I'm retired military, the chaplains didn't have an issue with me as an atheist. The poor 2nd LT that pressed my dog tags dropped his mouth open when I said, "atheist." I did experience hostilities and discrimination from other enlisted members.

Yeah, when I went into the service (mid-80's) I didn't realize I might have spoken up about swearing to God when I did my oath to enlist. Here I was, an American, wanting to support and defend the Constitution, which PROTECTED my right to be an Atheist, and so I wanted to join the military...but in order to join I had to swear to someone else's God. Made no sense to me.

The thing is (and I'm an atheist) he is the first I know to actually heed the words of his savior: don't swear. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Th earth is the throne, the moon the footstool etc. but yes, this is the way it SHOULD be.
