They really perform very well together...he might well have just joined the band, but they don't really need two primary leads, still a fantastic dynamic.
This was always a band built around Michael...the way his vocals were hidden and muffled early on. But Peter was the soul. He carried and continued and defined the sound and the music.
@AhYaOk he has been the best for over 20 years now. your leaving out robert plant, neil young, the doors, u2, kings of leon, ramones, the strokes and many more.
I was in college in 1983 in upstate New York. There was a band I never head of called REM playing a free concert in the gym. I went to the library instead. Great move.
Man its shitty this beautiful band had to call it quits, and yes I'm aware EV is not a member of R.E.M.; but I really think this will just be a really long hiatus. There's no way in hell they'll stay broken up forever
@vanhalendreams It's not a breakup. It's simply the end of their story. They have nothing left to accomplish together. They'll still make music. Possibly together. But R.E.M. has reached its closing credits. A bittersweet, but happy ending.
Michael was a hell of a front man.. no doubt about it.. but Im reading a lot of hyperbole here..because if you have never seen Stone Temple Pilots and Scott Wylan in concert.. as far as Genre and Front men go..he's the bomb!.. Loved Mike.... just in perspective.
@bassmanjoe good joke buddy! haha but in all honesty you really havent really listened too or understood pearl jam if youre saying that. pearl jam and REM are both fantastic bands but with completely different musical feels and styles, not to mention two completely different front men who im sure probably wouldnt approved of themselves being compared anyway

Honestly, I hate Eddie Vedder so much. Pearl Jam were unspeakably awful, I hate every note of their turgid, classic rock-styled horseshit. They were about as 'alternative' as Def Leppard.
REM always gave me the feeling that they had carefully crafted the songs I loved. Pearl Jam always gave me they would be still be blasting their songs, that I loved, out in a garage somewhere if they weren't famous. Gotta love both bands.
REM always gave me the feeling that they had carefully crafted the songs I loved. Pearl Jam always gave me they would be still be blasting their songs, that I loved, out in a garage somewhere if they weren't famous. Gotta love both bands.
REM and Michael are great but he is not the best frontmant ever, in early 90's Eddie was so much more than a white-hot charisma, no offense dude, but Pearl Jam is way too much than Rem in every sense...
Best gig ever: R.E.M. With Eddie Vedder, Hendrix on guitar and Cobain helping out. Maybe a bit of Eric Clapton on guitar as well. You might be able to tell I like guitar.
Is Michael NOT friend with any alternative music super-star? He was Kurt Cobain´s compadre, he has sung with Thom Yorke and with Eddie Vedder... i kinda envy him you know?
@makidtrej He asked Cobain to do a concert with him that was scheduled to be on the day Cobain killed himself. What a great concert that would have been. :( R.I.P. Cobain.
look I like pearl jam, but michael shows why he is the best front man ever. the voice, the moves, using his white-hot charisma to bring in the audience, makes you forget everything but that moment-BRIL-LI-ANT!!
@SheaS100 the moves? he looks like hes having a seizure. great voice but it ends there. theres no comparison to eddie vedder or pearl jam. eddies on a whole other level
I thhink both Stipe and Vedder would consider your attempt to categorize and rank them as counterproductive to the type of messages they want the world to take away from their music.
