At 0:36, I wonder why did the painter pointed out the "4" he painted to the woman where sometimes I'm sure he tries to keep his painted numbers secret and doesn't want anyone to see what he's done. (I know he was more shy in the number 11 painter skit).
This is the first ever Mad Painter I've seen. 0:29-0:32, when it was seen on the Elmo's World: Sesame Street, the montage at the beginning. Then I saw the full thing on "Sesame Street: Unpaved", 0:07-0:24 was cut.
I just learned that Paul Benedict had passed away on December 1st at the age of 70. Yet another familiar face from the early days of Sesame Street has left us.
RIP Mad Painter, keep painting those numbers in the Great Beyond. :(
Who, indeed... Why don't you come over to my apartment, and we'll discuss it? When you get here, just ring my bell, then stand about five feet away from the building and wait.
See how fast you end up getting arrested do this...to someone's umbrella...kind of funny that kids would grow up learning its OK to painting numbers on what ever they desire. Aside: Stockard looks more like a 10 ...on cuteness scale...
This made an impression on me as a little kid. I loved his reassuring voice and the fact that all he cared about was painting numbers in odd places. Quality. Love Stockard Channing too, good mix of strang/cute looking.
No, there is no Mad Painter #12 skit. I think the reason why there is no Mad Painter #12 skit is because, the Mad Painter #11 skit took place in a doctor's office and there was a nurse calling the patients into the office one by one. Then when the painter was the last one in the waiting room, the nurse pulled him into the office thinking he was a patient waiting. The doctor probably did a full body check up on him, and put him away in a hospital for crazy people, just for painting numbers.
That's true. Or another reason why they might've not done it is because, these Mad Painter skits were probably encouraging young kids to put graffiti around spots in public places they're not supposed to which the kids parents were complaining to PBS about, so they probably decided to stop doing the Mad Painter skits, even though the numbers of the day on Sesame Street are from 1-20.
There was a headline in mad painter #8 that said "Painter Strikes Again". It does make the sequence strange as AFAIK it is the only one that goes past 10 but never makes it to 12 (Sesame Street went to 10, 12 or 20 with it numbers)
Yes, I saw that headline. The highest number that Sesame Street goes with it's numbers is 20. However, there was one episode where 21 was the number of the day. It might've been a Monsterpiece Theater skit about a girls Stepmother and Stepfather were going to a party in a costume with a number on it and they told her that there are no more numbers for her so she couldn't attend. So Count Von Count as a fairy came and told the girl that there are plenty of numbers, so he made her be 21.
Yes that's true. I thought that it was strange how they used 21 as the number of the day. In that skit where Count Von Count was the fairy, when he told the girl that there are plenty of numbers for her to dress as, I thought he meant that there are plenty of numbers between 1-20 that nobody has dressed as (he was telling her how numbers go on infinite which is why he made her 21 over 20).
However, in skits when they're counting in Spanish, they only count up to 10, and English up to 20.
Also, I remember in one muppet and kid skit (they don't do muppet/monster and kid skits anymore on Sesame Street) with Count Von Count, Count Von Count asked a kid how to count up to 20 in Spanish which he didn't know how, and they both did it together. (I guess that was the only skit on Sesame Street where there was counting up to 20 in Spanish).
Are you sure that's Ms. Channing? The number 3 painter skit lady looked much more like her. Good skit... I wonder if they originally meant for the water to wash the 4 away?

The piano music has a recurring theme, sounds like "I Think I'm Going Out of My Head" from the 60s

That is a rare one as generally Sesame Street didn't go over 20 (it was rare even when I was growing up for them to go over 12.)

@afriendofbean I think you're right, 20 seemed to be the upper limit in early Sesame Street episodes, IIRC.
