You get use to it, I was 11 when I first experienced our siren go off. I never forgot that day, it's weird how tornados love coming on either May 23-4-5-6 or altogether.
im not trying to rub it in but i live in maryland and im glad i dont live in tornado alley..but some parts of texas dont get deadly tornadoes i dont think i would move some where other thatn the part of the stste you live in or move to maryland and or any where on the east or the west coast :)
I live in West Central Texas and I remember somewhere in the middle or March we had an EF-1 tornado in my town. It was about 5 miles away from my house. But it only stayed on the ground for like 10 minuetes.
I must have been out of town during this storm. I don't remember this at all, the most recent tornado warnings I remember occurred in about March of 2007.
Yikes, that hook near Waco looks like a comma...it's quite pronounced. I'm glad you and your children were safe! I live in the northern part of tornado alley. I'd be terrified without a basement....in fact if this house ever got destroyed, I'd consider building an earth-sheltered home. ;)
That is one thing I think about in TX that area no basements. I remember working at Scott and White Hospital during a tornado warning, Patients where out in the hallways in the middle of the units trying to stay away from the windows. It would be horriable for a Tornado to hit a hosptial like that one or any others.
oh my gosh i remember that storm! it hit us at 2 in the morning and there was a tornado a mile away from us. i was crying and oh my gosh it was so scary!
Yes...I know one did for sure briefly a few miles away...very minor damage, if any. There was a funnel cloud VERY close to where I live but I'm not sure if it spun out to tornado. If so, it was brief.
this may sound crazy but being in ct and rarely experiencing weather like you guys get, i welcome a tornado to buzz by us so i can get a taste of the experience. I LOVE TORNADOS
I suppose they're pretty cool from a distance, but when you think one might destroy your house and kill your family, it's not so cool. It's a completely helpless feeling because we don't have basements in the part of the country. But as much as I scared of them, I'm equally fascinated.
Nobody in this part of the country has basements. There are some people with below ground shelters...I wish I knew someone who did...I'd be their new best friend. :) I have a tiny closet somewhat in the middle of my house (open-plan house) that will do no good if there's a decent sized tornado. That's why I stress....I feel like a sitting duck.
@greentxmama The soil in North/Central Texas has too much clay in it for any house to have a basement. You're lucky if you have an underground shelter.
I'm pretty sure i remember this, I live in Killeen, and if this was at like 5am then i was running around like a chicken with its head cut off.. I'm from California so earthquakes i can handle , don't know if i will make it thru a tornado....
This was just before the one you were talking about...we lived pretty close to Killeen. The one you're thinking of was on May 14th...I remember because it was my birthday and my weather radio woke me up with a "TORNADO WARNING" alert...You weren't the only one running around like a chicken with its head cut off! My husband had to calm me down so I wouldn't freak out the kids.
this was wayyy worse than the tornado we had in nappanee indiana we only had an f3 yours was prlly an f5 i hope everyone was ok but the miracle in our tornado was no one was majorly hurt
(continued) I have lived in Kerens pretty much all my life (over 20-plus years), and as far as I can remember, that is the closest near-miss I believe our town has ever seen, period. The wall cloud was literally rotating (fast) as I was pulling into town. I'm driving in my car thinking, "OK, do I need to turn around and go back?" I'll never forget that day. Thank you for posting this video.
(Sidenote: the TV news footage was from KXXV-TV Waco, TX) I remember this day. If you stop the video at 27 or 28 seconds and look at the top-right. That diagonal box on the map is Navarro County, the city of Corsicana is in the center. I live in Kerens, just east of Corsicana. If you'll notice that red cell just east of Corsicana, I remember coming home from grocery shopping driving westbound into the east part of Kerens, then looking up at the sky at a heavily rotating wall cloud.
Oh God I was tracking this storm with my friend and we were FREAKING OUT cause that's our biggest fear, also.Yes,that is what you have to go through living in Tornado Alley. I live in the Metroplex and I hate it when out of state friends say,"Durhur, well you live in the city and tornadoes don't hit big cities!" NOT TRUE!It's just like throwing a dart at a map...
If anybody thinks New York is Tornado Proof they are CRAZY & STUPID! It may not be like the ones in Texas and Oklahoma, but they DO get Twisters in the summer. I get pissed at the fact that only few New York towns have Tornado Warning Sirens AND that people think New York State is a stranger to Tornadoes because THEY ARE NOT! For example, Staten Island, New York and Memphis, TN have BOTH been hit by 4 Tornadoes since 1950.
Yup I grew up on Long Island and we used to have tornado watches & warnings on TV. The emergency broadcast system would interrupt the TV program with a tornado watch (or warning). Sometimes it was a severe thunderstorm watch or warning, other times it was a for a tornado. Either the TV would give us the alert, or the radio would beep and then we'd get the message warning us of severe weather. It always scared the crap out of me as a kid.
Wow! That's horrible...but GOOD that you all are okay. We don't live IN Bedrock,...Although looking at it, it looks like that's what I meant. :) I meant that we don't have basements because of the bedrock just below the soil. I think I live close to you though. Thanks for your comments!
good lord that is frightening.......when i was 4 we had a tornado come through our house. thank god we were in the basement. you have a basement? i hope.... have a great weekend greentxmamma. kat
Hi Kat...No, we don't have basements in this part of the country (bedrock). That's why I feel so damn helpless when we get tornado warnings. We're getting a house built now and we WILL have a storm shelter. One of my top requirements. Do you remember the tornado going through your house??? Scary!
yes i do remember it....i was only four years old, and my sister grabbed me by my long hair and drug me down the steps....it sounded like everyone says it does "like a train". yes...very scary...
You get use to it, I was 11 when I first experienced our siren go off. I never forgot that day, it's weird how tornados love coming on either May 23-4-5-6 or altogether.

Well...there's more to Texas than tornadoes. And anywhere you live in the world, there will be a threat of some type of natural disaster.
