Okay, I'm going to raise a lot of ire but I can take it. Bonham is a drummer's drummer. There are drummers who appeal to fellow drummers then there are drummers who appeal to the masses like Steve Moore or.... he who should not be mentioned in the same paragraph as Mr. Bonham. His initials are TL. He flips upside down and rides roller coasters and crap. Drummers say, "Holy shit!" Non-drummers say, "Play All of My Love!" By the way, I watched this and said, "Holy shit!"

It's strange that the studio version of this was pretty crap . He really gives it everything here - he was only 21! Incredible, but I think his excesses (drinking) caught up with him quickly as this is, by far, the best version of Moby Dick I've seen/heard him do. Others I've heard can get pretty tedius.

One must admit, John Bonham was a great drummer. Obviously! I must say that he has come the closest to Buddy Rich as far as virtuosity level of all drummers I have heard. Certainly, in the rock genre, no one tops John Bonham at least those drummers I have heard.

I don't think John is better or worse - they are just different, with different styles and focus in their music. John is has more blues & straight rock influences, while Neil is more symphonic, with jazz influences. Both sound great in their respective spheres - put John in Rush, and it Rush's music would lose something - and vice-versa.

John Bonham is just amazing. Although most rock bands have a drummer that is perfectly capable, there's something robotic and too perfect about other drummers, like their sound could easily be recreated by getting a drum machine. But there's nothing robotic about Bonhams drumming, and a machine could not do what he does.

Bonham would have to be the greatest drummer of all time, though Gene Kruppa is a contender.
