Specter only cares about what is good for preserving and extending his own political clout. As soon as he realized he would lose his next primary election, he switched parties. (And of course it didn't hurt that the Dems had just secured a big majority in the Senate which they'll be holding onto at least through 2012.)

Mr. Toomey, a piece of advice: plenty of people are angry at Specter for his flip flopping but I have to warn you that I don't think you have a particularly winning argument here either. The positions Specter has flip flopped on play well to the Pennsylvanian electorate - public option in health care, employee free choice act. Are you really going to run against these issues and expect to win? Seriously???

@Dams19 Specter voted with Democrats 90% of the time since he switched parties. Between January–March 2009 Specter voted with the Democrats 58% of the time. Following the support of the stimulus package and the entrance of Pat Toomey in the Republican primary, Specter began to vote 16% with Democrats. When switching to become a Democrat, he voted 69% with his new party initially, until Joe Sestak entered the Democratic primary and Specter started to vote 97% of the time.
