  • THIS IS SO AWESOME!

  • What's up with stipes voice?

  • I think it's safe to say that this is the song that inspired Veddar to go into music :-P sounds a lot like early Pearl Jam

  • They really perform very well together...he might well have just joined the band, but they don't really need two primary leads, still a fantastic dynamic.

  • Example, the finest example is YOU!

  • OMG, these two men singing together makes me so happy. Awesomeness, pure and simple.

  • This was always a band built around Michael...the way his vocals were hidden and muffled early on. But Peter was the soul. He carried and continued and defined the sound and the music.

  • I think the bassist should fly commercial airline drunk. Always a good idea.

  • love this!

  • springsteen and eddie vedder, tom petty eddie vedder. pete townsend eddie vedder. rem eddie vedder. just to name a few. dang, this guy keeps busy.

  • @AhYaOk he has been the best for over 20 years now. your leaving out robert plant, neil young, the doors, u2, kings of leon, ramones, the strokes and many more.

  • @occupynow supercool

  • @AhYaOk soundgarden, alice in chains, perry ferrel, bad religion, henry rollins, buzzcocks, split endz, john doe of x and many more.

  • @occupynow Well R.E.M. is the best of the 80s, but the ramones and led zeppelin clearly own the 70s

  • This is like a dream come true....

  • I was in college in 1983 in upstate New York. There was a band I never head of called REM playing a free concert in the gym. I went to the library instead. Great move.

  • @46spoony FAIL! hahahaha

  • Not the same without Bill. If you were crazy into Bill's drumming like some of us were, you can hear the differences here, and it takes away so much.

  • Man its shitty this beautiful band had to call it quits, and yes I'm aware EV is not a member of R.E.M.; but I really think this will just be a really long hiatus. There's no way in hell they'll stay broken up forever

  • @vanhalendreams It's not a breakup. It's simply the end of their story. They have nothing left to accomplish together. They'll still make music. Possibly together. But R.E.M. has reached its closing credits. A bittersweet, but happy ending.

  • Yes Eddie, as great as you are get down on your knees and pray to your mentors.

  • That was just so......fucking......cool!

  • wow

  • hahaha i love pete

  • It isnt a competition? Never is

  • Michael was a hell of a front man.. no doubt about it.. but Im reading a lot of hyperbole here..because if you have never seen Stone Temple Pilots and Scott Wylan in concert.. as far as Genre and Front men go..he's the bomb!.. Loved Mike.... just in perspective.

  • @bassmanjoe good joke buddy! haha but in all honesty you really havent really listened too or understood pearl jam if youre saying that. pearl jam and REM are both fantastic bands but with completely different musical feels and styles, not to mention two completely different front men who im sure probably wouldnt approved of themselves being compared anyway

  • great...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • che abbiano ragione o torto fa male sapere che un gruppo come i REM si sciologono...sic..

  • r.i.p. r.e.m.

  • REM have retired their music career :(

  • HOLY FICK THIS IS AWESOME

  • I love Eddie Vedder, I love Begin the Begin, but most of all I love the pretentious slaphead Michael Stipe. This song is exhilarating.

  • Eddie Vedder = The BEST thing on that stage!

  • shea you nailed it! i wqas speaking to him about an artist/director and he compared him to eddie as a "master of economy of gesture" i was like? eddie? economty if "HUH"? but then i watched ms just kick eddies ass to shreds, and its so beuatiful, the most graceful man in history of rock frontmen, and god one day i hope ill get to do a live with him ( i just at 46 finally sang ona trqack w him) I( it was pirate song delightful!) i look foreward to having my ass handed to me by a pro

  • I like the gravelly sound in Mike's voice here

  • poor Eddie ..can't dance

  • Michael b da MAN!!!!!!!!!

  • If Eddie Vedder wasnt so hard on George Bush he'd be a likable guy.

  • was lucky enough to see these two on the same stage in seattle 2001. REM is an amazing legendary band, pearl jam, meh. If you havent heard Collapse Into Now, yet, GET IT.

  • It's the energy of Michael that had me literally bouncing up and down...long before Shiny Happy People...what a great combo...:) thanks...

  • Why do so many videos of great performers collaborating deteriorate into stupid arguments over which one "won"?

  • @wordhurler It's clear that they don't give a fuck...they're both enjoying themselves

  • perfect with one exception..............bill berry is not behind the drum set.

  • @tsu3608 Absolutely and totally agree!!! It was nevcer the same again without him... :-(

  • Great, great effort

  • awesome x 10

  • Damn, I want Michael's white suit. Now that is styling!

  • eddie is not going to try and dance and get all intense and stick out and show off when its his show dude. sorry go see a few more pearl jam shows you then you'll see why Eddie is right up there with anyone!

  • omg this is great

  • It's like a rap battle. And Stipe demolishes Vedder.

  • the voice of eddie vedder like a little as Kurt Kubain

  • I've never been a huge Eddie Vedder fan, but I do have to say he has a consistent quality to the way he sings. I have huge respect for that.

  • 555 likes & 5 dislikes thats a lot of 5s lol great song

  • Who didn't Eddie sing with? Gosh talk about livin the dream! Awesome!

  • @mzk123ify tell me about it..he got to sing with Neil young and Bruce springsteen

  • michael stipe has the greatest rock voice ever

  • R.E.M. made me love Pearl Jam

  • Comment removed

  • both eddie and michael (and of course the rest) are beautiful people and i would give them a huge hug for helping me through life

  • At least Vedder has hair...

  • Is there anybody that Eddie Vedder won't sing with? Jeez that guy would show up to the opening of an envelope.

  • @jeffwpope And I was there he really pushed it

  • Pretty powerful. What's that dance move that Buck tries out at about 0:45? Looks like he might've pulled a groiner on that one.

  • Fuck yeah! Can Eddie please step up and pull Stipe's head out of his ass again, 'cuz that rocked.

  • 00:04 what da hack was that ... Karate Kid??? .-)

  • Mr. Bill Berry - you are missed sir... Thanks for all the great music.

  • Supergroup!

  • @minedarea And your an irish prick

  • @roxydog2004 Fantastic counter argument, sir. I can see there's no point in my debating with an intellectual heavyweight such as yourself.

  • @minedarea oh you poor, ignorant person

  • wow eddies voice really suits this song. Nice tone

  • shit this is so much louder than the last video i watched. scared the shit outta me.

  • This is why my generation had greatness granted to it. Beguiling and vital. Thanks

  • huh? REM is from Athens, Georgia. Canadian?

  • REM always gave me the feeling that they had carefully crafted the songs I loved. Pearl Jam always gave me they would be still be blasting their songs, that I loved, out in a garage somewhere if they weren't famous. Gotta love both bands.

  • @OKPAIN i totally agree

  • Absolutely kick ass.

  • Oh no, did Michael actually have to tell Eddie the lyrics - because how else would anyone know what they are?

  • Michael is good but the best ever? I don't know bout that there boys..

  • awesome!!!

  • wow. eddie and my grandfather have the same dance moves!

  • The greatest version of this song! ;-)

    R.E.M. ROCKS!!!

  • gndsd402,

Nice code name brother. Thanks for posting this video. Long long long ago I knew these guys and they deserve evrything they get and give away.

    BizzyF

  • Eddie is like, "What the crap?! when Stipe starts having that epileptic fit at the beginning.

  • This just sends chills up my spine...

  • These two are Friggin AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • c'mon eddie, dance like michael :)

  • REM and Michael are great but he is not the best frontmant ever, in early 90's Eddie was so much more than a white-hot charisma, no offense dude, but Pearl Jam is way too much than Rem in every sense...

  • It is about time to begin again isn't it?

  • It just doesn't get Eddie Vedder than that!!

  • @niteflyre nice wordplay! Who are you?, The Annoying Orange?

  • @themooddisorders I agree with you. Don't be an apple. Hahahaha.

  • @niteflyre Hahahaha, Yor're funny, nice work and I agree, these two voices belong together.

  • they two are great together

  • Comment removed

  • What makes this so great is that it's so apparent that they are having a blast. This is one of the best rock songs ever.

  • just love it

  • I would so love to see an REM tour of songs up to Green only. That would be something i'd pay a fortune for.

    Still a great band.

  • I wish I could buy this song on I tunes. I really like this version of the song. Vedder & Stipe Live just make this song better.

  • Best gig ever: R.E.M. With Eddie Vedder, Hendrix on guitar and Cobain helping out. Maybe a bit of Eric Clapton on guitar as well. You might be able to tell I like guitar.

  • @JJKingy22081994 and no Led Zeppelin? Well John Paul Jones helped with string arrangements on automatic for the people

  • I think eddie´s shirt is the same that he wore at the evenflow video, and sure he's still have it, hehe

  • Vedder is dwarfed

  • Is Michael NOT friend with any alternative music super-star? He was Kurt Cobain´s compadre, he has sung with Thom Yorke and with Eddie Vedder... i kinda envy him you know?

  • @makidtrej I guess that's what happens when you become a major inspiration for a musical movement. ;)

  • @makidtrej He asked Cobain to do a concert with him that was scheduled to be on the day Cobain killed himself. What a great concert that would have been. :( R.I.P. Cobain.

  • If Micheal Stipe wasn't a singer, he'd be an actor, comdian, magician....the man was born to entertain.!!

  • look I like pearl jam, but michael shows why he is the best front man ever. the voice, the moves, using his white-hot charisma to bring in the audience, makes you forget everything but that moment-BRIL-LI-ANT!!

  • @SheaS100 the moves? he looks like hes having a seizure. great voice but it ends there. theres no comparison to eddie vedder or pearl jam. eddies on a whole other level

  • @SheaS100 i love rem but stipe didn't pose back then to engage crowds and right now eddie doesnt needs to pose to engage millions, period

  • @SheaS100

I thhink both Stipe and Vedder would consider your attempt to categorize and rank them as counterproductive to the type of messages they want the world to take away from their music.

  • Outstanding! Would be nice if the boys from Athens would go to some places that they used to hit with regularity again. Seems like I always see tributes and special stuff in larger markets as well as Europe, their second home. Hmmm, quite a contrast from the r.e.m. of early days in the 80s...

  • one of the best REM songs!

  • That was great.

  • looks like the same concert that springsteen played at, is this a special tribute to people or sumthing? more importantly, anyone know of a dvd of it?

  • I have a crush on eddie.

  • Comment removed

  • saw the same song with Eddie at the mann music center a few summers back from the 3rd row.. too cool

  • Maybe one of the hardest hitting, in you face rock songs ever written . pure energy ! Just awsome....so cool.......you know before Eddie made it w/P.J he realy was into early R.E.M.............Eddie is a humble LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Eddie & Michael are both my faves. So as PJ & R.E.M., wonder if they could write some songs together....it' ll be awesome.

  • Making me tingle all over!! INSPIRING!

  • Wow, this is very cool. I love that Eddie Vedder is a goofy a dancer as Michael. :-) Don't take that the wrong way people. I'm 10 times worse than both of them and slightly less..erm...famous.

  • this was really cool to stumble across. thank u, anna renee`

  • Michael's getting his Dr. Evil on ...

  • I can't help it - but these guys really compliment each other way too much. I have to say it's GREAT too watch - thanks for the post..!

  • Love this song. Got to see REM in Louisville on the Green tour. Loved them, but everything post Green has been pretty useless.

  • Wrong. New adventures in hi-fi is r.e.m.'s best record and it's post green. even monster is way better than green.

  • @rickthaluddite I dont know ,man. "Auto-Matic" is pretty darn good.

  • @ilovejourney1 Agreed. I'm on my 4th copy of AFTP because the other 3 have been lost or stolen. I don't know why I would say hi-fi is best (I must've been listening to it a lot at the time;-)) Automatic is the one album I always listen to from start to finish when I play it. I guess I was just refuting kpart70's ridiculous claim that everything post Green is useless.

  • @rickthaluddite I hear ya,man

  • yes , REM gave so much to mainstream music ... i remember the 1989 '' with the Orange tour ...that was just owesome .Stilll have that record Vinyl at home .

  • I hope Eddie do some more songs with R.E.M. ... every Song i just great with him and Peter rocks like every Concert they do, just funny to see him playing and he does his job great as every time ;)

  • Everytime I see Eddie,I want to lick my computer screen.

  • My 2 favorite male rockers.

  • NICEEE MOVES !!!! Gaaghhhhhh Apocalyptical Cool

  • REM changed music.

  • Very upbeat.....lol funny watchn vedder in the beginin doing what are calestetics while peters girating lol, but good song.

  • Stipe's still got those stage moves!

One of my faves off of Life's Rich Pageant.

  • peter rocking out 00:39 :D

  • One of my favourite songs, done by two of my favourite singers. Thanks :-)

  • Took me a while to get into this song but its a grower. The sound is awesome in this vid. Great song

  • It's awesome!!!

  • How fun! And that white suit is awesome!

  • REM / Pearl Jam, a beautiful and perfect double. So eletrics, thanks a lot.

  • Eddie is so hot here.

Awesome rendition of the song, probably REM's best opener.

  • fabulous....mike & eddie, the best......

  • Eddie Vedder makes everything better....

  • The two greatest survivors from the 80s and 90s Alternative wave.

Theres not an American band from the new century that could reach them.

  • @Josephdpbrex I agree with your first statement, but I must disagree that there is not a new American band that's as good. Kings of Leon is the best band since Pearl Jam.

  • @angeleyesstl kings of leon might have been potential successors to bands like PJ and REM once, but after Only By The Night they're dead to real music fans. If you sell out that badly you cannot be mentioned in the same breath as a band like Pearl Jam, who actually make music they love and their fans love, not music so bland it'll be played regularly at children's parties

  • @Josephdpbrex Ahhh REM is Canadian!!

  • holy crap! nothing better!

  • yeah!!

    fuck yeah!!!

  • I wanna lick eddie!

  • is that the orignal drummer who had the aneurysm? someone let me know!

  • No that's not the original drummer (Bill Berry) but that guy drumming does sort of look like him of course no one can pull of the almighty eyebrows that are Bill's

  • true

  • no, that is not Bill Berry. he only joined REM at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame a couple years ago

  • I think Michael was giving Eddie the googly eyes! Awesome performance.

  • two of the best singers ever in one song...amazing

  • this was at merriweather post pavilion last year just awsome was there

  • That was awesome!!! It is obvious Vedder is an old school REM fan. It's too bad that Kurt Cobain wasn't around to join them. I'm sure he would have dug it!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Great opening riff......hooks you quick, and pulls you into it ...one of my fav's from R.E.M................and they have a some great catalog

  • Wow, this is awsome. Perfect - the two of them - this makes so much sense. Both sing with such passion and urgency. Thanks.

  • always been one of my favorite rem songs and throw in eddie vedder (the best vocalist of our generation) wow, i mean wow...love this kinda stuff, the guest vocals on badass tunes
