As unlikely a creation as such a character may be, lots of stories use 'unlikely' devices for their narratives, and this one is actually based upon a real life relationship between the lead actress and the writer/director, though how closely I do not know.
One of the best things about this scene is its rawness. No stupid lilting music audio track to tug your emotions. Kevin Smith did a fine job here showing a true naked emotional interaction. Very real- though from my experience it is a rare woman indeed who can react to such a verbal outporing of candor. I gather 80% of time in this situation male friend telling f how much he's grown to actually love her gets cut off with curt reply, a resounding silence, and a look of disdain

This is one of the best scenes about love outside of casablanca.

Women are just as idiotic about love as men are. They delude themselves into thinking they have the market cornered on emotional drama in relationships and that someone entitles them to do stupid things or hurt someone. Women are confused on what they want. They get married to a nice guy, he has a good job and a house then later the guy finds out shes been cheating on him. Guys are different, we know what we want but dont know how to get it. Women dont know what they want but know how to get it.

This movie and perhaps Dogma are the reasons why I respect Ben Affleck as an actor. Also Jersey Girl, not as bad as most said it was (OK, I will admit that Liv Tyler could've been for the most part omitted from the film).
