Hi! Anthony played Boq in Melbourne, but he left in early January, when his contract expired. (He's been working on his third album since then - luckily!) They continued to use him for publicity of the show for quite a while afterwards.
This is a song written and sung by Anthony Callea. It's on his album "A new chapter' and he sang it as a tribute to Rob Guest, his co-star in the musical production of Wicked, who died suddenly.
It's Now You're Gone, co-written by Anthony with the UK's Steve Balsamo and Ben Robbins. It's beautiful, isn't it and he's sung it on several significant occasions. This is my favourite though.
This song and Anthonys performance just breaks my heart everytime I hear it. Also filling me with joy and happiness in a celebration of life. Rob is and will always be one of the best on stage performers of all time. I also lost my partner Lindy to cancer, he was 36. Im lost without him, but this song makes me smile, having at least shared 11 years with Lindy, my life is so much more to me. Love ya Lin, and miss you forever Rob.
Just do a search on Anthony Callea and 'Get here' or 'What you own" (from RENT) or 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas'. These clips are all on Youtube.
THis is an amazing video. I have been keeping track of Anthony for a long time. I foudn him on youtube and ever since have seen about every video that is posted. My dream is to one day come see him (I live in US).
I wonder why this young man's original performance of The Prayer wasn't publicised overseas. He created just as much a sensation here in Australia as Paul Potts and Susan Boyle. This is also very beautiful and extra moving because of the circumstances - thanks again for allowing everyone to see it through such a good clip. I come back to it all the time.
I just wanted to comment on how positive and supportive you are towards lots of young artists, as you show here with Anthony Callea.

Only discovered Anthony recently thanks to YouTube. This is just lovely. I recognise Rob from somewhere, maybe he did some Aussie programme in the UK ? Thanks for this song, shame it's not been heard much here as far as i know.
when i heard this song on his album i thought it would be perfect to be played at a funeral...kinda interesting to see that it was performed here..its very fitting. its beautiful

anthony has an excellent voice... jewelchic is right... he has a classical technique behind his sometimes poppy/melismatic voice. His prayer left not a dry eye in the house!
Anthony always emphasises that he was pop-trained. But he was taught things like really good breathing and phrasing, which cross the genres. Which songs do you think he sings in a melismatic style?
I would have to say most of his stuff, because meslismatic is a typical technique of pop singing. I dont see it happening in classical, so even the prayer, rain and so many others are sung just like that with his poppy voice, even though he can pull out the big guns. You can hear the transition on the word "Child" in the song the prayer, it shows how pop goes to classical belting. Just that one word... Just like every CHILD.
Hear it! its a good thing to be able to recognise, i think.
Melisma's a very common classical feature - Mozart, Handel etc use it extensively. Famous arias like Casta Diva are full of it. I wondered what you meant because I feel this song's a very typical Anthony ballad. I can't think where you heard him develop melisma on 'child' in The Prayer - just can't think of one performance where he did that. He usually sings it with more volume and vibrato, but it's one note for one syllable, not several notes per syllable as you get in melisma.
Anthony Callea has such a good voice. At wicked even though he only had a few short songs to sing as boq, they were so good!. this is nice song for Rob Guest.
i haven't really given much thought on my favourite boq yet. I think the guy who played him in London when i saw it there was REALLY good! Anthony Callea is really good too.

Thankyou Megan, such a moving tribute. I found it hard to listen without tears welling;Rob was a special man & mentor. Sharing the dressing room would have been good for Anthony;they seemed to have become great friends.Its funny mentioning their room being Calleafied,Anthony said in a lovely message he posted about Rob Our room was known as the clean & beautifully scented room with non stop talk about fast cars.He also has great admiration for, as he called her "Robs beautiful partner Kellie"
I learned of Anthony Callea at the end of '07. Being in America we are unfortunately limited to the access of music over seas. This limitation causes me to miss the time I spent abroad. But thank you for posting this. Huge fan of his but also sad to hear about Mr. Guest.
I have a very high respect for the two groups of people who are able to hold themselves together in extremely emotional situations. Actors and the people of our US military who are part of funerals for high-ranking officials. My cousin, who is now stationed in Japan with the Navy, did that before she graduated from the Naval Academy in Anapolis, Maryland. She had to resist bursting into tears sometimes with the family around she told me.
So nice of you to put this video up and the 'For Good' one too, they're both such touching tributes to Rob Guest. Although I understand Anthony wrote Now You're Gone a couple of years ago,the sentiment of the song is still very fitting. Thanks again.

That's funny!!! I would like to have seen it that many times that i can tell when they improvise. In my favourites there is one called Flower Blooper and it is Glinda and Elphaba, but not in Australia-VERY funny-i think you would like it. It's not one of mine-but i love it!!! xxxxxx
How do performers manage to sing such emotional songs at times like this? Knowing how close Anthony and Rob had become, it makes this performance even more astounding.

wow, this is such a great song, i actually went to see Wicked in Melbourne two days before he died so i was pretty upset to hear the news because he was just so great

Thankyou Megan, such a moving tribute. I found it hard to listen without tears welling;Rob was a special man & mentor. Sharing the dressing room would have been good for Anthony;they seemed to have become great friends.Its funny mentioning their room being Calleafied,Anthony said in a lovely message he posted about Rob Our room was known as the clean & beautifully scented room with non stop talk about fast cars.He also has great admiration for, as he called her "Robs beautiful partner Kellie"

I learned of Anthony Callea at the end of '07. Being in America we are unfortunately limited to the access of music over seas. This limitation causes me to miss the time I spent abroad. But thank you for posting this. Huge fan of his but also sad to hear about Mr. Guest.

I have a very high respect for the two groups of people who are able to hold themselves together in extremely emotional situations. Actors and the people of our US military who are part of funerals for high-ranking officials. My cousin, who is now stationed in Japan with the Navy, did that before she graduated from the Naval Academy in Anapolis, Maryland. She had to resist bursting into tears sometimes with the family around she told me.

So nice of you to put this video up and the 'For Good' one too, they're both such touching tributes to Rob Guest. Although I understand Anthony wrote Now You're Gone a couple of years ago,the sentiment of the song is still very fitting. Thanks again.

I unfortunately cant make it to Wicked Day....but i think if i told you how many times i have seen wicked, you'd think im NUTS! LOL

Ahahhaa ive seen it 15 times LOL! and yes each time i see it, i notice something slightly different...also you can notice the cast inprovising more and doing funny littles things that they didnt do at the start :)
Oh but i do recite along with it AHHAHA! SADLY my friend and i can act out scenes, dances and all ahahha! xoxox

That's funny!!! I would like to have seen it that many times that i can tell when they improvise. In my favourites there is one called Flower Blooper and it is Glinda and Elphaba, but not in Australia-VERY funny-i think you would like it. It's not one of mine-but i love it!!! xxxxxx

How do performers manage to sing such emotional songs at times like this? Knowing how close Anthony and Rob had become, it makes this performance even more astounding.
Thanks so much for putting this up. As much as I love Anthony having such a great opportunity to be part of Wicked, it has isolated him from much of Australia. I can't wait to see him back in the music mainstream.

It's all great experience-he has loads of years to do loads of things...a musical like Wicked would be so awesome to be a part of.
