Well we don't really know that whole story. And that what makes it good, the viewer can imagine or create their own back story. My take on is, the guy is a pyschopath who has a Virgin/Whore complex. Women are either virgins and whores. He falls in love with this beautiful and sweet girl, but when she falls short of his ideal, wether she really isn't virginal or not, he loses his mind and kills her.

And then who is it that call her the wild rose? and why WAS her name Eliza Day?

I figure the guy had his heart broken by are girl, maybe somehow in relation to those roses.

My comment about that Nick Cave and Kylie song stays. Out of a 1000 songs the Beatles put out, one or two might have a harsh word or meaning in the lyrics... oooh aahh!

Out of 10,000 other REAL rock and roll songs from the 50s, 60s & 70s there are a few more.

My comment re Nick Cave songs and many others nowdays is that they are punctuated with a strong undercurrent of sickness. In fact, it seems to permeate his entire catalogue. To me, it's just rubbish.
