yup... initially i had that problem bec i did not know how to support it right. or sometimes i underestimate the size of cake board to use--like the case in this cake-- bec the cake board was a bit too small, it only supprted the cake, but when the fondant was laid on it, it started to push down.
We do :) If Im giving the cake to a friend, I find that other people are reluctant in slicing the cake since it will destroy the design...but it's funny to think that way since it was made to be eaten. In a way , fondant cakes add to the 'mental picture' associated with the event which is great, but to me, after you see it --you still gotta eat it :)
hi Im planning to make my son a fondant bday cake. He's turning 2 and its my first time to make a cake for him. What basic materials did you buy for the cakes that you made? Can you pls post, I would really appreciate it.I checked and the fondant rolling pins is quite pricey. Thanks
I will try to do that today --or soon--- Tammy, I'm not sure if it will look nice though since these animals were first try babies. My little boy doesn't allow much time for caking these days :(
i'll be happy enough with anything haha! just so we know the basics, it doesnt have to be perfect, then me and everyone else can add our own little tweaks and special things!
I just came back from Walmart with some fondant supplies, and my friends and I are going to try our hand out today. Thank you for posting these fabulous videos; God has blessed you with an eye for creation!
Hey there!! Wonderful job!!! Just one thing that might add a cute touch...since you have grass around the outside of the cake (really cute by the way!) i think it would like nice to incorporate that grass throughout the cake. Like by piping on some small blades around the pig's mud pit and some around the edges of the barn. It might make it look even more realistic and tie it all together!
Keep posting vids...they're awesome and so is your talent! :)
Thanks a lot ... i will try working on gumpaste soon... it seems better to work with in terms of making figures retain their shape...and making smaller details . I really wish i asked some of you guys before making this since the barn issues gave me nightmares haha :) But there's always another time to try to make it better!
That's a very cute cake! I would say it looks fantastic, lol, but Tammyscakes did it for me! I would suggest that you use one bit of fondant for the sides of the barn, and create the look of separate bricks/wood with a knife. I think it looks a little cleaner, and it's easier and quicker than laying on separate peices. You also have a bit more flexibility this way, and you won't get the little spaces in between. I love watching your videos, thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks a lot :) I wish I asked some people before I made the barn. I did not know that it would fall apart on me the following morning. It looked really good when everything was still in it's proper place. And I was horrified when the little pieces took a life of their own haha! I will try your suggestion and mimzywhimzy's when I make something similar in the future. :)
the pig is precious &i love the sheep. the cow has a great expression 2! next time you need2 make wood planks or bricks - like you did for the face of the barn, try laying out a single piece of fondant cut 2the shape of your barn front, texture it as you did w/ur knife, &allow it to dry fully b4 putting it on your cake - so it's all in 1piece and won't sink apart. Same w/the shingles - they'd be much lighter if they were applied 2the cake when dry.
what am i going to do without you?! i wish i emailed you before i made this cake-- it does make sense to do it that way... ill try that next time. but when i have questions in my head for my next cake, pls don't get annoyed when i ask you okay :) thanks so much for your pointers. you are one of my best youtube teachers!!!
LoL, nooooo problem. Ever watch Ace of Cakes on the Food Network? They do a lot of improvising and use a lot of clever tricks. I highly recommend watching the show - my philosophy is, why do all that work to reinvent the wheel when you can just improve on pre-existing plans!
ill do that first thing tomorrow :) ... i just had to finish these two cakes -- the events were 3 days apart... so i am still shaky haha. but tomorrow i'll make sure to do that for ya!

Do you ever have trouble with your fondant designs being so heavy that they " sink " into the cake??
