i watched this when i was a kid, and this part scared me and the wheelers at the start before tinman, now i read the coments, i feel muh better that i wasnt the only one who was scared
I remember being freked by this as a kid. And don't shoot me, but I remembered seeing The Wizard of Oz and Return to Oz back-to-back as a kid and I actually preferred Return to OZ.
It was dark and grittier. Definitely left a bigger impact than the c9olourful singing kids moves shoved down our throats.
I saw this movie as a kid, and it traumatised me. Its now my favourite family movie for its dark story, atmosphere and characters. But damn, I STILL can't watch this part
This scene is pretty scary. If I was in Dorothy's shoes, I would have poked Mombi's original head in the eyes, nabbed the Powder of Life, rugby tackled her headless body and ran as fast as I can so that I have enough time for me and the others to escape before Mombi could get her head.
As someone who watched this as a three-four year old, rewatching this feels a bit strange. It's like viewing an old childhood nightmare caught on tape.
This has to be the MOST SCARIEST part of the movie... I remember watching this when it came out... I swear I had nightmares for atleast a month! Great film though...
@ikdushea Interesting, since it's based off of the Oz books, which are 100% for children.
Kids need to be scared like this. It's good for them! :> People overprotect kids from "scary" stuff to the point where too many kids are becoming total wusses.
Man I don't know what future generations are going to be like seeing how they were never scared shitless watching everything that came out in the 80s.
This isn't even the worst part! Remember those wheeler-things, the desert that turns people to sand, the giant gnome-guy trying to eat Dorothy's mates then MELTING?! Dude, the 80s were a scary place :D They don't make kids' movies like this any more!
The way she says Dorothy Gale is Properly like earth movingly scary I love this film so much I watched it a lot when i was little and for my 18th birthday my sister got me a box of keys cuz they feature heavily in the film Im well happy :D
Return to Oz is a marvellous film. No stupid singing/dancing utopian bullsh!t. Grim, eerie and very spooky...this film really leaves a lasting impression, no matter what age you are. It's great.
You gotta love how the first one was so magical and bright and then this one... well it's the complete opposite.
Great sequel though, which is a surprise because with a movie like Wizard of Oz it's one of those things people would never want a sequel to, especially with different actors.
@RockstarGamesReviews This isn't a sequel, though. It's based on the 2nd and 3rd Oz books. The "first" one was an overly-loose adaptation. A great movie in its own right, of course, but a horrible adaptation.
Okay guys this is called the circle of life people okay everything comes full circle in 1937 a man named Walt Disney released snow white & the seven dwarfs okay that inspired MGM studious to release the now infamous classic The wizard of oz heavily influenced by snow white as a matter of fact margarett hamiltons terrifying portrayal of the wicked witch of the east/west was influenced by the queen in snow white....
Not many people know of this film but it's definatly one that has always stayed in the back of my mind. I can sit and watch it over and over. This film sucks you right in even though you do get a few scares here and there!
The wheelers used to give me nightmares....something about those things..
You know what's really funny? When I was a kid this part didn't really scare me but the wheelers did. I know I said this already on two other youtube sites but just what can a wheeler do to you? I mean think about it, really! *LOL*
@MrTripp1977 That point was actually brought up in the book--the wheelers are scary at first, but then the characters point out that there's nothing they can do to hurt you because they have wheels instead of hands.
Man Im 28 and this still freaks me out. I used to watch this when I was like 6 and I remember I couldnt watch this unless I sat with a wall behind me......just incase a headless women was behind me. They sure dont make movies like they used too
rofl at the comments! ahh they just dont make em like they used to. DOROTHY GAAAIIIIIL!! i honestly dont know which affected me more, this scene or the electric shock treatment scene lol
the most underrated film of all time. loved this film as a kid and this scene was the scariest, princess mombi screamin dorothys name, seein all the heads screamin, a headless body cumin after u and the music fits in beautifully.
Sweet mother of God. This is the first time I have seen this clip in years. This movie and "The Dark Crystal" scared the hell out of me as a kid. Nightmares galore!!! This scene is also the reason why I hate the song "Eleanor Rigby". I've always imagined her as Queen Mombi when "she keeps her face in a jar by the door".
Hard to believe this was a Disney film. You don't see this anymore, what with Camp Rock, and the Jonas and all of that shit. Fuck it, kids these days, they missed out the good stuff.
This scene gave me nightmares as a kid. And I watched every Freddie movie and Jason a couple years after, a couple years older but they never gave me the creeps like this scene.
Holy crap! Last night I randomly remembered watching this movie when I was a kid, and had awful visions of this headless witch. So I decided to find the video on YouTube, thinking "it can't be as scary as I remember" BUT ITS WORSE!! I wouldn't show my daughter this in a million years!!
OMG I love this movie...and Oz stuff in general (the Wizard of Oz, the original Oz books, Wicked, etc.). But omg it's not until just now that I realize how weird of a movie this is...but I still love it :3
LOL when I was a little kid (like 5 or 6) I was talking about princesses and I told my aunt that she reminded me of Princess Mombi xP.
Return to oz has to be one of the most frightening films i have ever seen. This scene with headless mombi is horrific.I can not imagine a six year old child watching this film, it will give them nightmares for a very long time.
when i have kids, Im going to make them watch this movie just like I did when I was like 5. Im sure it'll be much better than other movies of that time.
how was this film ever ment for kids, i can jus see the makers if it rubbing there hands together and saying "if that dnt scare the living shit out all those little bastards i dnt kno what will!" evil!!
oh I love this scene in this movie! as a young child, it was a fave! I always wanted to have a hallway of heads and stone statues! awesome. best kids movie EVER!
I was four when my Dad took me to see this in the theater and it's one of my earliest memories. The electroshock treatment was terrifying, the wheelers really upset me and then this... this really made me cry.
Dad really liked the movie though, so he wanted to stay for the rest of it. Somehow we managed to get through it.
As a 6 year old this was the first film I saw at the cinema. The Wheelers and the headless Witch scared me shitless! I love this film, wish kids movies were more like this.
The scariest thing about this scene is not the screaming heads, not the headless body, but the music. It's just strikes at your nerves. Enough to give a 7 year old a heart attack.
When I was in first grade, our teacher figured this was a harmless kids movie, so she pressed play and left the room. I had nightmares about this case of heads for years.
I've just tried self-therapy as the memory of this scene has terrified me for over 20yrs! I thought it was about time I tried to convince myself it can't have been that scary.
I was wrong.
Are there any other scenes with the case of heads in?
@Kew010 Haha, the same thing happened to our class when I was still at primary school. Although this movie never scared me, the Wheelers did freak me out a little. I still hold The Return to Oz in such high regard, even today. It's a fantastic film.
This movie was not a sequel to Judy Garland's Oz movie. As a matter of fact, this movie is NOT a sequel to any movie.
It's called "Return to Oz" simpy because the main character - Dorothy Gale - keeps talking about how she's been to a land called Oz, so her parents think she's lunatic and take her to a clinic to give her electroshock therapy, but the lights on the clinic go out, and suddenly Dorothy finds herself back in Oz land.
And, yes, there are actually gurgling sounds from the neck as the headless body passes by (I just noticed)! At that point, most of us were already hiding behind the couch, but, good Lord!
really? i am suprised to see that u guys were scared of it. when i was about 2, i became a huge fan of the wizard of oz. (i still am) so when i was 7 i saw this at blockbuster and watched it. i loved the movie! never got any nightmares. my friend and i would always imitate the 'DORRRROTHHYYY GAAAAALE'. we thought it was hysterical!
this is seriously the scariest part of the movie. "Doooorthy Gaaaaale! Doooorthy Gaaaallllle!" and all those heads screaming and the headless body. freaky!
This might just seem B and silly now when you're older, but as a kid around 3 - 5 this whole movie was like a nightmare and not only because of countless of intentionally scary scenes but the character designs, the ''empty'' atmosphere of it all, everything. I couldn't help but love it anyway because of it's imaginative visuals but I would never have watched it alone.
God, every once in a great while I'll have these really vague and obscure nightmares where for no apparent reason I just feel terrified, and I think they might have something to do with my early experiences watching this one scene.
lol this scene always used to scare the living hell outta me when i was younger.... lol i used to hide in the kitchen or behind the sofa when this scene came on because i found it so scary when she suddenly started shouting "NAUGHTY GIRL" repetedly lol xx.. love the film to bits :D xx
I know this version of Mombi is not really like the book version, more an amalgam of the Princess and the Witch, but damn this character really gripped and frightened me as a child. Even as a kid, the idea of a woman so warped by vanity and envy kinda got to me, along with the more obvious creepiness of screaming disembodied heads :)

Damn this is a cool movie. I never saw it as a kid, but it would have given me plenty of nightmares.

And, yes, there are actually gurgling sounds from the neck as the headless body passes by (I just noticed)! At that point, most of us were already hiding behind the couch, but, good Lord!

(i still am) so when i was 7 i saw this at blockbuster and watched it. i loved the movie! never got any nightmares. my friend and i would always imitate the 'DORRRROTHHYYY GAAAAALE'. we thought it was hysterical!

Ok, this is really freaky. I haven't watched this for years.
I loved this movie as a child. I have no idea why this didn't freak me out?
I am scared now.

this is seriously the scariest part of the movie.

I couldn't help but love it anyway because of it's imaginative visuals but I would never have watched it alone.

is she saying "naughty girl" or '"dorthy gale"?
tommychefboy 2 years ago
She's saying "Dorothy Gale."
God, every once in a great while I'll have these really vague and obscure nightmares where for no apparent reason I just feel terrified, and I think they might have something to do with my early experiences watching this one scene.

God damn this movie scared the shit out of me when I was little.
I loved the first Wizard of Oz and my mom rented this for me thinking it'd be more of the same.
I slept with the light on for a good 4 months after this movie.
