I remember the introduction and quick demise of New Coke. When they brought back the original formula and called it Coke Classic, New Coke remained on the market for awhile. Then New Coke disappeared altogether. Yet they still call the original drink Coca Cola Classic. No need for that designation anymore.

Sierra Mist was created off the 7up design, which is a cola.

Gotta agree, though, that the "new Coke" was the WORST mistake Coke ever made. The whole world went into instant rebellion over it, and it cost them a fortune, both in sales and publicity. Even the introduction of "Classic" never quite got them back to where they were before.

Just a note: 7-up was marketed as the "un-cola," so it was an alternative to those who, for whatever reason, didn't like the dark stuff. Your historical account is very interesting, but I'm wondering how much of an impact their respective marketing efforts had on the overall success of each company. The question I have is, "Is it about marketing, or is it about taste?" I'd like to point out that Pepsi might be ahead now, but the race is far from over - especially if marketing is a factor.
