I also like Sokolov very much. I think he's one of the best pianists alive. However, I do not like this performance of the op. 10 No. 8. There's a beautiful melody in the left hand that I barely hear. The right hand is most of the times the accompaniment here, not all the way around. He, as so many other pianists is trying to impress the audience with his amazing fingers. What I hear here is a "study" and not the master piece that this work is. Unusual for Sokolov.
Yes, Sokolov is the greatest musician of our time. Not only intellectually, but he knows how to channel warmth, tragedy, love, longing, playfulness and so forth in the most profound way, not to mention his fantastic technical ability, which is always in the service of music.
@NOSEhow2LIV I couldn't agree more! The right hand is immaculate yet musically the performance is driven by the left hand. Sokolov brings out both the delicacy and drama to maximum effect.
he was 17 years old

A typical performance from the 'old Russian school': very fast.
That's a pity, because we nearly lose the beautiful melody in the left hand.

Among the best possible. Amazing fluency, revealing all the music's possibilities. The most natural musician.

So wonderful to see this older footage of him.
He is certainly the greatest living pianist. He breaths a unique life into everything he plays.
