People groups into a team of 3-6 persons each, to attempt a climb of slippery poles for gifts and prizes on top of the pole. It’s really quite fun to watch.

They do this at Barrio Fiesta too, just not with bikes and palm trees. Its usually a greased pole with a piece of paper at the top; organizations donate money for the prize. The most I've seen was like $500 for the prize money. However, the winner (if any) gets only have and the other half is divided between the rest of the participants. Plus you need to be 13 years old or below to participate. If there's no winner, the money is distributed evenly to all participants.

They also have this in the Philippines. It's called Palo Sebo or "Greased Pole".

There are no bikes on top though... If you get the flag at the top, you win some money.
