In India, Pathans have putative ancestry. According to them, someone is Pathan who's paternal dad side is Afghan even if mother is Indian. Most Pathans in India don't speak Pashto but Urdu.

My grandfather was Pathan but since my mum married a Himachali, I do not consider myself one. Most of my uncles married Pathan women so my cousins are Pathan.
