordon help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Now start making Magnusson Devices...

  • I agree, hahahaha, before it gets out of control, Freeman must call

  • Bullshit Inspired by Stars Wars; they take ideas from others and then do not know what to do with...

  • The Half Life's Strider isn't an Alien Robot!! they are wrong!!!!

  • The Half Life's Strider isn't an Alien Robot!! the are wrong!!!!

  • "alien robot from the game half life 2"

Boy what a bunch of asses, not even mentioning how hl2 calls the "robots" strider's as well.

  • The Strider from Half-Life is alive, just like the Hunters and Combine Dropship.

  • ok now we just need to research plasma weapons and place some on a big size one of these

  • I just hope they don't make a HUNTER!

  • STRIDER!!!!!

looks interesting, however, doesnt that walk cycle makes it difficult to traverse unstable terrain?

  • ive been experimenting and i am very close to having a tripod just like in half life 2

  • Same name as half life. same design/ Not original concept, Copyright Infringment

  • u notice the one from half life 2 have the same name expect the part that those are living creatures

  • there part robot

  • the one robot part of them is the turret other than that there living creatures from xen that the combine learned to control

  • ya i know

  • Wait.. she said its gonna have a camera? On its back? He swings his back around 180 degrees! Its gonna turn upside down!!

  • Looks like it would be extremely annoying to get it to walk in a straight line.

  • GET YOUR CROWBARS OUT, MATES! IT's GONNA GET ROUGH IN HERE!

  • you know it doesnt have to be so complicated who cares how it walks besides if it walked like that then the person watching though the cam on it would have to wait for it to turn its body

  • Wow way to knock of of tons of movies and games....Although i guess that's the way people are take something good and ruin it.

lol what a bad idea for a robot it cant even attack!

  • Are all robots supposed to be war machines?

This was meant for sturdy surveillance.

  • And you call it Strider, huh? This robot don't deserve to be called "Strider". Моё такое мнение. Пойду дальше играть в ХЛ 2 ^^

  • its also called fail robot

  • GAY! no srsly, the movement -_- omfg that thing would fall in real life for sure xD

  • the striders in hl2 move 1000000 times better!

  • Yeah, i dont see why they couldn't use that style, it seems alot sturdier

  • Hurr. The whole point of this is the different type of locomotion. Durr.

  • hl2 civs are right combines realy PUT BABIES IN STRIDERS

  • of course strider from HL2 doesnt move like tripedal giant shown in the video cuz its not robot its a creature combined with cyborg technology, so it can move in that way like we saw in game

  • OH MY GOD.

    GORDON, GRAB YOUR CROWBAR!

  • lol

  • god you'd think it would be from MIT in like, Australia!

  • im gay

  • im the box. "Leave me alone person I don't know you!"

  • The strider in hl2 isn't a robot!, in Hl2 ep2 dog (cool little hero) Rips a brain out of it's head, proving it is organic

  • first: i think that was some sort of easter egg and second: i think they are some sort of cyborg i mean.. a pulse cannon?

  • your right is was a cyborg, but the strider brain isn't an easter egg, if you look at the right place in the citidel in halflife 2 you can see stalkers working on the armor the the strider fidgets like an annoyed impatient kid.

  • you have a good concept the only problem is when you let the third leg go forward it might make the back legs lose balance or the front leg wont turn and it will fall and youll need motors and locking mechanisms in each small joint

  • But the moving leg is still on the ground, sliding. With enough force, that could apply as a third support even through the motion.

  • yeah but if that is the case it would move even slower and i mean if it were to move its two front legs then its back it would be more productive

  • This movement does save a lot of energy however. I was thinking it would be useful for extraterrestrial exploration, with a little work of course.

  • STRIDER! gunna put a pulse cannon on it?

  • put a pulse gun and strider cannon on it and ill like it.

  • STRIIIDDDER!

  • NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO, its hard enough to defete them in the game, i cant do it anymore, not in real life

  • GET THE MAGNUSSONS!!!

  • half life 2 rocks

  • Half life 2 ftw

  • this is the greatest tripedal sex cannon EVER

  • that kinda sucks you guys should make small version of strider like in half life 2 or in war of the worlds

  • Lawl, if that has tall antennae attached to the top, when it walks, KER-CRUNCH

And wheres the pulse gun and singularity cannon D:

  • If the middle is heavy or it must not be rotated, this design will not work.

But this might be usefull for the useless robots that carry nothing.

    btw why not use wheels?

  • Because wheels use a lot of energy.Imagine a wheel rotating and again imagine a leg rotating.Which needs more angles to spin? ^_^

  • honestly who cares and needs to know this:p

  • also a major flaw how does this strider walk straight? anyway the plazmatic strider was created in the 70's and was planned in the 1920's you fuckers its also more effecient and in 2007 they created a 40ft one with guns(not a laser, miniturazation of lasers will be finished in 2009)and is allready in the bieng mass produced (2000 by the end of the year)and in 2020 they plan to use organic computaion to advance proccessing from thier current state enabling them to actually have brains!

  • first of all rtard (person who made this video) just becuase yOUR strider doesn't move like that doesn't mean it cant infact that means another BETTER ROBOT could because there is nothing that dictates it cant also the strider in half life is a cyborgnetic organisim not a robot

  • looks like someone plays a little too much half life 2

  • this was invented long before half-life came out (read the comment by snbv5real)....

  • lol @ 3:31!

  • But where's the "penis cannon"?

  • Where oh where is the penis cannon!

  • Funny how it has exactly the same name as the HL2 Strider.

    Sounds like you just made

  • No, that's not funny at all.

  • It's not a joke , dumbass.

    Heck , Self-excited doesn't make sense.

    Self-powered, yes.

  • I must say, the concept of a 2+ leg-based robot would be much better with 4 legs, each jointed. Each leg could raise itself, still supported by the other 3 legs, plant itself in the direction it wants to go, and then the next leg follows suite. It would be slower, but it would also eliminate the possibility of leg degeneration, for the current 3-leg model involves a leg "dragging" itself across the surface it is walking on. A four-legged model could also roam in precise directions.

  • haha your building striders well im gunna build what i call a magnession device, you will only get it if u play half life im gunna go gordan freeman style on ur asses lol

  • it's spelled magnusson

  • Omg, they are just ruining the Idea of HL2.

    Like we care.

I only care about is it a good and high quality game...

  • The strider in hl2 moves like that because it has a mind of his own(robot+brain)and because it comes from a high technology advanced race(combine). As for the "penis cannon"(known as anti-matter cannon)it CAN be possible, but the technology available now isn't enough for this.Well it isn't that possible because the anti-matter cannon is dark energy(that when collides with organic matter it turns it into dark energy and then disinegrates.

  • Agreeded.

if area 51 was real maybe the military can find some new guns for thier tanks. or they can work on that strider. 50-100 years of research can maybe great that walking fortress I was talking about before. if the iraq war will be going for over 50-100 years (the chance of that is like 2%) after 100 years or 50 the iraq soldiers should be dead if that strider was to be finished and deployed in iraq

  • HL2 strider is cooler

  • @AchiK2007 you r right!!! hl2 stirder can do what that robot can't

  • can that withstand rocket launchers?

  • The animation at 1:41 was really cool.

  • wow interesting information

  • WOW with all this strider info we humens couid mange to make a real strider in our wordl... lol xD

  • This already has been made. look up more videos on strider. There's one that actually shows the strider moving and another that shows how the joints work.

  • very clever

  • sorry for my spelling in the last post but I have to add this:

What I meant by 3 legged walking fortress. is that it can be in-larged, a SMG added, and alot of armor and you've got a thing that can be used for war.

  • NOO BAD IDEA NO NO NO AND DONT SAY HIGH POWER LASER EITHER AND u thought tanks were bad

  • Nice work.

I think it's better then war of the worlds one and the Hl2 one.

Because for example if Gordon attacks it with a rocket from behind is can just "flip" and attack him back.

and for the lunching thing. too bad the combine were to dumb enough to make a giant luncher that launches does strider's to certain points in City 17.

Also if in-larged can more science can be applied to it and a little SMG here and a alot of armor there and you got a 3 legged walking fortress.

  • @combinemaster The HL2 strider is too big to be launched. It would be severely damaged by it's own weight on impact

  • @HugoLuman I guess what stays in HL2 stays in HL2 :P

  • Fair enough, but how does it walk in a straight line, or turn? I think a more practical robot would have the body upright at all times and be able to turn on the spot. And why would you need to launch this thing? As soon as you put a camera on it and move, your going to be facing the wrong way and upside down.

  • If only those ones from Half-Life moved like this, they'd be a lot cooler. That disruptor laser would totally kick ass.

  • Thinking about it, this is the only viable way a mechanical, 3-legged creature could move... The HL2 strider would have to push off the leg it wants to move first, to shift its weight to the other 2 legs, and then quickly swing the leg that is not touching the floor towards its target. The logistics would be a NIGHTMARE. Well done for designing such an interesting piece of machinery! :)

  • I think it is possible for it to walk with out fliping the body.

The strider could, like in HL2, lean forward as it puts it's back leg infront of it, and the front legs curve around. The strider then moves is front legs forward so he can do it again. If a machiene could do this, then we could put a gun on it as the plat form wouyld stay the same way up.

  • Yeah yeah! we get it. It's a symmetric way of moving, or atleast it looks very symmetrical with the platform. It dosen't move like in the games but how could they move like this in the game with a huge weapon platform?

Either way I love this movie since it got a nice way of explaining the basic movements - but in a relationship to games I don't care about this moviet ^^. But anyhow keep up the nice work.

  • Put a turret on it!

  • WERD

  • well if thats the real way that a tripod based leg design works than i guess that i now hate the Tripod method. But i dont cause i know for a fact that the tripods on HL2 and WoTW do walk lke they are shown so these people can F*** off!!!

  • When you think about it, this Strider has a flat body that's meant to be flipped upside down, something that HL2's Strider does not have.

  • oh yeah, and the Strider from hl2 is also self conscious, so it can think for itself and process information. think I'm stupid, stand on one leg and hop to your refrigerator then hop back, robots today can't do that as well as you because they cant process information and adapt to environments as fast as an organic self conscious creature such as yourself or the Striders from hl2, since striders have three legs instead of two they would be able to do more complex movements then your would.

  • Striders are also COMBINE machinery. So they are COMBINED with a creature that can actually think. So instead of using a flow chart to move the strider is an animal still.... When you lose a leg and have to walk with crutches, it doesn't exactly seem possible in a robot, but you and your brain can manipulate the metal rods, so you can balance it and walk.

So to make a real HL2 Strider, we need a brain.

  • Good point that, but I could've sworn that the hl2 strider's were animalistic in ways.

Good vid I really enjoyed it!

  • i would agree do to the fact i play it on xbox non stop, The striders to animate in a fairly realistic self conscious way, eg when a target is low it would lower its self down by rocking side to side.

any way a robot at this time could not do that as it would not beable to adapt to any changes like we can.

But if we had that technology then tripod movement might be possible as demonstrated in half life 2

  • How Is it Impossible for the Hl2 combine strider to move like it does?

  • The animators have just played with the gravity.

But I would like to see the Strider i HL move like that xD

  • ithink a tripod could walk like the combine strider.... it doesent seem impossible

  • The striders in half-life 2 are living creatures augmented with alien machinery.

  • That's true. They are biomechanical robots.

  • wow, i wouldn't be surprised to see this design incorporated into some of the machines on the next Mars mission or something of similar significance. Nice work you guys!

  • it is not impossible for the strider from half life 2 to move like it does in the game in real life, it sort of jumps with the leg it wants to move, then catches the fall just a bit longer forward. though it would require a shitload of technology to create a replica, since the "penis cannon" thing is not really possible...yet... and the flexible metal thing (seen if you go close to where the legs and guns are attached) isnt somethin you just create like really quick

  • emmm.... but if it had a gun, under or on the body, that`d be damn hard for it to aim...

  • I recognize this as a very fine advancment in robotics, but it was inspired by science fiction, right? Anyway, it is looking amazing.

  • rotfl, a man has 2 legs and it's enough, simple is best

  • You're a total noob. GTFO my internets.

  • half life, war of worlds and other's never take into account real word physics. so to compare this too half life is ludicrous. I have a few friends that will build this from Lego. great design and should prove to be very interesting to do. Great work whom ever did this and nice to see them show it to all. many kids that aspire to be designers will be inspired by this.

  • wow it shows how many retards who cant be serious in the world. from all of the 20 comments so far 15 of them talked about the half-life 2 strider.

  • yea half-life is too popular

  • yay! my dads gona use this!

  • that from half life is NOT alien!

  • these people got the idea from half-life 2

  • their just copying half-life 2's strider...which is way better, cause its got guns and make sweet noises!!!!!!!!!

  • YES TOTAL AGREE

  • lol at 3:40 robot kiked gis balls

  • half life 2 strider is cooler

  • half life strider is better

  • half life 2 =D

  • What software is the dynamics simulated in? Maya? Is motion data for the walk available?

  • Great locomotion idea, but the swinging leg could come in contact with protruding terrain, knocking it off balance.

  • The next step is path planing for rough terrain. We have published a paper on that and will be implementing it soon on STriDER 2.1.

  • Poor thing seems perpetually drunk, unable to walk in a straight line. I'll give it a few years and let you work out the kinks.

  • The zig-zag motion is for the foot step locations, just like a human being walking on 2 feet. The body sways a bit, but does walk in a relativley straight line.

  • And if it falls down?

  • One student is working on standing up strategies - we have 4 ways of making it stand up, including one utilizing a dynamic whipping motion of one of it's legs.

  • Cool, interesting.

  • Ohly shit!

Someone Call Gordon freeman, HG Wells, Tom cruise! aargh!

  • VTECH IS KICKING IN YO

  • ... smooth looks nlike a new artificial intelligence robot 4 kids, but it more than that

  • That's pretty awesome.

  • Doesn't appear to have much load bearing capabilities, and the whole issue of the body rotating would have some obvious issues. However this would certainly be a very energy conservative method of transport combined with stability.

  • STriDER is being developed not for manipulation tasks or for carrying loads. It is a robot for deplying sensors. Body rotation causes some issues (for design) but nothing serious for usage.

  • Better make it miniature Gordon, then. That little bastard could crush a hedgehog, much less a crowbar-wielding mute.

  • Oh god what have you done? Someone scramble Gordon Freeman!
